Go Android!
parrappaAug 4, 2010
Why is this surprising? Android is an OS on just about every carrier with a wide array of phones to choose from. No s**t it's overtaken Apple. RIM is too businessy to be mainstream like Android as well, so nothing surprising there either.

The article suggests iPhone sales may be held back by the I-hate-AT&T factor. It would be interesting to see a comparison with Canada, where all the main networks carry the iPhone and everything else now. Is it true that AT&T charges extra for tethering? I would hate that! On the other hand, our data plans cost an arm and a leg so I guess it evens out.

There is no question that the AT&T factor has held back the iPhone. Apple would be looking at an unprecedented market share if they had released it for all networks. There would always be a market for android, it is just an overall better platform due to its openness. But it would have taken a lot longer for the little green robot to climb to the to the top if Apple hadn't made the questionable decision to be exclusive to AT&T.

You are right, the principle of open source is good but not every example is good. I believe both iOS and Android are extremely high quality, but I would go with android because it is open. Overall, I support the company that has a "Let's work together" attitude, whether it be through open software or open licensing for hardware.
However, I will admit that I am very biased. Apple has always bothered me.

If Apple moves to Verizon, the iPhone would be unstoppable. - so says an iPhone user.

Not only would they have to move to Verizon... they would have to diversify from the "one size fits all" form factor and try adding some devices with keyboards, larger/smaller screens to fit different tastes. Then they would need to go open source, and allow other manufacturers in on the development process... but will apple allow this? hell no, and that is the formula to their eventual demise...
