If you check out other browsers, they have the same problem.
Click the X in Chrome, Firefox and IE and they all close. Ours just works better because it looks better.

I honestly don't think that Apple got these test from their websites because they thought they where incorrect.
They still pretty much believe that every other phone has basically the same problem.
I think they got them offline because the public found these tests immature and frankly didn't believed the tests drew a correct picture.

I hate "mac people" and aside from that I'm not an expert on CPU architectures, but actually AFAIK yes PowerPC is still superior to x86. Certainly there must be some advantages considering that PowerPC is commonly used in game consoles.
x86 is a specification that's been hacked together over decades, constantly growing and with many overlapping features that render other features obsolete, but which programmers often aren't even aware of. As a result, more and more die space is wasted with each generation on things that can't be removed since they are relied upon by various obscure or poorly-written software. On the other hand, as a result of the broad feature set, it can be much easier (or even fun) as a development platform.
I don't know if PowerPC actually corrects any of these "problems", and I'm sure it has its own wide array of problems, but every modern home console must use it for a reason. Gamecube, Wii, 360, even the PS3's Cell uses PowerPC in some form or another according to Wikipedia.
As an aside, I'm not sure what could have convinced Apple to stop using PowerPC CPUs. Back then, they could at least still claim that they weren't just using the same off-the-shelf components and selling them for a 9000% profit to gullible douchebags.

As an Apple Mac owner and software developer even I will admit Apple has showed their true colours on this antenna controversy. If your product has defects you should admit up to them and move on. The a-hole thing to do is drag your competitors products into the issue, this is school-yard tactics. Those videos were totally out of order and I think they have probably realised this now hence the removal from website. Oh and showing a $100m facility that's used to test iPhone's yet the product is still demonstrably defective? All this shows is that you put the product out knowing it was faulty, obviously because Apple (or Steve) prioritised design over function. Just like in the 90's, Apple has gotten too big for its boots and the arrogance is showing.
mabakerbrakerAug 2, 2010
Their true colors? My, my, ain’t that a self professed mac expert here. Where have you been when he released the original mac in 1984 or when throughout the 90’s they’ve been blazing with the anti-Ms-propaganda ads?

jacksombraAug 3, 2010
Slagging off a competitor for being crap (and vista was crap)when you are not, while tacky is also reasonable as it can highlight why you have the better product/service
Slagging off competitors for being as crap (falsely) as you, just makes you look bad and childish
kedstar99Aug 3, 2010
It should not matter whether the competitor's product is good or not, should not be allowed. I do not see why they couldn't promote their own product instead of digging flaws in the competitor's product.

Either way, it was a wrong move by Apple (in a business sense) to do those videos of competitors' phones: put them up and consumers and rival companies are forced to be drawn into the argument further. Take them down and everyone will see Apple as wrong or weak - either because Apple indirectly admits there really is no comparison between the iPhone 4 antenna design and rivals' antenna designs, or that Apple backed down under threat of costly lawsuits that they believed they were likely to lose.
johnsawyercjsAug 5, 2010
Yes, it was an amateurish thing (at best) for Apple to create and post those videos, in an attempt to create a false equivalency.

gerrykAug 2, 2010
How exactly do other phones, where the antenna is NOT exposed, have the same problem. The problem is not antenna occlusion it is antenna detuning by capacitive coupling. When you cover the antenna of another phone, sure it will attenuate somewhat (a small what in my experience) whereas on the iPhone, you are completely changing the electrical characteristics of the antenna.
So, the 'everybody' you are referring to seems to be somewhat inaccurate.
robohitlerAug 2, 2010
I'm not wading in to defend anyone using the term "google drones", but as soon as Apple countered with the "other phones do this as well, look at this" press conference, suddenly the problem wasn't about gripping the antenna in general but very specifically about covering the black strip.
Unfortunately for people attempted that slight of hand, that's not what any of the actual tests (as opposed to the anecdotal "happens to me" "doesn't happen to me" posts littering comment threads here and elsewhere) such as Anandtech's found.
In any case, "capacitive coupling" applies regardless which point of the antenna you touch and it is always about changing the characteristics of the antenna. That is the only mechanism here - there are not two separate issues. The end of the antenna is a more sensitive place to touch but it is not a kill switch operating in some different way...if you look at other phones where the manual points at a specific place to avoid touching, that is exactly the same mechanism at work.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

@mabakerbraker
It's Apples and Oranges. Yes the other phones signal dropped when held, that was never really the question. The iPhone 4 signal drops when using a single finger (the fingare writes RIP Peter Sellers). This was just a bad design and while I don't think it warrants a recall, a redesign certainly isn't out of order.

Apple should have gracefully admitted their design was substandard, they messed up, and went back to the drawing board to create something out of this world next time around. I'd have respect for that.
Instead, they acted like a child on the playground, pulling everyone else in and clouding the issue.

upeneffAug 2, 2010
This was the same with all the dropped calls users with the 3G had, we didn't see them in Canada as much, so there are network advantages here, or more likely less users on a given network.
Also, Apple has through Software made it seem like less of a problem (and people are dumb enough to believe it really made a difference).
And any user who bought one here knew it was a problem… and we don't like to sue everyone and their mothers.

It's funny, really. In the 90's, 'Mac Zealots' were simply what we now call "trolls". They would purposefully over-exaggerate the importance and superiority of their product over other computers and naturally, geeks took the bait. Unfortunately, the new breed of 'Apple Fanboys' take this idea far too seriously and we get this surreal brand obsession and the big blame-anyone-but-Apple game.
Now in the 00's and the 10's, we're seeing non-Apple users trolling Apple fans and said fans taking the bait. Funny how that worked out, huh?

Before the iPhone came out, the debate used to be about the iPods in my personal experience. Every time I would post about preferring iRiver or iAudio music players on head-fi.org or dapreview.com, there would invariably be a few people accusing me of being poor and not being able to afford an iPod, even though the iAudio players sounded better, sometimes cost more and I'd use them with my Shure headphones instead of the s**tty white iPod earbuds that most iPod/iPhone users keep.
Fanboys of any type are just a f**king annoyance to deal with. They always lower the quality of online discussions and for that reason alone should be called out for the morons that they are or ignored completely regardless of which product you prefer.
amazingsteveAug 2, 2010

In real life, I've never met anyone who gave a f**k.
Didn't they make it clear that if your iPhone can't stop your tears from running down your face, you can take it back to where you bought it for a full refund?
People who bought a first generation phone are idiots.
The people whining, crying, moaning and pissing their pants over the whole thing are bigger idiots. Maybe just slightly but they're more annoying.
Read the comments on this page and see who the f**k is more annoying...the one or two posts defending Apple or the 60 posts from crying babies over the whole situation.
If it affects you, you HAVE a solution.
If it doesn't affect you, you're a crying f**king whiny baby.
The end.
Hope that clears up any confusion.
steamintmannAug 2, 2010
I was one of the idiots on the line at launch day, waiting for 4 hours to get my reserved phone. I only ran into the antenna issue if I already had bad coverage already (Kinda common, because it's AT&T). However, after 2 weeks (granted, without a case) I had 2 cracks on the front screen, without a "real" drop. I consider a real drop to be from at around thigh high. Also, I confirmed with multiple other iPhone 4 users another issue that isn't getting much play, the ear sensor is not configured right. Putting the phone on my shoulder without holding it in my hand, I could see the screen flickering on and off, turning on the speaker phone, accidentally activating and turning on the keypad, and adding calls to random people (kinda funny, but still unacceptable). I got a case, and screen protectors, etc. I realized that I had to treat the phone like it was made of glass (oh yeah, it is..but WHY?!) and decided that I had more important things I wanted worry about. I have since returned my iPhone 4, got a Droid X(Verizon! Hell yes!) and am not looking back. Form is supposed to follow function, and it seems that in this revision, the flipped the formula.
fuzzynyankoAug 2, 2010
Thigh high? I've had cheap phones dropped from head height onto Asphalt and survived.
richmomzAug 2, 2010
Same here - my blackjack took a dive out of my suit pocket when I was putting my jacket on in the parking lot; it went flying straight onto the pavement with no case. Result: the corner got chipped pretty good but otherwise survived intact.
firesightsAug 2, 2010
It helps when those "cheap phones" have 1.5 inch screens, versus a touch-display that encompasses most of the front face of the device.
bloodboilerAug 2, 2010
Dropped my Nokia N900 (big touchscreen, heavy and expensive) from waist height to asphalt. And not a tiniest mark to show anything had happened.
meccaydnaAug 2, 2010
This is why touchscreen phones used to come with little protrusions on the front. Look at the HTC magic (G2) there's a prosthesis lip on the top and bottom that's specifically designed to take the hit during drops. It saves the screen.
elmuerte17Aug 2, 2010
I used to work for a company that painted streetlights. I dropped my phone from the bucket at streetlight height; after finding where the battery had flown off to I put it back together and it worked fine. Dumb phone FTW.
casedotAug 3, 2010
I dropped my iphone from about knee high and it hit the tile floor right on one corner creating a large crack going across the screen. It didn't really bother me so I never fixed it. Since then I have dropped my phone so many times I cant even count, including kicking it when getting out of my car so hard I thought it had to have broken but it was fine.
I think once it breaks it has a little more give because the first time it broke it barely rattled on the floor, but it didn't break more when I really thrashed it. This was the iPhone 3g with no case.
johnomazzAug 2, 2010
I too got a DroidX and love it. I had an iPhone 2G from launch, and iPhone 3G and a 3GS. Frankly, none of them compare to the DroidX. I now refer to them as kindergarten phones.
rickpdxAug 2, 2010
Sorry to have to say this, but the new iPhone has real problems. I've had an iPhone since the first one and this is the only one that within 2 weeks had scratches, including a deep gouge, just from carrying it in my pocket. I've always kept it in one pocket with nothing else there (no keys, no change, no pen, nothing). The others did fine. This one gets big scratches. Worse, this one starts making random calls. I found once that it had dialed my accountant and I didn't see this until 18 minutes into the call when I pulled the phone from my pocket to make a call. This never happened before (and I always keep the screen locked). My spouse's iPhone is doing the same thing. Even turning off voice control for dialing doesn't stop this. What has Apple become?

The random calls problem sounds like maybe the proximity sensor problem that a lot of people are seeing. Apple says they're working on a software fix. Not sure why it's taking them so long.

You were able to return it with 2 cracks on the screen?
steamintmannAug 2, 2010
Yup. Either the guys @ the Apple Store didnt notice, or didnt care...

The videos never existed.
Also, we have never been at war with Eurasia.

Ministry of truth also declares that the iPhone is the only phone that has ever existed.

Big Jobs is watching you.

I'm sure there is an explanation. Something like ...competitor viewed videos of their product, promptly contacted the legal team and threatened more never ending lawsuits. Though Apple has money to fight they probably thought better to just drop the claim that everyone else sucks too.

Guess they realized that slandering other companies doesn't make their problem disappear. Oh, and dropping a bar or two is different then dropping a call completely. Frankly, I wouldn't doubt it if Apple faked the videos.

Several publications attempted to replicate Apple's deathgrip on the Droid X and they were unable to do it. The Droid X has an antenna at the top and bottom of the phone so you can't really significantly affect the signal by simply holding it. I got the phone's signal to drop 10 dBm but only by REALLY covering the hell out of the phone. I formed two cups with my hand and covered the top and bottom of the device. Dropping only 10 dBm with a hold like that is pretty impressive; the iPhone 4 drops 20-30 dBm simply by placing a finger on a specific spot.

The videos are now diamonds!

You can scrub the videos from your website Apple, but not from Digg's news feed. Those videos will be showing up here for, well, at least until a new Batman movie comes out, or Ron Paul runs for president again, or the Scientology get litigious again. I don't know... this story about a cell phone with crappy reception is all we got right now. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Hold it! This story is significant not because a cellular device has crappy reception, but because a magical device has crappy reception. Earth's supply of magic is diminishing due to overexploitation. Have we hit peak magic?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Would you people wipe your tears and have your mommy wipe your ass for you and move on?
Who gives a f**k about this s**t?
WASN'T it clearly stated that if you don't like your f**king iphone, take it back and get a refund?
"OMG...(whine, whine)... competitor videos, blah, blah, blah, whine, cry, whine...."
1. Don't like it, don't buy it.
2. Bought it, feel duped? Take the f**king thing back.
3. The only people who are keeping this going is the old crybaby guard of Digg.
Nobody else gives a f**k.
"OMG...you bought an ipod!?? LOL>>>fanboi!"
People act like you're in f**king 3rd grade. I could give a s**t less about Apple but I know that the one thing more annoying than the company is the rabid groups of crybabies who won't shut the f**k up about them.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
