That's great! Apple needs to take responsibility!
bigtime2Jul 1, 2010
Every company needs to take responsibility! (not an iPhone user)
ryan850Jul 1, 2010
Now can they sue Apple for making them look like douche bags?
ishiguroJul 1, 2010
I have to hold it in a ridiculous way in order to recreate the "problem"
kreatre2007Jul 2, 2010
It's stupid. No one that I know who has an iPhone 4 has had reception issues. For me, it's been flawless. This lawsuit is frivolous.

The fanboys are in enough of a rage that they'll digg up every article covering the lawsuit and ignore common sense regarding the matter.

Which raises the question: how pathetic must one be to be an *Android* fanboy?
They are only defined by their hatred of Apple, not because of the merits of Android.

Lawsuits? Really? Suck it up. Being an early adopter doesn't come without penalties. Next time wait a week or two.
willrsJul 1, 2010
this is the 4th iphone, and apple raved about how their "new" antenna design would improve call quality and reception. they deserve the lawsuit.
velnichJul 1, 2010
"deserve the lawsuit"?
No, they deserve poor sales #s and bad reviews.
shnowdoggieJul 2, 2010
BS. This country already has to many blood sucking lawyers. (Not saying that all are) If someone is not happy why not just return the phone? Or sell it at a higher price to someone else who wants it?
jeffduppJul 1, 2010
Or Apple could have just released a product without an obvious critical flaw
Closed AccountJul 1, 2010
This is the 4th freaking version of the iPhone. Apple got themselves into this mess when they chose form over function when they were doing the industrial design.
Sometimes it actually pays to listen to the engineers...
spiralspiritJul 1, 2010
there's a faulty product released and the company doesn't have the guts to issue a recall. Let them be sued.
hurrayforschoolJul 1, 2010
Major design flaws that emerge immediately after a product's release should be the fault of the company. The only people that should "wait a week or two" are the people who quality tested the phone that can't be held like a phone. Apple should at least respond by offering free cases, instead of acting like the problem lies with the consumers' method of holding it. (If you need more convincing just take a look at how the phone is held in their own commercials.)
velnichJul 1, 2010
@lots of tears
So, return the phone and buy a different one. There's other good phones out there.

djmphotoJul 1, 2010
I like the idea of holding apple responsible for their decisions, but I don't see this going anywhere. The only thing different that I can see from this antenna issue and every other antenna issue is the fact that you can easily identify where the problem is. There are enough examples on the web showing that a ton of other phones have the same issue, the iPhone 4 is just explicitly shown. I can't wait to see what design they come up with next year, I'm guessing a return to the old design, and they call it the iPhone Classic. Or better yet an iPhone completely made out of gorilla glass. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Right, so because it happens with other phones, it's ok. So because it's often the case that companies often rip off their customers by refusing to honor rebates elsewhere, we should let off any other company that engages in the same trickery?
s**tty logic.

The difference is that the iPhone has a lot more people complaining. One-off videos of Nokias and HTCs doesn't suggest a problem. Nokia make more phones than Apple, so if they were doing something wrong don't you think it'd be everywhere?
wolferzJul 1, 2010
when fanboyism is involved you can expect a disproportionately large reaction. In this cases there are three factors making the issue bigger than in other cases. Apple fan boys, Android fan boys, and the fact that when you hold the phone normally you get a reception problem
The last point is the most valid one... in most other cases you have to hold the phones in a way that is awkward to have a problem. But in this case normal use produces a problem... significantly increasing the likely hood users will experience it.
Unfortunately that is not the main reason this is being blow out of proportion... for that look to the fanboyism surrounding apple and its competitors.

Nokia phones in my few experience have always been rock solid. I'm not saying my experiences are representative of everyone else's, but even if their smartphones' touchscreen UI isn't the best out there, I'm pretty sure they don't get lawsuits on their arse or mass complaints for phones that constantly drop signals. Either they're covering up such incidents nicely, or they're actually doing about each incident in a manner that placates customers.
vizonJul 1, 2010
I'm sick of the "you bought the phone, return it!" comments. No, the phone is not working as advertised and Apple is not even releasing any official statement in regards of fixing it. All we have to go by are Job's one liners.
zipkoJul 1, 2010
I don't recall it ever being advertised as perfect. That's an image the consumer tagged to the device.
obitusxJul 1, 2010

vizonJul 1, 2010
The antenna should at least function properly when holding it. It's a damn phone.
velnichJul 1, 2010
Welcome to the retail industry, you must be new. In the event that you purchase something that doesn't work the way you expect it to, you can return it to the store within a period of time to exchange it for another unit. If it's discovered that all the units suffer from this same problem, then you decide whether you can put up with the problem or return it and buy a different model or brand.
A lawsuit is juvenile.

It's fixed by putting a cover over it. If anything, the only response Apple needs to take is giving out free sleeves for it.

nullcodesJul 1, 2010

Closed AccountJul 1, 2010
It certainly is a fix.
In the same way that Toyota can fix their pedal issues by placing a cover over it so that you can't ever press it.
zipkoJul 1, 2010
@ohreilly
a case for your phone doesn't make it unusable. And Toyota did respond to the break pedal issue by recommending people "put a cover on it". Their recommendation to the fault was to remove the floormat.
It's a simple problem with a simple solution. People are right to be upset about it, but it's not like Apple released an unusable phone. Suck it up, and if you're really that upset then don't ever buy another Apple product.
Closed AccountJul 1, 2010
Only a fanboy would basically say that a bit of rubber (that you have to buy at vast markup) is a *fix*. It isn't a fix, it's a workaround.
zipkoJul 1, 2010
I've never owned an apple product but I have used them every once in a while. I just find it amusing when people make mountains out of molehills. Apple would be smart to fix it quickly though.
BTW, if anyone's having trouble with their phones I saw that putting a piece of tape over the connection fixes it on the cheap.
pilot3033Jul 1, 2010
besides, most of the reviews I've read have been pretty positive: from both Apple loyalists and non-loyalists alike. "antenna issue? not that we've noticed, you need to hold it pretty specifically and TRY to get it to lose bars."

mabakerbrakerJul 1, 2010
Yeah, cuzz it’s f**king true. Just Android fanboiis want to keep raging about it cuzz their favorite plastic toys are warming the shelves of the Sprint and Verizon stores.
designetJul 1, 2010
not true....YES you're correct that all antennas are affected by holding the area directly around them, but that's the entire reason most people don't put them on the outside.
Since the days of the old retractable-aerials it was known that if you TOUCH the aerial in-call your signal dies...so it's a massively flawed design.
Many phones suffer from the loss of a bar...maybe two...if you hold the area directly around the antenna...putting it on the outside essentially has the potential to totally KILL the reception...as is happening here....becuase by touching it your body essentailly becomes part of the circuit, changing the size and shape of the antenna itself.
It's a design flaw and any prosecution lawyer worth his salt will be able to wipe the floor with that argument just with basic physics-101
itwasonlyajokeJul 1, 2010
What the heck. Steve said they just simply needed to hold it differently.

arizonaicedteaJul 1, 2010

designetJul 1, 2010
not unless it was released as a press release or a public statement from Apple.
It was seen as rumour that apple denied (and still do) , therefore it's apple's responsibility.
rrascoJul 1, 2010
the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese
adml_shakeJul 1, 2010
My whole problem with this, is that Apple sells their stuff as "premium equipment", so to me that should means that I should't have to go out and buy anything to fix a design flaw, they should just ship it to me. End of story. It's not exactly like they are hurting for money and can't afford it.
seltaeb4Jul 1, 2010
The deal is, there is no issue.
Bored journalists are always seeking something to fill their blogs. This is this week's entry.
wildJul 1, 2010
They may be able to fix the issue with software. Is tat is the case, why make an expensive decision to comp free accessories? I wouldn't expect Google to do it either.
wolferzJul 1, 2010
uhm from where i'm sitting there isn't a "deal". apple hasnt yet had time to fix the problem.
in the mean time the fanboys are being wipped into mouth frothing frenzy by each other and the media and its being made into a witch hunt .
apple will "fix" the issue just as they usually do... but now that its become such a big deal most wont see it what way. It will ether not be good enough or it will have taken too long or some other made up issue. Like it or not this is going to be a stain on apples rep no matter what they do at this point.
alexbarnes94Jul 1, 2010
Apple has said that they do not intend to fix the problem. I don't have the link available at the moment, but Steve Jobs told customers that they should "Just avoid holding it that way.", and then he released a notice to his retail stores telling them not to distribute free bumpers for any reason whatsoever. That doesn't sound like "apple will 'fix' the issue just as they usually do", nor does it even sound like "apple hasnt yet had time to fix the problem." They simply don't care, and they don't intend to spend any extra effort or time correcting the problem, since they could easily spend that time selling bumpers for $29, milking a few extra dollars out of the consumers.

When you advertise a product, it has to be correct to the understanding of 85% (yes I pulled that number out of the law where else) of people watching the commercial.
If we tried to make it so that every commercial was accurate to the understanding of 100% of the people watching it .. that would mean the disclaimer at the end of the ad would be twice as long as the ad itself. Not to mention businesses will lose money due to having to release boring ads and product announcements.

Probably going to get dugg down but, if you don't like the phone, don't buy it. Go get something else. Stop rushing out on the first day and buy Apple products. They usually come out unfinished and buggy. That statement goes for most companies these days. Testing can get expensive and they place too much concentration on getting the product out before anyone instead of perfecting it more. The only way you will get progress against companies like Apple is to stop buying thier products. If people continue to buy into the iPhone, Apple isn't going to change very easily. I agree that Apple should have done more in house testing but, buying the product then suing them because it sucks doesn't make much sense. Just don't buy it or return it for something else.
maxstaroJul 2, 2010
"relax... it is just a phone." as per Steve Jobs. LOL. Maybe being ill made him want to relax but to the buyers who expect a top notch product from Apple, it is unacceptable.
