These people have no respect for their users. Without us, the social sites would not exist, yet they're treating us disgracefully. They didn't tell them the problem was found or fixed.
mrquackerJun 30, 2010
Then stop using the services of companies that act like this.
Betcha wont though.
notrab89Jul 1, 2010
I totally agree with what you say.
firefox15Jul 1, 2010
MrQuacker hit the nail on the head. Over and over I hear this rederick of "We make your website! You better respect us! We could leave!" Funny thing is, these people almost /never/ follow though. They are a slave to the website whether they want to admit it or not.

I heard recently that Foursquare was the next big thing ... but I really don't want to broadcast my whereabouts like that, even if some of those GPS games look fun.
michaelpintoJun 30, 2010
i've always found the very concept of foursquare to be an invitation to stalkers - maybe gen y doesn't care about that yet?
honoredmuleJul 1, 2010
(keyword "yet") :P

I wouldn't mind getting a stalker.
booch757Jul 1, 2010
Not only stalkers, but burglars as well. "Hey everyone, I'm an hour away from home right now. Please take my stuff."
poshsuicideJun 30, 2010
The fact that Foursquare knew a hacker could access mass amount of check-in data, and pull from that individual user check-ins is frightening. That's a huge violation of privacy that should have been addressed and users should have been notified. This is massively shady. As users, we're told our privacy is being respected, and only friends can see where we've been. Friends, and stalkers, right.
invaderJun 30, 2010
I've always been wary of Foursquare and its privacy. I had an account for at least a year before linking it to my Twitter account.
While it's not fashionable, I prefer Brightkite. It's more clear what can be seen by whom and gives more controls over who sees what and what pushes to where. Somehow they got pushed to the curb when Foursquare and Gowalla took off.

Damnit, I hate coming across articles that I know are going to do well on the front page with like only 5 comments in, then panic while trying to come up with something clever. f**king always happens.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jayzer123Jun 30, 2010
bury this f**khead
magzineJul 1, 2010
Burried for blatant, overudeness.
That's not how we play here.
creationismlolJun 30, 2010
Well you failed again.

THATS WHAT THE FACEPALM ASCII IS FOR! Lrn2Internet.
/s
But in all seriousness, half the time i think that's how it's used.
maynardjkJul 1, 2010
I'm pretty sure any idiot could come up with something more clever than copy and pasting the same comment in several articles.
crackinthebox10Jun 30, 2010
Well i suppose they are fortunate that they got a white hat and not a black hat. Yet.
antihero58Jun 30, 2010
Yeah well not much chance of that anymore after this article huh?
gusterbearJul 1, 2010
They'll clearly get a polka dot hat after them.
pittpanthersfanJun 30, 2010
I used to hate Foursquare because it's a narcissistic and pointless service. Now I have another reason.
Oh, and it f**king CLOGS my Twitter stream.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
sushubhJul 1, 2010
you can use destroytwitter which has a filter function to hide tweets from specific sources.

If you are constantly providing people with your exact location how concerned about privacy can you really be
opiticaJun 30, 2010
How can you expect foursquare to care about your privacy when you willingly throw it away?
usefulidiot127Jun 30, 2010
I agree with the sentiment of the article, but at this point everyone needs to deal with reality. You need to assume that any social networking activity is basically public domain. Companies may put band aids on this fact with fallible privacy controls, but at the end of the day don't publicize anything you wouldn't want the world to know.
Once you come to terms with this fact and realize that a company who's top priority is money is in charge of your privacy, you'll sleep more easily. I use Foursquare and Facebook, and take full advantage of their privacy controls, but I don't rely on them.
usefulidiot127Jun 30, 2010
Buried for using who's instead of whose.
crimsonblurJun 30, 2010
One more reason to use Gowalla instead.
kibblesnbittsJun 30, 2010
I miss living in a time where Foursquare was just a game kids played in elementary school and summer camps. Oh the time flying by......
diggamyteJun 30, 2010
Privacy? Their entire business model is TELLING PEOPLE WHERE YOU ARE.
darkphenoxJul 1, 2010
Its not even the business model its the purpose of the site.
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
I have no idea what foursquare is and I'm just fine with that.
robdazombaJun 30, 2010
Google does it. People continue to use Google.
Facebook does it. People continue to use Facebook.
Get used to this everyone. It's the new attitude toward privacy and we've already set plenty of precedents. If you don't like it, FFS, stop using these things.
farfromsubtlJun 30, 2010
Are these the guys that were talking about installing 'leather floors' in their office on Diggnation?
fadakarJun 30, 2010
We use an app where we have to manually open and check in after searching for the destination and people are upset because our locations are being given away? Honestly I couldn't give a s**t if I tried, maybe if I was in espionage and I felt so compelled to check in on the job, but nah, just having fun.
jceezJun 30, 2010
I mean... Foursquare is all about updating everyone about where you eat, where you s**t etc. I would think privacy wasn't too big of an issue here.
doublebaconsodaJul 1, 2010
Privacy on the internet. LOL!!!!
merrikJul 1, 2010
This article is too bitchy for me. Apparently Foursquare took this guy's mom out to a nice dinner and then never called her again. You can taste the disdain and hate, as well as the retarded insult of not having their communications immediately replied to.
Not that there shouldn't be some disdain and some hate, but that's pretty much all I got out of the article aside from Foursquare getting a bunch of money and having bugs they're fixing like everyone else.
moneyguru20Nov 29, 2010
Privacy is so important and I don't think there is anything that should be traded for that, money included.
