60% of Twitter users burnout within 1 month. That ship is sinking.

"Burn" is too strong a word. How about "plop"?

Twitter. Where everyone talks and no one listens.™

It's worse for Facebook and Linkedin. A 40% retention rate is very very good indeed.

Twitter (along with pretty much any social network) is centered around feeding narcissism. Don't see that going away anytime soon, as much as I hate twitter.
bps04aAug 9, 2010
Wrong. Prosebeforehos sinks before twitter. Bets? I wager the life of a chicken.

ofnumbersAug 9, 2010
For the longest time, people took part in scheduled events on Twitter - Things like #FollowFriday and #MusicMonday etc. As of the last month or two, basically no one does anything anymore. I'm surprised no one is blaming it on #I<3Bieber trending for as long as the well in the Gulf was leaking.
crickey23Aug 9, 2010
I blame the ability to use hashtags for the s**tty trending topics. It's easy to start a trend: First, you take a ridiculous idea (let's use "You're going to get dumped if..."), then you remove all grammar and spaces ("yourgonnagetdumpedif"), then you add a pound sign at the front (#yourgonnagetdumpedif). Now, make up as many as you can using that hashtag, and soon everyone will be doing it! I don't mean this in any sort of racist way, but it is the black demographic of twitter who push these topics. I have plenty of black friends who use twitter, and once nighttime hits they all start tweeting furiously.
Don't even get me started on the Team Followback bulls**t.
ofnumbersAug 9, 2010
So what you're saying is... You're not down with the weekly #umitebeuglyif????
andyroo316Aug 9, 2010
It's not a pound sign. It's called a HASHtag for a reason, idiot.
captobliviousAug 9, 2010
It's a POUND sign, just because you wanna call it a hash doesn't change it's origins..
And yes it's also C-pound (C programming is not music)
higherlogicAug 9, 2010
That's so true though, this girl I know (she's mixed but would probably call herself black) who posts on Twitter (she's rare, I don't think any of my other girl friends do), is ALWAYS doing that with hash tags, e.g. #mynextgirlfriend, #notsomuch, #lolla, #go, #realtweet, #whiletwitterwasdown, etc.
What's worse, she feels the need to sync her Twitter to Facebook, so I get the awesome joy of reading her tweets on Facebook. She signed up on Twitter almost a month ago, and already has close to 2k tweets. Her FB page has nothing but Twitter posts on it too.
rdebathAug 9, 2010
Oh dear, poor ignorant Americans.
The use of # for "Pound" comes from the early twentieth century when people were writing 20lb on paper with abominable handwriting and the poor typist though it looked like the # key on the keyboard. Obviously for this to happen, the # predates the pound name.
The Pound name was later enforced by British people calling ASCII character 35 the pound symbol. Of course they were looking at UK ASCII and the £ symbol whereas the Americans were looking at the # symbol with the same character code.
The original reason for including the # character on the typewriter was as an error character, to in modern parlance X out any errors. It was based on the handwritten technique of scribbling a cross-hatch pattern over the mistake. Hence it's "hash" name.
BTW: The octothorpe name is just some telephone engineer's attempt to clean up the mess. As "the mess" actually only exists in America he was presumably American, I guess his name was Thorpe.

i still don't understand what i was supposed to use twitter for. perhaps someone could tell me their favorite use?
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
I signed up because my favourite artist signed up. Now I can follow what she says instantly instead of her telling the record company which tells the web team to update her website. Not only that, but there is a level of interaction in which I can reply to her tweets and in which she can randomly select such replies to read and possibly answer. It allows a better experience for fans in my opinion than anything that has come before.
andyroo316Aug 9, 2010
* Now I can follow what she says when she tells the record company to tell the web team to tell an intern to update her Twitter.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
You can believe that if you want, but this record company is clueless. They used to take weeks to update the website, and now we get pictures of her in the studio or at a party or even crossing a bridge instantly.
The question is, why do we still have record companies in this day and age?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The question is, how close are you to actually being a stalker?
freeridstyleeAug 9, 2010
It's kind of like digg, I go there to get news, follow a lot of tech sites and sports teams and get linked to articles. It's like an RSS feed for me. I never tweet.
czarcasmAug 9, 2010
Like I posted up there ^^ I follow local news organizations, who in turn follow other local tweets, they then RT local breaking news of which I get in my stream.
If theres breaking news or traffic I'll get that seconds after something happens and often will see a pic someone took with their phone and tweet-posted.
Its instant so you get big (local) news long before radio.
I hate using 'tweet' though.
kooch888Aug 9, 2010
its best use to me is just an RSS feed. its fairly simple to find what you like and just kinda go from there. make lists (groupings of peoples tweets) and just read whatever interests you. if following someone becomes annoying its simple to just unfollow them or take them off one of your lists
also it has some uses if you can get a friend or two to sign up. works well when you wanna tell them something thats not really important enough to send them a facebook message or text them. just a place to put some ramblings or musings.
speccyAug 9, 2010
I follow many science/tech sites on Twitter, all the top ones have Twitter feeds. It's very good for keeping up with the latest happenings.
As mentioned before, you can create lists. For example I have a "Sci/Tech" list which has feeds from Slashdot/New Scientist/Scientific American/Engadget/etc.
i tend to use it for getting the latest info. rather than "tweeting".
satori3000Aug 9, 2010
the place I go to in order to see a pic of a whale being lifted by many small birds.
thelegaceAug 9, 2010
I kinda use it to keep important links handy, it is easy to delete them and see them, also good for lists. Basically I don't give a s**t about social networking aspects, it's just a great way when I travel from computer to computer to keep links easy to find when I need them quick, rather than having to constantly search for them.

infenweAug 9, 2010
Twitter is the best thing to happen to Magic the Gathering tournament coverage since podcasts from events with a sub 3 hour delay. I never really "tweet" anything other than responding to the occasional odd thing. Essentially I'm just using it because the people I'm following are using it.
dephextwinAug 9, 2010
But the word "tweet" has been around since at least the 1850s!
rdebathAug 9, 2010
I agree, it's "twitter" so they are twits.
epopliveAug 9, 2010

fredfredricksonAug 9, 2010
I can't stand Twitter, and I hate the word "tweet" when used to describe what people do on Twitter.
"He tweeted all day"
"Dude, tweet me sometime"
"People are tweeting all day"
It makes people sound like some kind of f**king stupid birds, or like they are farting or something.

rdebathAug 9, 2010
But a LOT poorer than it used to be.
jdh24Aug 9, 2010
This article misses the point. Most people aren't on Twitter to get a bunch of followers. This article invests too much in the idea of 'fame.' Most people don't want or need fame.
nepidaeAug 9, 2010
People are on twitter to either be famous or to follow someone famous. That is all twitter is.
czarcasmAug 9, 2010
Or follow local news organizations that are on twitter. I get the most up to the second traffic when I drive to SF or South/East-Bay. I know where NOT to drive when theres problems.
For instance when that shoot-out happened in Oakland on the 580 a coupla weeks ago & snarled traffic, I saw that on twitter and knew not to drive there and drove an alternate route.
jkalAug 9, 2010
if you really think that, then you are in the very small minority.
the reason most "Social networks" are popular is because normal everyday people feel they have a way to be heard by others, and to ensure that happens people try and acquire as many friends/followers/fans as they can.
tek69Aug 9, 2010
I disagree nep, I follow very few famous people. I tend to search twitter for a topic I like and then pick random people out of the list. The search function makes twitter as far as i'm concerned. If anythings going on, search for it and twitter has tons of different perspectives on it.
nepidaeAug 9, 2010
That is really cool. I guess I am pretty jaded so it is really nice to see this.
tek69Aug 9, 2010
I was in complete agreement with you until a little while ago. I really didn't see the point, but try searching something obscure, and it's actually fun. I love seeing who's talking about dwarf fortress.

Now that this is out of the way, HP should probably spend some time in sexual harassment workshops so they don't have to fire anymore CEOs.
prolianceAug 9, 2010
All HP employees take a standards of business conduct class each year, including the last two CEO's who were fired for violating it.
And I would guess that 99% of HP employees were glad to see Hurd go.
hivoltage815Aug 9, 2010
It was a little quip referencing current events, not something that needed to be taken serious. I don't honestly think they need more sexual harassment training.
Relax.

gusterbearAug 9, 2010
What I find amazing is people who cannot wrap their minds around the concept/use of twitter. Not that it is really that hard to understand: someone took the concepts of RSS, SMS, and Blogging, put them into a cage and forced them to mate, thus producing Twitter.
andreoAug 9, 2010
Twitter pretty much went mostly unused by me. Sure I follow the tech news sites. But they pretty much just post what is going into their RSS feed. And I can check the RSS feeds any time I want from my desktop or phone. And I won't run a Twitter client in the background for my phone because why should I waste the battery life on something like that.
But Twitter did come in handy with Flipboard. Since now everything that gets posted gets put into Flipboard and its not just a link to the story, it's the actual story sitting there waiting to be read.
