Why does Google always come up uninspired names for its products?
redzinAug 8, 2010
"Google" itself is unique, and possibly the best brand in the world. It makes sense to keep using it in their new products.
That said, "Google Me" does sound pretty lame.
gotbannedagainAug 8, 2010
Actually, wouldn't it make sense? Google has become synonymous with phrases like, "Google It" - "Google Them" - "Google Him/Her".
Seems to me that it'd make sense to turn the attention of Google onto yourself.
bobadobalinaAug 8, 2010
In marketing, simpler = more gooder. Apple products are all iWhatever. McDonalds just puts Mc in front of their products. It's all about making that Pavlovian association
geddonAug 8, 2010
Would you prefer Googlr?
rwerelicAug 8, 2010
That the first thing I thought.
earthwormzimAug 8, 2010
Yeah, "Facebook" is far more original.

What about Lougle?

I think Google Wave is an excellent name, lets just get the product now
rpgmakrAug 9, 2010
Actually, I think Google Me is great given the context.
dralezeroAug 9, 2010
Whenever we ask someone to look up something we say "Google it" as in Google is an action. So now we can say "Hey how do I contact you?" "Just google me". It means two things and is an action phrase of its own.
sciguyajAug 7, 2010
Reminds me of the old days when Yahoo starred trying to compete with all the popular companies at the time, like E-bay and Amazon. Copying other people seemed to have worked great for them right? I mean they've got millions of users today! So yeah, 98% of those "users" turn out to the be spam bots, but they still count as users!
buttu4uAug 7, 2010
lets hope it don't end up like Google Wave.
who thought Facebook will be a big thing some years ago. Maybe google ME is the next big thing. Have to wait for more details.
craftyguyAug 8, 2010
And let's not forget about the astonishing success of Google Buzz!!

super6Aug 8, 2010
Wave's main problem was that it didn't integrate with Google's other services. Everyone who go wave should have been redirected to wave from gmail when they try to go to gmail.com and it should import all their email.
roiperezAug 7, 2010
It was only a matter of time.....
kingkurtusAug 8, 2010
It will be interesting to see the two of them duke it out. Google against Facebook, who will win? How will this change social networking?
jqp123Aug 8, 2010
"How will this change social networking?"
Facebook *requires* your real name whereas Google will allow any name you want.
Google doesn't care what you call yourself, they know who you are from your IP address. They have access to your email, your documents, your voice messages and they've been tracking you all over the internet for years.
You can call yourself "kingkurtus" if you like but Google knows full well that you're really Kurt Evans 5704 11th Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107 (206) 783-4874Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

In the end is this about Google and Facebook or about how the online world is more and more cannibalizing the time people spend with traditional media.
executexAug 8, 2010
Oh man, I really hope Google screws Facingbook in the ass.
kamikazowAug 8, 2010
You mean like Google already succeeded with its giant hit Orkut....??
dig1xAug 8, 2010
No thanks.
Facebook is excellent at what it does, there's no doubt about it. FB has reached a 'critical mass' where all the cool-kids like to argue it's unhip or that it 'suxors', but there's no doubt it's great in it's space.
Take Google's many "also rans" as a contrast; gmail and google office are merely "Meh" products, and they're the best non-search products Google has.
I'm not interested in Google's continued half-arsed moves into non-browsing space.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Orkut had it's setbacks. However, if they redesigned it and made it better, eventually it has the potential to overtake facebook.

Zuckerber versus Schmidt. Caucasian, please.
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
Schmidt looks like a grumpy terrorist. Zuckerberg looks like a kid who you just wanna punch in the face.
adhdocdAug 8, 2010
Agreed. Schmidt lost to Gates in the NetWare v NT OS battle round 1, He will not lose the war. Having a "florescent" lock down on your office door speaks volumes, and who was offered the Technology Czar position by Obama?

Key to successful social network site...best fake farm/gardening game.
dralezeroAug 9, 2010
Which is way Google has pumped money into the makers of Farmville.
shicken066Aug 8, 2010
I hate articles like these. "We've heard from a source close to *insert relevant noun*" and, "a spokesperson".
This is not factual news. It's something that some idiot typed up. Until the sources or spokespersons say it's true or false, then it's garbage.
This goes for everything, not just this particular story.
osabr22000Aug 8, 2010
When you have no competition, you can run your company like a bag of the complete douche variety. When you have competition, all of sudden you have to fix things, such as your s**tty photo uploader (don't know if it's still crap I quit FB about 4 months ago).
halflife22Aug 8, 2010
Because Google is a company of engineers. The put function over form. 'Me' was probably just a quick name slapped on in the beginning to give the project a title, but then it stuck as it became ready for release.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It was inevitable that the two largest personal privacy violators on the planet would eventually butt heads.
Access to the personal lives of 500 million people is a prize too big for Google to ignore.
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
Could you explain how Google somehow violates privacy?
If you choose to use their services, that is.
kamikazowAug 8, 2010
Considering that there are many ways people's data gets stored and processed on Google's servers (eg. via an e-mail sent to one address which is a redirect to GMail) and the sender never agreed to let his/her mail being processed through Google's context sensitive ad generating system, it's a form of privacy violation.
Though in all fairness, Facebook is not better: they ask their users to upload complete address books without asking the contacts stored there and keep names, e-mails, possibly even phone numbers infinitely.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jqp123Aug 8, 2010
"Could you explain how Google somehow violates privacy?"
You don't really believe that Google provides "services" just to be nice do you?
I don't use their services. But unless I use cookie and ad blocking software, my IP address still gets sent to a Google server every time I visit a page with Google ads ---- which is a majority of web sites.
So Google can easily track and profile my web usage habits based on my IP address. The only problem (for Google) is that my IP address frequently changes ---- I move from computer to computer (at home, at work, on the road, smartphone, etc.) or sometimes my ISP resets my connection.
"Services" are Google's solution to the changing IP problem. Every time you login to their "services", you're keeping Google informed of your whereabouts, which device and browser you're using and your current IP which only allows them to track and profile you more accurately.
Somewhere in their terms of service, a user of Google's services agrees to this. However, most users don't full understand or appreciate all the implications of combining this with the world's largest non-government operated personal data collection system.

Trust Big Brother... errr, Google. :P
stillhateyouAug 8, 2010
"You don't really believe that Google provides "services" just to be nice do you?"
No, I believe that Google provides services to improve their search and advertising capabilities. I sincerely doubt they really give a s**t what I'm doing online aside from that. I'm just not that important... neither are you.
jqp123Aug 8, 2010
"I sincerely doubt they really give a s**t what I'm doing online aside from that."
They care only because others are willing to pay for access to your personal profile. Google basically owns the data they collect about you and they can sell access to whoever they want. Right now, these purchasers are mostly advertisers. In the future, who knows.
"I'm just not that important... neither are you."
Privacy is not a measure of how "important" you are. You obviously feel important enough to expect some privacy; otherwise, you would use your real name here.

I'm calling bulls**t on that claim. Try and back it up.
jqp123Aug 9, 2010
"Try and back it up."
The back up is the absence of legal or contractual restriction on the data they collect.
stillhateyouAug 9, 2010
They have a privacy policy in place preventing that. If they did sell my data to a 3rd party without my consent, I could sue them for large sums of money.
jqp123Aug 9, 2010
"They have a privacy policy in place preventing that."
LOL! Yes, a privacy policy that they can change any time they want.
javacodeguyAug 9, 2010
Why does anyone really care though? You shouldn't be putting anything online you don't want the whole world to see. Even if the company encrypts in and requires anyone who views it to use an RSA key to unlock it, you have to assume that everyone in the world has access.
Do you really care if some company knows you like The Jersey Shore and Double Stuf Oreos? Oh no people might find out who I'm friends with! Really there are more important issues. Facebook works great and more importantly, huge numbers of people use it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

godsdeadAug 8, 2010
I would feel safer with facebook having control over my data more than google, online media has blown facebook privacy out of proportion.
5celeryAug 9, 2010
totally out of proportion, as there *is* no facebook privacy
dig1xAug 8, 2010
No thanks. Facebook for all it's ills, is great at what it does. It's moving in the right direction IMO (exposing the social network as a service layer to other apps/purposes).
I'm no fan of Google, and Google's recent back-room dealing with Verizon to contract themselves into a preferred traffic-status -- making Google the first big-player willing to undue our current net-neutrality -- makes me incredibly bitter towards Google.
I have no interest in seeing google spread and spew in every direction.
cheesyballzAug 8, 2010
I hope Google kicks facebook's ass.
kaynesanAug 8, 2010
So that's why the Facebook App for Android sucks this bad.
ramtanionAug 8, 2010
They won't be able to convince people to jump Zuckerburg's ship by copying. It's gonna have to be WILDLY innovative.
wheelingdude86Aug 8, 2010
Where the sluts go, the rest will follow. Remember Google... Sluts.
burylinkAug 8, 2010
Then you might as well f**king forget Google Me, until Google becomes hip, it aint gonna happen

SLUTS
burylinkAug 11, 2010
sluts wont join if it isnt hip, try getting sluts to use slashdot
ramtanionAug 8, 2010
And one more thing - I wish that stock photo of Zuckerburg smiling near the facebook sign would die in a fire. That is all.
danbarkerAug 8, 2010
I don’t want any of them to be successful. Facebook is strange and Google is too powerful.
doggystylesAug 8, 2010
No matter what Google does they will never be better than Facebook. Google is into minimalism. You can't do that is in a socail networking environment. You need lots of features to keep people interested and give them more ways to use it.
bipolarruledoutAug 9, 2010
Facebook can and will go away.... not completely but they will eventually lose critical relevance. The path is paved with social networks and popular internet technologies that have come and gone.
endgameAug 8, 2010
It will have the most boring & uninteresting UI EVER...lol!
jwalkinAug 8, 2010
Noooooooooo! We’re in loooooockdooooooown!
cantholditdownAug 8, 2010
Facebook could use some privacy improvements. I am also tired of the crappy photo sharing. I understand that they don't want everyone to browse pictures in full quality, but they should be available for DL if you want to have a copy for your self.
vgssAug 8, 2010
I'm pretty sure they're compressed wholesale, then stored. Why waste the space keeping full-res images no one has access to?
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
Facebook is scared because they've been turning the screws into their users for so long, and thinking they could get away with it because of their lack of competition. Right now they are thinking, oh s**t, maybe we SHOULDN'T have been such dickholes, how loyal are are users going to be?
dig1xAug 9, 2010
"turning the screws into their users for so long,"
Huh? Explain that. It doenst make any sense at all. What are you talking about?
ethana2Aug 8, 2010
Facebook with file transfers, 8MP image uploads, video chat, and a gmail message inbox? I'd switch.
Beep111Aug 8, 2010
Facebook might be in trouble here. Google will definitely treat people better than Facebook does. Google actually believes in privacy and delivering a solid product with minimal hassle. Facebook has proven itself to be untrustworthy. Not that it matters tho. Zuckerberg is so filthy rich from selling all our information.
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
Google is the second worst privacy offender after facebook. they just don't rub your face in it.
Beep111Aug 8, 2010
unintentionally. Facebook flagrantly violates privacy. Google only does it due to the fact that they run the largest search engine ever. They don't sell your s**t like Zuckerberg does.
dig1xAug 9, 2010
"Google actually believes in privacy"
f**king bulls**t. Do you forget their Buzz fiasco?
In an effort to compete with Twitter (and Digg and others), they _TOTALLY_ raped their existing userbase and exposed piles and piles of user's private information.
You're simply cheeringleading. Give it a rest.
diggadiggaAug 8, 2010
I bet first google will start out with high privacy to attract people and once it has enough it will take away privacy, just like facebook.
sgc1020Aug 8, 2010
I bet first google will say it is as good as facebook to attract people and once it has enough it would cause the world to implode. Just a theory.
dig1xAug 9, 2010
FB has excellent privacy controls. Their's no problem there.
pureeviljesterAug 8, 2010
great. facebook except with more ads
at least facebook tries to hide it as part of the page by putting like and dislike buttons on them.
i didn't know how many ads could be crammed into a youtube video until google took over.
mungabbaAug 9, 2010
Ad Block Plus. I haven't seen an advert in months.
grantmoore3dAug 9, 2010
Finally, a chance to start over and NOT add my parents... seriously, stop posting on my damn wall!!
bajanboostAug 9, 2010
I support Google all the way. In any case, competition drives innovation and this will only benefit us all. :)
mawrizAug 9, 2010
Now maybe Facebook will finally improve the crappy resolution of their photos...

2 years from now everyone defending facebook today is gonna be making fun of it and trying to hide the fact they even had an account there, just like they do with myspace now.
