I've used Four Square in a most limited manner in the past, haven't decided if I'll use Places or not. I try to avoid Facebook, if I can.
thoughtsonthisAug 20, 2010
I don't know if I really need something like Places.
mweatherAug 20, 2010
I don't need a car, but I can see why it would be useful for some people.
jkalAug 20, 2010
I don't use facebook if I can avoid it, however i'm savvy enough to know I'll need to look out for security settings anytime they make a change or add a feature, as I'm sure most Digg users are.
However the main concern is all the non-technical sheeple who are the majority of active facbook users, they will be obliviously transmitting their information.

Caveat emptor.

The people who have a need to let everyone know where they are and what they are doing. You know, the narcissist.

Facebook sucks.

norman619Aug 20, 2010
Why?
bosskeyAug 20, 2010
According to SAI sources, the following exchange is between a 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and a friend shortly after Mark launched The Facebook in his dorm room.
Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuck: Just ask.
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don’t know why.
Zuck: They “trust me”
Zuck: Dumb f**ks.

That's not enough advice. Facebook lets you search profiles by email. If like a lot of people, you use the same email for Facebook and a lot of other things, nobody needs your real name to find you.

"Places" doesn't even work. I'm not sure why they advertise this feature just yet.
I can't just pick a random place and say I'm there, and I *need* a mobile device to do it? Yeah. Horrible design.
mweatherAug 20, 2010
Yeah, and foursquare doesn't work either. I've been trying to become the mayor of places I've never been and it won't let me!
generalobviousAug 20, 2010
Not sure why you added /s
I should be able to pick any spot I want and claim to be there as well as do it without requiring a mobile device.
It really is bad design.
mweatherAug 20, 2010
So you see absolutely no problem with letting me be Mayor of a location I've never been to? Being a mayor is pointless enough as it is.
Not to mention the ability to cheat in the inevitable Facebook geolocation games that use the Places feature.
There is not reason to break so much functionality so that Luddites without GPS enabled phones can check in. It's bad enough they let your friends check you in.
generalobviousAug 20, 2010
"So you see absolutely no problem with letting me be Mayor of a location I've never been to? Being a mayor is pointless enough as it is without enabling people to cheat."
What the f**k are you talking about? I wasn't aware that "places" lets you become a "Mayor" of anything.
Regardless, who gives a f**k about GPS games and "reviews"? I should still be able to pull up a place and say I'm there.
Still bad design.
mweatherAug 20, 2010
"What the f**k are you going on about? I wasn't aware that "places" lets you become a "Mayor" of anything."
I wasn't referring to Places. I was referring to Foursquare (which is now linked with Facebook Places), which is what the post you responded to was specifically taking about. Try and keep up.
"Regardless, who gives a f**k about GPS games and "reviews"?"
Facebook users and businesses respectively. Two groups Facebook tries to keep happy, especially the latter as they give Facebook money.
"Why can't I use my PC to claim I'm at a place?"
Because fixing that one annoyance would create countless others. Facebook isn't going to break the feature to appease a minority of users.

I don't know why all the hate. The other day I was at the coffee shop and I was dying to tell all 300 of my facebook friends I was at the coffee shop. It seemed very relevant to everyone and important for me to inform them I was having coffee. The best part about this is that my already boring-as-s**t news feed is now going to have exciting things popping up every other minute like, "Sam just checked into Publix." Which is great because now I will know when Sam is shopping for groceries.
dinglebuttAug 20, 2010

The main problem with Facebook Places is that, by default, your friends can check you in to places without you authorizing them to. This is a problem if you don't feel like broadcasting to all your friends where you are and who you're with.
Gizmodo has a good post on disabling this:
http://gizmodo.com/5616338/the-first-thing-you-should-do-with-facebook-places-dont-let-other-people-tag-you
If you're concerned about privacy, do that and you should be all set.
diggamyteAug 20, 2010
Thanks - good post indeed...just disabled.
A hilarious example from that Gizmodo post of how it could go wrong:
You are having an affair with your wife's sister. Your wife's sister checks into her home and says "Having awesome sex with [Your name here]". Your wife sees this on her sister's wall and divorces you.
dralezeroAug 20, 2010
I had to go here as well.
"Applications and websites," edit "Info accessible to your friends" so that "Current location" and "Places I've visited" are not checked
robohitAug 21, 2010
Man, good catch. Amazing how many hoops you have to jump through...
lukas1051Aug 20, 2010
I'm still not sure exactly how Places work. It hasn't been introduced in the UK yet, it sounds kinda cool but I'm not completely sure how I feel about it. Are you constantly being tracked and friends can see exactly where you are or do you just check into certain locations?
mweatherAug 20, 2010
Just if you check in. The only real problem with the default settings is that friends can check you in, though they may have changed that. When I went to the privacy settings, the option to allow friends to check me in wasn't on or off, but waiting for my choice. Whether they could check me in prior to me choosing not to let them, I don't know.
lukas1051Aug 20, 2010
OK, in that case it's fine. I'll make sure I do that as soon as it becomes available then.
mweatherAug 20, 2010
It's available.

This is ridiculous. Facebook doesn't care if you join Places, they already know where you are as soon as you visit their site (just like every other website you visit). You're just making the decision here of whether or not you want your friends to have that same information.
JustCauseBlogAug 20, 2010
I'm glad to see that Facebook collaborated with the EFF prior to launch to tweak the available privacy settings. These proactive measures are certainly preferable to Google's launch-first-tweak-later approach (e.g., Buzz). It's also reassuring to see that Facebook is requiring a warrant prior to disclosure of location data to law enforcement. If we're taking a step in this direction--regardless of whether you think it is the right one--it's important that we take it in the right way. I hope further collaboration with groups like the EFF becomes the norm for this industry. We'll all be better off in the end if it does.
