Apple is notorious for keeping their "fixes" private. A few years ago when the now archaic iPod-video came out a court ruled that Apple had to create and make for sale replacement batteries, that way consumers wouldn't have to just buy a new iPod. It's funny how they decided not to produce one of those funky hipster Apple commercials to let the public know lol.
seltaeb4Aug 7, 2010
That must be one awesome playlist.

1st gen Nano, really? Does anybody still even use those?
johnnydiggmeAug 7, 2010
I still have one, I use it for the odd run or bike ride, when I don't want to bring my iPhone.
I don't use it everyday, all day, but it still does what it was made to.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
is yours plastic or aluminum? if it failed would you want to be part of the class after 5 or 6 years?
johnnydiggmeAug 9, 2010
Mine is aluminum, aren't all the 1st Gens? I'm not sure.
Anyway, if it stopped working, I wouldn't necessarily care. But if it caught fire, then yes I'd likely want Apple to have to answer to that.
If they're giving out free battery's because of this, then sure I'd sign up for one. I'd just get another 6 years out of it. ha

"1st gen Nano, really? Does anybody still even use those?"
It is pretty funny. So about 6 or 7 years after people bought these things, when probably 99% of people who bought them no longer use them, Apple is ordered to publish advice on it's website about a problem that was virtually non-existent in the first place. I think the Japan government is a few years late on this one.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
the same people who probaby complain about how litigious our society is.
Closed AccountAug 7, 2010
Believe it or not, there are actually people that buy a product and keep it for the duration of its lifetime instead of paying the same company for a slight upgrade every year.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
have you had a battery problem? if you did, would you blame apple after 6 years? It's people like you that almost put cessna out of business because 50 years later people had problems and crashed planes and sued cessna.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

if the battery problem was "it catches fire", yeah, I'd have a problem with that. Cessna's can be regularly serviced to avoid falling out of the sky, but what can you actually do to maintain your ipod nano?
Closed AccountAug 7, 2010
Right here. It's been serving me well for five years and counting. No need to waste money on an upgrade when what I have works perfect for what I want.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
if it failed now would you want to be included in a class action suit against apple because of the battery?
uselesstriviaAug 7, 2010
I would absolutely still be using mine if I hadn't been given a Touch as a christmas gift. I wouldn't have bought it for myself. That first gen nano was an amazing little machine and it did its job perfectly. Other than being pretty tiny in terms of storage it's still 100% usable today.
Not everyone replaces their gadgets every 2 years.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
so 6 years later if it failed would you want to join a class action suit against apple?
uselesstriviaAug 8, 2010
I guess that depends. If it exploded in my hands due to a problem that was known but not publicized...maybe.
Just because it's "old" doesn't give it an excuse to be unsafe.
alohaitsajAug 7, 2010
Apple should already be doing this. You would think that it would create good press that they are willing to fix the problem. Kind of sad that the government has to order them to make it public that they are willing to protect their customers.
seltaeb4Aug 7, 2010
I see it as kind of cool that Japan's government has the authority to protect its citizens, and compel private companies to do what's right.
We could learn a lot from them here in America.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
because 5 or 6 years later 4 people had a problem? I see. Yes we sure could learn a lot.
alohaitsajAug 7, 2010
So true. I am kind of shocked that it is legal for them to do that though.
neotechniAug 7, 2010
Government makes the laws.
seltaeb4Aug 7, 2010
And in America, the corporations write them.
falldogAug 7, 2010
You know a company really cares about their customers when they keep them in the dark.
polarbearfireAug 7, 2010
Apple doesn't want to publicize because Steve Jobs was being literal when describing his products as "magical".
robdazombaAug 7, 2010
Gee, a negative story about Apple? On the front page? How did this happen?

Gee, another problem with Apple hardware they tried to keep quiet? How did this happen?

Wow. You could not be more of a fanboy. Didn't Toyota just go nearly bankrupt because of an issue they had with their cars?
It's a f**king music player. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Take some responsibility as a company and recall them so the faulty product that YOU MADE won't hurt people anymore.
It's the price of sticking your head in the f**king sand and going, "LA LA LA OTHER PEOPLE DO IT TOO". People only made a big deal about the iPhone because it took Apple nearly a month to even make a public statement about it, and when they did it was basically shirking any fault they had in the creation of their own product.

Some of us who digg up these articles are APPLE CUSTOMERS because we have a personal interest in compelling Apple to do the right thing.
I own apple products, but I will not defend them blindly. A) they are a company, and B) they are nowhere near perfect.
robdazombaAug 7, 2010
I am too and I agree with you, but for the last two months solid there has been nothing but negative stories about Apple on the front page of Digg. It gets tiresome, especially when not a single negative story about Google gets there. It's starting to feel like an Android/Google-fanboy-run site and that just sucks. I don't care what side of that sorry argument anyone takes, gaming the site is a good way to ruin it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Do all phones have this issue Steve?
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
6 diggs no downs for this comment that has nothing to do with phones. I'm starting to get the digg community.
pier2Aug 7, 2010
Now they need to make them publicize that new MagSafe power adapters aren't compatible with older Macbook Pro computers. It's true, you have to remove the battery and reset each time you want to charge them - and Apple is leaving us all hanging on a solution.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
The new adapter is an improvement and it's compatible with all macbooks and macbook pros.
pier2Aug 7, 2010
No it is not compatible. The Apple board is filled with people like me who have a 2-3 year old Macbook pro and the new adapter charges once then it won't charge again unless you remove the battery and do an SMC reset. It is a documented, repeatable, and widespread issue. Apple support has of yet been no help.
remingtonhAug 7, 2010
wow I got dugg down hard for that. I'm suprised. The white or black plastic ipod from 2004? you people are that attached to it? well I'm suprised, and impressed - and congrats - but why digg me down for asking an honest question?
Closed AccountAug 7, 2010
Anything "bad" happening to Apple is good in my book. Apple's apathy towards its customers should be well-known by this point, but people are too brainwashed to give a s**t.
hyperianAug 8, 2010
If this was the American government ordering Apple to publicize iPod fix. Man, you know the s**t storm that will surface?
