New digg still has bugs, why would they release it...
badqatJul 30, 2010
Well, I'm not quite ready to accept the claim that the switch is happening this weekend. Until we get word from @digg or Kevin Rose - or see v4 suddenly replace old Digg, I just think that's the right call. You know, we can assume anything, but I'd rather hear it from the powers that be.
I did notice last night that I was unable to change any of my account settings on digg.com - getting this message - PLEASE NOTE: We're migrating all your settings over to the new Digg. Unfortunately, your settings will be temporarily limited. But I didn't assume that new Digg was nigh.
Perhaps new.digg.com is going to be upgraded to a beta version? Doesn't that make just as much sense, if we're going to make assumptions? There are so many features missing from the alpha version we've been using that it makes sense, at least in my mind, that there will be further testing phases. Not to mention errors are still rife on new.digg.com - it's not as if we've seen a final product at all yet.
Even digg itself says in the new.digg.com FAQ "Are there more features coming to Alpha? You bet! We’ll be collecting your feedback and putting your ideas into action right away, so come back to see what we’ve tweaked. Please send us any feedback you have on what you like or would like by clicking on ‘Feedback’ on the bar at the bottom of any page on the Alpha site."
And since not everyone on digg.com has access to digg v4, and because invitation requests are still being accepted, it seems like it might be just to allow greater access and further testing - i.e. how will it work when everyone has access?
But hey, I have no clue. Only digg and the people who work there know for sure what's up. I'll wait to hear from them before I pass judgment or attempt to act as if I know what is going on.

I'm glad to see someone being logical. Thank you.
jaksuJul 31, 2010
I'm not glad, I think we should jump to conclusions

There's a mat for that.
crunchydeluxeJul 30, 2010
Logic has no place on Digg. Leave.
doublsh0tJul 31, 2010
Well I often send an email to Digg offering feedback...and they have never acted on them. "Putting my ideas into action right away" my ass. Here's what I sent them last:
Digg 4 Problems:
- So far, the "Top News" isn't currently matching the real front page on Digg--I think it's lagging behind, which makes me not want to use Digg 4 Beta as much.
- This might be related, but I do like the 'Made popular" thing from the current Digg, that doesn't seem to be on the front of the Digg 4 "Top News" area.
- Although I love the new digging feature where it scrolls up a digg once you digg something in Digg 4, I hate how, if you accidentally click the yellow border on teh bottom or sides of the "digg" area, it goes into the story/comment area. PLEASE fix this, it'll drive me nuts. When I want to go into the comments page, I click on the comments hot link below the description.
- I just made a dumb comment and wanted to edit it, but I can't see the comment i made on the story. Something's obviously messed up here.
- I tweeted this in and got a reply saying it'll be passed along, but here I go again: I'd love to see Digg 4 have better widescreen support. I have a 1920x1200 resolution monitor and the space on this site could def be arranged more efficiently I would assume.
- Also for some reason the whiteness of Digg 4 in its current iteration is bugging me, very vampiric and bothersome to my eyes.
- I should really be getting paid for this lol.
nathanloehleinJul 31, 2010
In regards to your first 2 points: they changed the algo, which is why top news does not match new.digg

I used to be a pretty heavy user of it. I haven't logged in for quite a while, so maybe some of it has improved. I'll take another look at it.
But I'm already getting pretty involved in a lot of stuff on FB, and the friends list is growing every day. There are a lot more topics, and a lot wider audience.
Yup, my bjornskimn account is still active there, I'll give them another run.

The new Digg is still definitely far from ready. Beta if anything though.
jimpbblmkJul 31, 2010
Beta usually means code freeze, so I hope not.
atomic1fireJul 31, 2010
It has a few kinks, and there are some features I would still like to see,
More customization (subscribe-able tags would be nice, since it makes categories in My News possible)
Going by major accounts only sucks when you have a bunch of new news, but hardly any discussion,
Most of the major Digg accounts are users, and not famous people or sites.
thefirewireJul 31, 2010
I submitted a bunch of bug reports then came back here because it's so far beyond ready. Need's lots of work. hope they get all the kinks worked out before it goes live.

forseti1590Jul 31, 2010
Yeah I've been in the alpha for about a month now...I stopped using it because it was consistently ~8 hours behind the normal digg in terms of stories on the front page. On top of that the way comments are viewed is almost as bad as Reddit...in fact, possibly worse.
mabsarkJul 31, 2010
Reddit's commenting system is far better than Digg's. It's the presentation of the system that sucks, and that is easily fixed with a Stylish script.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

netneutralityJul 30, 2010
Nah they wouldn't be that stupid to lock themselves into the current social network trend. As soon as that went away Digg would collapse with it.

Goodbye digg, it has been fun.

antdudeJul 31, 2010
Me too. Thanks for the shirt, Digg, but I am most likely Digg if you use v4 layout!
culytJul 31, 2010
Looks sucky to me too. Why do sites insist on copying what every other popular site does.
Digg is (was) community based tech news/social bookmarking. It used to be great until they decided they wanted to be more like Facebook and added 'friends'. Now %80 of the front page stories are just done by swarm Diggers.
You need 300+ friends to any anything on the front page no matter how good it is and heaps of stuff on there should never have ended up there, things that get front paged without 1 comment, or have a page of totally negative comments.
Then they added the Diggbar. Not one person likes that but we are stuck with it anyway (fortunately they let you turn it off, but only because the alternate would have been a mass uprising.)
The new Digg is going to show you news based on your friends. Maybe that will counteract the swarm digging or paid digging since you can just friend people with similar interests and avoid marketing hives. I also wonder if it could get worse but I guess I'll wait and see. One problem is it does fracture the news people read on Digg.
I also don't like the new look. Gradients/gloss are just visual clutter. Digg currently has nice simple flat colours that don't distract.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
"The new Digg is going to show you news based on your friends."
Which means it will be come an echo-chamber, and you'll only be getting stories by like-minded people.
I LIKE some of the opposing viewpoints and stories presented by people who have them. I read a LOT of stuff that I wouldn't have ordinarily.
If Digg becomes just another echo-chamber, it will be come worthless.
Closed AccountJul 31, 2010
I only have about 100 mutual friends and have had 6 front page stories in the last two months.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
You're doing better than me. I've only got 12 in total.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
Why bury Dilberto? That certainly wasn't a disagreeable statement.
mabsarkJul 31, 2010
"You need 300+ friends to any anything on the front page no matter how good it is and heaps of stuff on there should never have ended up there, things that get front paged without 1 comment, or have a page of totally negative comments."
That's not quite true. http://digg.com/mods/How_to_remove_the_Digg_Dragon_Age_ad In the days of the Draogon Age ad, I got a post (explaining how to remove it without messing up the page) to the front page and I've always had 0 friends. All my other posts have had about 1 digg though.
There's a funny story with that post. Just before I made my post, Borez made a post asking if anyone hates the Dragon Age ad, http://digg.com/design/Who_on_Digg_hates_this My post was right behind it, climbing with it and keeping pace. Then, Borez's post was promoted to the front page, but mine wasn't. It was stuck at the top of the upcoming section with a few hundred votes and gathering more, so I sent an email to Digg telling them to stop blocking it otherwise my next post would be a Stylish scirpt that makes Reddit look like Digg. A few minutes later, my post was promoted to the front page and the Digg blog provided a link to it for users screaming at them about that horrific ad. Coincidence, I think not?
I was recently buried for providing a script to return Google to normal when they forced that picture on the front page nonsense, and some retard who replied was dugg for giving me crap about the script. I decided not to bother posting any more technical info to Digg, setup a Reddit account, and created a userstyle to improve the UI.
In the next day or two, I'm going to post a write up on reverse engineering the Dell Restore system and how to create your own, but because of the retards, it'll be getting posted to Reddit as a self post instead of Digg.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
Can you still work on that script that makes Reddit look like Digg?
mabsarkJul 31, 2010
I could do, but my Reddit styles look better than Digg. Try Reddit Blueskin or Reddit OneBar Light (or the dark versions, Reddit Darkskin and Reddit DarkBar). If you don't like them better than Digg then I'll write you a Digg style.

smpaisnutrientsJul 30, 2010

crunchydeluxeJul 31, 2010
Will someone PLEASE give me a straight answer... what the hell *is* "Web 2.0", anyway? The whole concept is like "Hope and Change"; all amazing sounding, yet nothing of any substance.
shaunywJul 31, 2010
I know that for me a good user experience is DIGG.
I also know that for me a bad user experience is New Digg.
Maybe when forced upon me I will get used to it but then I probably will find something easier somewhere else on the web.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'actually knows what they are talking about' user experience is subjective to the user surely? DIGG works for me just fine. Also 'web sites that dont grow wont make it in web 2.0' What does that mean? Growth does not equal quality often quite the opposite and is not web 2.0 old now?
radicouJul 31, 2010
Oh, well it's the second version of the web.
smpaisnutrientsJul 31, 2010
digg as it currently stands is a web 1.0 site. Not nearly as bad as other sites (reddit, craigslist) but it is. Look for yourself, the leadership has said the same thing I said. It may not be a horrid UI mess but that doesn't mean it needs to stay the same.
Digg wants to grow as site and as such they are going to cater to the way people surf the net now. People (in general) want to be able to link everything they do. And digg wants to be able to capitalize on that from both the user and advertiser. If they don't do SOMETHING then they are going to start losing users to whoever does this first. It wouldn't take much for some other site to come out that does everything digg does and more. What would that mean for this site?
Personally I like digg as it is now, but that is because I am used to it. But I understand that they need to find a way to break into the new web, or there won't even be a digg anymore. YOU need to understand that. You may prefer digg as it is now, as I'm sure many of us do. But you simply have to accept that this is how it is.
or come up with a better idea.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
crunchydeluxeJul 31, 2010
Here's a better idea: retool the current site to play friendly with all this "linking". It wouldn't be difficult at all, to keep the UI as is. Change for the sake of change is always a bad idea.
avernessJul 31, 2010
Digg works just fine, and if it's making a profit now, then that's all they need. Digg doesn't have to die for them to start a new website that's completely different. There could be two websites, this one, and the one that sucks with a similar name.
antdudeJul 31, 2010
Same here. Also, it is too messy/confusing!

smpaisnutrientsJul 31, 2010
its more then just some linking a new paint job. yes it is confusing for now, but you WILL get used to it, and you likely will prefer it (once the bugs are worked out.) I really like the new digg, I just wish it was a little more developed.
Every time facebook redesigns, everyone gets upset about that too. but you get used to it.
falldogJul 30, 2010
I must say I don't like New Digg as it is now. Hopefully they'll add some customization features so I can ignore the whole "My News" section (sorry, I don't want to develop a whole friend base just to see what they're trending, I prefer to see what the whole community is on about) and filter out the subjects and styles (photos and videos) I don't want to see.
ledzepaddictJul 30, 2010
Thought the same thing. I just loaded my digg bookmark straight to the new Digg's top news.
ciarJul 31, 2010
that's what I do now with old digg :)
dodobutt222Jul 31, 2010
I agree, I don't want the my news section at all, and even the top news page doesn't match the current homepage...there is no real "top ten" which is usually what I come to check everyday :/
nascenttJul 31, 2010
It's horrible because I followed content providers i like, but now get hundreds of non-news stories with 1 digg. I only used digg to get the highly rated stories. It's a complete waste of time without filtering.
drwebzAug 2, 2010
Agreed! why'd they remove photos and videos. so weird!
dmcbrideJul 30, 2010
I personally don't like it :/ stopped using it a week or so ago.
The news I get is relevant to me and my interests which is cool, but the custom page is by default now and it seems (this is just an opinion mind you so take it for a grain of salt) that I get MUCH LESS news than what I am used to. Clicking back to the main page seems to at least get me some fresh stuff.
This could also be that I won't have to deal with that custom page if I simply don't login - which will be fine then and may be an easy fix.

I've been using the new Digg and it definitely needs some work. This story is currently on the front page of Digg, but it's not on the front page of the New Digg (Top News section). Why not?? I thought Top News was supposed to match the old (current) Digg.
Closed AccountJul 30, 2010
What, you didn't add the category to your "My News" section?
That whole feature defeats the purpose of digg entirely. Any link aggregator site should be about seeing pretty much everything all of the time. Half the fun of digg is seeing random s**t come up that you wouldn't normally find on the front page of reddit.
The whole thing smacks of facebook's useless "Top News" feed that shows you s**t from DAYS ago that your friends have posted. How it rates it that way, no one knows. But the new system seems gameable if you have the right amount of people on your payroll.
zb757Jul 31, 2010
FB's "Top News" is one of THE most annoying things about the site's design. I don't give a s**t about most of it anyway and it's all old
sfrenchJul 31, 2010
"I thought Top News was supposed to match the old (current) Digg."
Absolutely not. You may see some overlap, but the methods for promotion are completely different (at least they were when I wrote it)
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
I hate to say it, but I'm not impressed with your work.

Are you at liberty to explain?
sfrenchJul 31, 2010
@bjornski - "I'm not impressed with your work."
I can't say a lot about it, but I expect that it will get much better. Also I think the new digg does something very right in defaulting to the My News section. You are a far better algorithm than anything a computer could provide for you. So choosing friends with good digging behaviors will give you great results. I've noticed that my digging behavior has more than doubled, and I see content that I have a high correlation with, much quicker.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
"I see content that I have a high correlation with, much quicker."
Right, it's become an echo-chamber of like minded people. Not a place to go for a good back and forth discussion with people from all parts of the spectrum.
bjornskiAug 1, 2010
I don't come to Digg to see "content that I have a high correlation with".
I come here for the debate with people I don't agree with all the time. I come here for the verbal sparring, not just to see stuff I already know I have an interest in.
Hell, if that's what I wanted, I'd just subscribe to RSS feeds.

I'm in the beta and I'm not afraid to say it because I could care less if I get B&. But if you like facebook, you'll love the new digg. It's a horrible mish-mash of crap. It's going to be great for power users. All of those buddies that have buddies that boost their diggs. It's going to suck for the average person. I think the new algorithm they use involves a bunch of math, no lube, and a large dong shaped carrot.

why did they move all of the categories to the left? they're fine at the top :/
blaculasfroJul 31, 2010
I don't get the hate. The categories being on the left makes them more prevalent and part of the design. With old Digg, I never care to click the categories. I will with new Digg. Furthermore, the new design is a lot more clean.
I haven't used the new Digg yet, but from what I've seen, it looks like a cleaner old Digg with more functionality.
crunchydeluxeJul 31, 2010
Listen, I like FB, and I HATE the new Digg. Don't lump them together.
smpaisnutrientsJul 30, 2010
Dunno if its my machine or browser, but my layout seems screwed up on new digg. its dominated by a tesla ad and I can't even submit anymore. I've been using original digg for over a week because of it.

New Digg sucks. I think I'll just use Reddit now.
crunchydeluxeJul 31, 2010
Wow. That's a damning indictment of v4, if ever I've heard one.
bloodwineJul 31, 2010
to be honest, the only reason I visit Digg instead of Reddit is that Reddit's UI is horrible. If Digg screws up their UI then there really isn't much leverage left for Digg.
evilpigJul 31, 2010
I used to be a digg user who hated reddit because of the UI. Now that I've overcome the UI hump (along with some greasemonkey skins) reddit is a much funner place to be. More content (yes, half of diggs front page articles are there 1 day after reddit). I still come back to digg once and a while, but I am in the digg beta and I hate it. I suggest we all give reddit a shot because it may impress you.

I started using reddit more and more after I went and saw that it really is true that stories that are there one day are on digg the next. Makes digg feel like old news. Man if they upgraded their layout and comment system I'd leave digg in a heartbeat.

Same here. Started on digg, but now 80% of the time I am on reddit.

Reddit at least brings a sense of community. This new digg is just terrible.

Don't hold your breath for a Reddit UI change. Reddit fans embrace it like it's their own ugly child.
mabsarkJul 31, 2010
For those wanting to give Reddit a go but hate the UI, install a userstyle from here, http://userstyles.org/styles/browse/reddit.com.
retsigJul 31, 2010
Meh, happens with every change. Some complain, some don't, some fake like they are not complaining but they really are. Then there are those who threaten to leave the site, etc, etc, etc, etc,.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

if it was going to become like new youtube, then i will leave digg !
more connections with fb and iphone, just are disgusting !
frazzletJul 30, 2010
Let me default to 'Top news'. It needs to be done.
Also, the font size is annoyingly small in a lot of areas.
ciarJul 31, 2010
bookmark it on top news.
spiffywilcoJul 31, 2010
You did miss it, it's stuck at the bottom right of every page of the beta. Click it, it's the link that says "give us feedback".
frazzletJul 31, 2010
Yes, they added it after my comment.

Follow up time. Now that DNF actually *gasp* IS out, have you played it? And does it live up to it's crappy reviews?

I can promise you this, I wont be telling you guys how to remove the ad without f**king up the page this time round.

Is this going to be like New Coke where it sucks and everyone demands Digg Classic back?
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
I've already tried the new formula and gone back to the old one.
If they remove the old one, I'll just switch brands entirely.
ciarJul 31, 2010
I wish I had been around for New Coke. I will always wonder what it tasted like.

I might just not be looking hard enough, but I couldn't find subcategories on the Digg Alpha - so "Technology" is as specific as I can be. Not cool. Also, I hate how you're not able to see how many diggs your comments on your profile page at a glance, you have to click through to the comment in the story to find it. And then it takes you to the wrong comment. So far, colour me unimpressed.
cambonezJul 31, 2010
The new Digg needs additional customization options, particularly the option to hide the "My News" section somewhere it won't get in the way. Because I know I'm not going to be using it. It's about community, not a stream of stories that have 1 digg each.
charlesmayJul 31, 2010
Huh.. Those kicks were fast as lightnin'

Kevin Rose. If there is one thread you NEED TO READ right now, it's this one.
You're going to lose most of the people who love Digg the most if you go through with this.

Kevin doesn't give a f**k about us anymore. That's part of the reason I'm on this name instead of my well known digg ID.

It's been broken for years. If you aren't a power user, your story will have a very, very small chance of hitting the front page.

...but anyone can become a power user.

I don't get it, its kind of like twitter by following news sources, but news sources have twitter and if i like a news source i'll add it to my bookmarks, i want to see what the community as a whole likes
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
Me too, I don't just want to follow stories by people I follow. I like to see ALL of the popular ones.
vibr8Jul 31, 2010
Hopefully it'll copy Reddit a bit more.
lolcoelacanthJul 31, 2010
Mr. Rose please give us an option to use the old Digg layout. I don't want to have to switch to Reddit.
