Ha, nice. Been to the lake; it's a lovely place in Webster, MA. Me dad taught my sis and I to say it when we were kids. It means something like "I fish on this side, you fish on that side, and nobody fishes in the middle" in the local Native American language.
sodamachineAug 9, 2010
from what I remember about that mean from living there is that a local newspaper reporter made up the meaning to the lake name.
dj88masterchiefAug 9, 2010
I've seen that sign going to Thompson Speedway for years! I've always wondered how to say that.

I live one state south, but my dad is from near that area also and he taught me how to pronounce it but always said the meaning of it was unknown/made up lol.
tiakAug 9, 2010
People do still have knowledge of the language in question, and the direct translation is something like, "fishing place at the boundary", so that interpretation seems reasonable.
rotundoAug 9, 2010
Well gosh darnit, Dad misled us! According to Wikipedia (which in this case I'll trust over my Dad):
[The Algonquian name] has been translated as 'boundary fishing place', but something close to "fishing place at the boundary" or "that which is a divided island lake" may be more accurate.
Man, it was so hard to check facts back in the day... before the series of tubes. I wonder how many more apocryphal bits of information that I learned back in the dark ages are still laying in the cobwebby corners of my brain, waiting to be unearthed by digg conversations and random stumblings on Wikipedia.
qiqiruAug 9, 2010
"I fish on this side, you fish on that side, and nobody fishes in the middle" doesn't sound too far from "that which is a divided island lake". It's the boundary between to peoples' lands, they come to an agreement that they can each fish from the own side "divided island lake" the island being the "nobody fishes in the middle" bit. Sounds like you dad might have been on to something after all ^^
cornerback42Aug 9, 2010
He was close enough. It's like a long game of telephone, somewhere it got jumbled but it still had its meaning. Another 4 or 5 generations and no internet, could have jumbled it to far to distinguish its original meaning. Thankfully this forum exists and now you can pass the correct meaning off to your kids.

jstrahnAug 9, 2010
That's just what they've led you to believe. It really means "We fish on this side, you fish on that side because we poisoned all the fish on that side and you're going to eat them and die for stealing our land, whitey!"
askantikAug 9, 2010
"local Native American language"

longbow486Aug 10, 2010
almost every day, it still boggles my mind.
hivoltage815Aug 9, 2010
The natives actually shared this phrase with the Americans as they spread west, but they ended up fishing on both sides, and in the middle, and then let the natives open a casino in the part of the lake nobody wants to live.

You could put quotation marks around what your searching for and then it only searches for those words exactly.

We did a presentation on phobias in some lower grade and I figured I would look for something that couldn't possibly exist. So I put in fear of long words and that popped up.
Were it not for being too late, I would have come in to make a sweet thread joke about it:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Then someone would reply:
What the f**k are you on?
To which I would reply:
I suffer from hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

I found it very easy to pronounce compared to Eyjafjallajökull.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyjafjallajökull
From what I could make out of the audio clip in the wiki link, maybe it's because the double L is pronounced like a T and an L (eyya-fyaatla-yokutl). I don't speak Icelandic so maybe any of you native speakers of the language might help me out here.
