This really sucks. We are all criminals now for having differences in opinions.
It is like the United States of China.

The list of words better be a joke. That's crazy.
idiggaponyJun 25, 2010
Fortunately, the "list of words" is total bulls**t, and using them won't incriminate you.
chiltontippinJun 25, 2010
Wow, a lot of those words seem pretty harmless to me. Where'd you get that list of words? I agree with the main premise of your article though. It's scary when the government is trying to get the Internet kill switch and the FCC, another government agency, is moving to get more control of broadband. I thought the Internet was all about defying governmental control and promoting an unabridged democracy...

What list are they using, the dictionary?
This is just going to encourage more people to be hackers.
How many months would it take for companies to start getting in on this and start spamming my inbox based on what I have emailed to friends and family?

railgun morse code on custom UT3 maps is the only way to be 100% private
toastjamJun 25, 2010
Well, there would still be a signal in the bitstream, presumably. The fire events must have a specific code, paired with the character. So it wouldn't be too hard to pull those out of traffic and plot them over time. Of course, you'd have to know what you were looking for, so it's still a pretty cool form of steganography!
Perhaps you could obfuscate it with things like character position in relation to the map--hidden state that a raw bit level search wouldn't see.
tomleykisJun 25, 2010
And we criticize China, even as we copy their police state tactics. Great.
rmxzJun 25, 2010
From the article "certain words automatically incriminate you if used in emails"
I don't understand why encrypted email isn't used more.
Amazes me that companies let their sales people send non-encrypted emails over the internet. Heck, every kid with an e-commerce store figures out how to run https -- but somehow everyone still sends email over unencrypted protocols.
Bizarre.
tomleykisJun 25, 2010

Sometimes when I'm bored, I google things such as "how to build a nuclear device that will release radioactive bees" or "how to insert calcium deprived maggots into the bone marrow of Sarah Palin's assbone" or "can I buy tritium and plutonium with food stamps or WIC." The FBI has yet to arrest me.
herrohkittehJun 26, 2010

That is the stupidest list of danger words I have ever seen. I sent a dozen email a day and easily half or more contain at least one of those words and so far no one has arrested me, nor do I see any suspicious vans outside. This is obviously a joke or a seriously disturbed mind.
marx2kJun 25, 2010
What's hilarious here, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, is that this article talks about 'big brother' conducting electronic keyword searches. What it's basing its assertion off of is the fact that the government requested E-Mail transcriptions from Lehman Brothers in reference to their bankruptcy and most of the words searched for are specifically targeted in regards to a bankruptcy case.
Meanwhile, the article and now Digg is all "OMG BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING".
Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
idiggaponyJun 25, 2010
No, you're right.
This is one of those times when dozens of diggers horribly embarrass themselves by flying into a crazed conniption about something that doesn't even exist, because they didn't actually read the article. I wish this was a more rare occurrence than it is, but seriously, this is the worst tin foil hat party I've seen on digg in many, many months.
marx2kJun 25, 2010
I dunno, this one is pretty bad too: http://digg.com/business_finance/Obama_Administration_Announces_a_Massive_Piracy_Crackdown
Article talks about an imminent piracy crackdown and uses no sources and has one quote from Biden s**t-talking internet piracy. The entire thread is "OMG I CANT BELIEVE I VOTED FOR OBAMA HOW CAN HE DO THIS TO US" type dumb s**t.
sambyJun 25, 2010
You're right. 9 out of 10 diggers won't realize that the government isn't searching their email for these words.
" Is Digg really losing its ability to read an article critically and look up sources?"
You're new to digg aren't you? :)
idiggaponyJun 25, 2010
How the f**k did a mind-bogglingly stupid piece of bulls**t like this reach the front page? People, this is really, really, really, really stupid. We really need to get our act together here. I suspect that nobody actually read this article, because, when people post comments that are as paranoid and irrational as this article is, we tend to give them dozens of negative diggs.
Using these words doesn't "incriminate you." You are not going to go to jail for using the word "significantly" in an email. According to the article, these happen to be some of the search terms that certain attorneys used in a certain court case. To say that using these words might incriminate you is like saying that using the word "vertebrate" will make people suspect you are a dinosaur, because one time some guy googled the word "vertebrate" while writing a paper about dinosaurs.

I will not change what I say, nor who I say it to. I believe in this thing called the 1st Amendment. Did I mention that some female federal agents have really nice t**s? I just want to reach out and squeeze them. Although I bet they need a haircut down below. Still, I'd be happy to make a 'liquid' deposit in a few of them. ;)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You know why you're allowed to own guns?
So you 'might' put down the government?
Fidel Castro needed only handful of guns to start and win - he just took the weapons of the 'professionals'...
No, you're allowed to own guns so that when they arrest you they can display you in the news as a gun tooting terrorist.
You're allowed to own guns so that the police has probable cause to use maximum force and shock and awe you in submission.
You're allowed to own guns so they can send an ATF team in the middle of the night storming your home.
You're allowed to own guns so they can denounce you as a terrorists when all else fails.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

f**k the DHS, all the Democrats, all the Republicans, Obama, Palin, that ugly Pelosi woman, senile old Newt Gingrich and whoever else you can think of. McChrystal was right: Obama is a worthless bag of goat s**t who isn't fit to be the White House gardener, let alone the White House occupant. Every Republican in the senate cheats on his taxes and has non-consensual anal sex with the page boys. Also f**k the TSA, the FBI, the CIA, the CBP, the ICE and all the low-level thugs and window-licking retards that populate the s**t-slick halls of their bureaucracies. f**k each and every last one of them.
Also, f**k that idiotic baggage screener at DFW that kept wanting to AXE me questions. f**k him twice.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

whatthefuJun 25, 2010
This article is ridiculously sensationalist. They were investigating 34 million Lehman Brothers documents by looking for certain words (like Bank of New York, among other things if you actually look at the .pdf) used within a specific time frame. How is that monitoring "wrong" words? What does that have to do with censorship? We have to be vigilant about privacy, but holy s**t you guys, this is nothing but douche bags desperately trying to ramp up fear.
idiggaponyJun 25, 2010
When absurdly stupid stories like this one reach the front page, a lot of us chalk it up to the fact that many diggers just reflexively digg anything that pushes their political buttons, whatever those buttons happen to be, before they even take the time to read the article.
But there's another phenomenon at work here. The submitter, zetadog, is a member of the group of power users who manipulate digg and control its content by amassing large groups of "friends," and automatically digging their friends' submissions, without even reading them. Of the first 184 diggs that this story received, 44 were from zetadog's friends. I doubt that many of them bothered to actually click the link and see what the submission was. Only one stuck around to comment.
dickwilhelmJun 27, 2010
This reminds me of the jokes about being a SA members automatically gets you searched at airports.
Although it is fun to use words like "binary explosive" in the same email as your vacation plans just make sure you have your sexy underwear on when you depart. >:D
