wish the us did this
tsothaJul 3, 2010
Who is going to pay for it?
ontainJul 3, 2010
you have a right to property but you still have to pay for it don't you?
you have the right to bare arms but you still have to pay for the gun.
in the US there's a lot of areas with crap service options.
hipmanJul 3, 2010
"in the US there's a lot of areas with crap service options."
Gee, I wonder why that could possibly be?.Ever looked at a map?.
tsothaJul 3, 2010
I'm assuming the Fins are trying to set broadband up like other utilities, or mail service. But those things are expensive partly because people who are easy to serve subsidize people who aren't. If I live in a cabin 100 miles from anything and demand my broadband, are they going to charge me the million dollars it would cost to provide service, or are they going to charge the other million customers an extra buck?
I'm guessing the latter.
aquileriaJul 3, 2010
The US is many times bigger and has many times more people than Finland!!
cjw10Jul 3, 2010
@ontain, The things you mentioned don't require and infrastructure to be setup though. Me having a right to buy a gun doesn't require something to be build (such as cable lines & servers). Broadband requires an existing infrastructure in place to provide the service, and that costs money. Creating a law that would require broadband access to all citizens would drive up costs for everyone (as tsotha said).
I like how everyone using reason here is being dugg down by the people who sit in the chair and say "Yeah, broadband for everyone sounds good, lets do that..." without thinking about it at all.
affectJul 3, 2010
The s**t here is way overpriced. 10$ a month, like a phone line is more reasonable. Higher speeds are the premium and you pay much more. Make it available for everyone.
ontainJul 3, 2010
stupid americans believe rights are only what is stated in the Constitution. While the smart ones know that rights are whatever we the people decide is a right under law. Sadly our government is now controlled by the corporations and the stupid are outnumbering the smart.
baphclassJul 3, 2010
You misspelled the term "bear arms." You're in no position to be calling anyone stupid.
drsolaceJul 3, 2010
He also didn't capitalise the first word in his post therefore his whole point is null and void.
affectJul 3, 2010
bare arms?
fr0stbyte124Jul 3, 2010
Yes. We have the right to be sleeveless.
eikaiJul 3, 2010
Indeed, I think the consitution is pretty stupid.
Like back when the Westboro Baptist church protested at a soldier's funeral, they had a right to 'free speech'.. That's pretty crazy. Free speech should be more dynamically given depending on the situation.
airportbaldyJul 3, 2010
Don't worry, the US will probably make this a right for large corporations soon.

Why not make corvettes, ribeye steaks, gold watches, and every other luxury under the sun a "legal right" too, right??
Hey, because money grows on trees, and people should not be expected to earn luxury items themselves, but should be given them "just because"!

Yeah. We shouldn't have to work for the internet. It's a God-given right.
localzukJul 2, 2010
Way to understand... They have to pay... The providers just now can't say no to providing them with access if they request it.
virinixJul 3, 2010
The providers will just find other ways of saying no. This law is full of loopholes.
localzukJul 3, 2010
virinix - most countries have ways to solve issues like that. Things like being able to go back to the discussions in government about the law, to use the 'spirit' of the law.
So, if a company acts like a douche in that way, they would end up in court, with the prosecution referring back to the original govt. discussions about why the law was created. So, the court can see that whilst the company might not be in breach of the written law, they would be in breach of the intentions of the law.
Not to mention, for once, the market would soon kill off douche companies like that - all it'd take is for one company to come along and say 'sure, we'll follow the spirit of the law' and voila, people will jump ship.

thescorpion420Jul 2, 2010
They aren't saying its a right to have it, just to have it available.
thegreatsamJul 3, 2010
Which is how it should be. It shouldn't be forced on those that don't want it (for whatever reason, think Amish), but it should absolutely be available to whoever wants it.
zerobriersJul 2, 2010
When you think about it, it's not dumb for an American city to offer free broadband. In a free market, this is a way to spend money to attract tourists (stay here, the internet is on us) and jobs. As the internet becomes critical to the workplace, free broadband would make a city ultra competitive. In the ultra competitive EU, this will make Denmark more competitive. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mdellingJul 2, 2010
Except they aren't offering it for free.
zerobriersJul 4, 2010
I guess I needed to explain that my comment was inspired by, but different from the article. I underestimated the small leap people could make. my bad.
stubearJul 3, 2010
Except it's not free. The money comes from, in this case, tax payers. So you'd be forcing people to pay for internet access whether or not they wanted it. This is a very slippery slope and with people like you out there the bottom is still a long ways away.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
zerobriersJul 4, 2010
I'm simply suggesting that in a competitive marketplace, attracting people costs money. Cities spend money on tourism (and that money isn't "free", tax payers in the cities pay for that whether they want tourists or not).
As for people like me...I don't get that. Roads aren't free. Non drivers are forced to pay for roads. So I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm talking about spending money to attract people. Yes, it taxes, but I think it's fear mongering to suggest this is a slippery slope.

This is stupid. Idiots like Obama want to run lines all over the country which is inefficient in more ways than one. If the market was more free you'd see wireless technologies soon catch up to wired technologies. With technology like 4G, we are nearly there. Instead of spending all that money running costly and soon-to-be obsoleted wire, you can just put the money into research for wireless.
But who am I to know? Government knows best! /liberalismComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
* Evelyn Beatrice Hall, Ch. 7 : Helvetius : The Contradiction, p. 199
Strange it is that men should admit the validity of the arguments for free speech but object to their being "pushed to an extreme", not seeing that unless the reasons are good for an extreme case, they are not good for any case.
