If you are using a service like foursquare and privacy is really that much of an issue for you, might I suggest just writing down places your at throughout the day on simple note paper. Feel free to show all your friends, family and/or complete strangers.
I'm sure they'll care greatly.

Gir?
tgc1Jun 30, 2010
I disagree. I'm a web developer, and people who use services like that end up fed up and feel stupid when they are done trying to wrap their head around how s**t works. Then they come see me and I build s**t for them. One way or another they come to me.

“I’m trying to be white-hat,” Andersen said. “It definitely felt icky at times.”
is this guy 5 years old?
cedexJun 30, 2010
He said he felt "icky", like someone touched him down there!
Don't mock him!
hatepasteJun 30, 2010
are you?
xaxen8Jun 30, 2010
Goodness! He'll know you went to McDonalds! The sky is falling!
covertbadgerJun 30, 2010
Your sky might be falling if this guy publishes your data and your boss sees that you were at McDonalds when you were supposed to be at a client 30 miles away but couldn't because you were 'stuck in traffic'. Or when your wife sees you were at the McDonalds near that mistress you'd promised to stop seeing when you'd told her you were 'working late'. Or when your medical insurer sees you were at McDonalds when your doctor has told your fat ass not to eat any more junk food for risk of having a heart attack.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ripterJun 30, 2010
then you're stupid for checking into foursquare while doing those things.
covertbadgerJun 30, 2010
Yes, unquestionably. But I bet people don't *notice* how stupid it is until a) it's pointed out, like you and I have just done, or b) they get screwed as a result of doing it. People do stupid things.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"Or when your wife sees you were at the McDonalds just down the streer from that mistress you'd promised to stop seeing, when you'd told her you were 'working late'. "
If she believes you were really working late after she caught you with another woman, she'll believe pretty much any excuse you give her.

Why would anyone use such a service anyway? Didn't people get paranoid a few years back that the government were tracking their movements with currency use etc? Now everyone actually reports it themselves.
f**king crazy.
designcodeJun 30, 2010
I wonder people who are using this service have anything left private? They don't really care about their privacy. Websites like Facebook and Foursquare have turned people into idiots. 5 years ago, sharing your location with so many strangers was a rather dangerous thing, but now ... SIGH
oea420Jun 30, 2010
haha yeah.. I remember a time on the internet when information was a form of currency/power...
being on IRC in the early days and using lexis nexis to get 'd0x' on people... then actually feeling that fear when someone was threatening to 'drop ur d0x' and messaged you the correct info...
This kind of 'danger' can still be seen in some online communities.. but even the goddamn 4chan kids have moved away from it.. taking a 'noble' stance of not attacking individuals at people's request

It sounds like it's a good thing that I have no idea what Foursquare is.
roiperezJun 30, 2010
I stopped using Forsquare a while ago. Not only did I realise I was sharing my location with people I didn't know/give a f**k about, I also realised they could not give a s**t where I was too. Upon reading this article I deleted the app from my phone too and am headed to delete my account right after I post this comment. I am getting a bit fed up with how lightly tech companies are taking our privacy, while we give them our full trust of being able to keep it private. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
cawpinJun 30, 2010
They didn't TAKE anything from you. I use Gowalla but I don't expect much privacy from them. I have my check-ins all private and don't check in until I'm leaving someplace.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

One word - Facebook.

Times and people change. YOU grew up wanting privacy, but this generation does not value privacy as you did. WE are a connected generation and are use to knowing everything about our friends and families. One day, everyone will be connected 24/7 and WE will look at the new generation thinking how stupid they are for not having their own thoughts...
Times change, that doesn't make people idiots, it makes you one for not understanding society.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

There is truth to this. This generation posts a pretty picture of themselves on a social network, and expects to be called beautiful & cute by their peers. Instant gratification!

"WE are a connected generation and are use to knowing everything about our friends and families"
The correct situation is
"WE are a connected generation and are use to knowing everything about our friends and families and unknowns, thieves, sex offenders unknowingly. They know the colors of our underwear and also where we are heading to at the moment"

I have to agree that if you're using FourSquare to post check-ins at places that you consider private, then you're probably not that smart. If you're using it to let people know that you went to McDonald's or down to the Pub then who cares?
shinkouJun 30, 2010
It's not a bug! It's a feature!
leemapleJun 30, 2010
In my day Foursquare was a game we played in the playground, quite fun. What is this new foursquare you speak of? *Googling* Dear Lord, a rubber ball and painted square are infinitely cooler than this s**t.
diggeradoJun 30, 2010
Privacy invading technology is invasive.
socialstacyJun 30, 2010
If you're using an online service that tells people your exact location in realtime and you're concerned about privacy then you need to re-evaluate yourself. By now we should know that the actual security measures of these social networks are imperfect. Assuming your privacy settings are completely accurate is a bad idea.
datdamonfooJun 30, 2010
I still don't understand what Foursquare is.

Dugg for calling him a coder, and not the overused hyper-sensationalist term "hacker"
