Wanna become Apple's largest competitor? There's 100,000 aps for that!
enantiodromiaAug 4, 2010
s/Apple/iPhone
the iPhone is a facet, not the entire rock. let's see how ChromeOS does.
sabinAug 4, 2010
OSX runs on ~8% of hardware while Chrom OS will run on 90%+, yes, let's see how this plays out.
enantiodromiaAug 4, 2010
jesus christ, all i said is lets wait and see. you people really need to calm the hell down. the only product wars exist in your heads.
how do you figure OS X only runs on ~8% of hardware? you need to decide if Macs are "just PCs" or "proprietary hardware".
OS X could run on 100% of the hardware, if Apple said "ok".
i also just don't see too many people wanting to run an entire OS in their browser. Google already has a creepy amount of info about its users, and them owning the OS on your laptop makes it even creepier. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
sabinAug 4, 2010
I'll digg up your reply but your original comment still looks something written by a childish apple fanboy. I find it odd that you would post something in one way, get a similarly worded reply and then basically ignore and even contradict the apparent stance you took in your original argument.
cyborg31Aug 4, 2010
I think you're the one that needs to calm the hell down. He's not the one writing paragraphs upon paragraphs worshiping a company every day.
enantiodromiaAug 4, 2010
I'm not worshiping any company, I'm pointing out irrationality every time a certain company's name is mentioned on Digg. It's just bloody ridiculous as this point.
I have purchased one Apple product in my entire life: an iPod Nano 3G. If that makes me a "fan boy" then Digg is truly broken beyond all repair.
I have a Droid. Does that make me a triple fanboy (Motorola, Google, Apple)?
Sabin, _all_ I said was "iPhone is not Apple's only product". If that looks to you like the words of a childish fanboy, then you really aren't prepared for a civil discussion about this topic.
Cyborg, it's so shocking that you would totally dodge the actual conversation and try to link comment frequency and length with "being wrong". Oh wait, it's not shocking, it's typical.
It's really quite fascinating how I need to wrap every normal comment in a Digg friendly politicaly correct filter these days as to not offend anyone, when the very same comments can be freely said at any random Silicon Valley social event without everyone turning into pathetic retards.
The only people I hear talking about Steve Jobs and Apple every day, are the same people who claim to hate these things so much.
Can you explain why so many people would talk about something so often that they hate so much?
Full Disclosure: I am a 'fanboy' of Amazon and Logitech. Go ahead and use that against me if you like.

Yet another example when quantity does not equal quality. Most of those apps are useless crap.
spacem00seAug 4, 2010
And so are the apps for the iPhone. So the playing field is pretty much leveled.
arcticrobotAug 4, 2010
couldn't agree more. Apps and "coolness" are strong selling point for both those platforms. I, just fyi, use phone equipped with desktop-like Maemo linux distribution with proper multitasking, root access out of the box, linux terminal with GNU core utils and other good stuff that I normally need a laptop for. Will never turn to closed environment of iPhone or VM on top of a crippled kernel of Android.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I just searched "fart" on the App Marketplace and I stopped counting at 325 apps... Just saying.

No, don't let the best phone win. Let 2-3 platforms remain in a competitive balance, and we all win.

Yeh right. How many iFart applications does the iPhone app store have? Both stores have plenty of crud.
I see what you are doing, when Apple has significantly more apps, it was all about numbers, now it's clear that won't be the case much longer, you have moved the focus elsewhere, numbers don't matter anymore...

same as iphone users used to belittle android for being behind with how many are sold. now that they are selling more than iphones we hear the "but, but, thats one phone vs many phones" excuse.
first off, theres been 4 iphone models, not 1. plus they were making these comparisons before android caught up, why the change? this is exactly the same as mac vs (windows) pc. one company makes the hardware and software, and the other just makes the operating system. exactly the same.
joaobAug 4, 2010
Are you crying?
wildAug 4, 2010
As someone with daily access to both app stores, I can say that there is a far better impression of quality on Apple's service. Whether that is actual quality or just how well the platforms present their stores I am not sure, but there is definitely a different feel in the apps themselves.
All the big numbers don't really matter, anyway. It is all about the quality of the apps you need. In that department, I am generally far happier with the quality on iOS. Android is kind of Nintendo-esque, in that the first party apps are incredible, but the third party is lots of shovelware.

Hmm, I guess the Apple market must be better, right? So far I have downloaded over 600 apps, and still I've yet to see any widgets like my friend has on his Droid. Oh...that's right Apple locks down any potential of the device to make sure nobody can improve upon the functionality of the device. (Jailbroken is where the iPhone really starts to shine...and even at that it is still a brushed aluminum compared to the functionality of what I have seen on the Android platform.)
The iPhone isn't all that great as a phone. (Standing within 100m of a tower, and only getting 3 f**king bars, and dropped calls...that's really a sign of a superior product.) And of the 600 apps I have downloaded (Oh yeah, and 90% of them are paid.) Only about 5% are even worth keeping, the rest are just a waste of 99cents-$9.99.
Apple is going to have a lot of catching up hardware wise in it's next generation phone, the iPhone 4 is already slower than the new Android handsets coming out. (Some are over the 1.0GHz and have all the features that the iPhone has...AND THEN SOME.)
Oh, and don't get at me for being an Android fanboy, I actually tried to like the iPhone and it was the best thing when I bought it...and the more I look at the grass on the other side of the fence, the more I like it. (An iPhone requires to be jailbroken to get a fraction of the functionality of Android, out of the box.)

the apple market is way more like capitalism as its the corporation in control.

deadpoetic333Aug 4, 2010
Are you s**tting me? Someone making the choices of what gets to the market is capitalism? An open market is socialism?
Let's call apps businesses in a market, for the sake of the argument. Android and Apple are two states with each their own system of economy. Apple decides what businesses are suited to be in their economy while Android lets (just about) any business enter their market and try to make it on their own. Which one sounds like a socialist state and which one sounds like they have a laissez faire economy?

I dig my G1, I love Android and I'm excited about the future of the platform, but let's not pretend the app quality compares with iPhone's... yet. I love the open platform, but really at some point Google should consider stepping in and saying "Ok, here's the thing: your wallpaper app is 1) redundant, 2) useless, and 3) f**king malicious."
dbetaAug 4, 2010
I don't think many people would be angry if they said ringtone and wallpaper apps aren't allowed anymore. The ringtone and wallpaper people could create an app to distribute their ringtones and wallpapers without having a different app for each one. I saw the same problem on my Palm Pre. Also throw in single book apps. Now that I have an android phone they are at least more hidden.
sindexAug 4, 2010
I'm not saying dismiss all wallpaper apps. But some amount of quality control would be nice so that they don't allow apps that mine your phone for data usage, email addresses, and text messages and send them to China.

Quality, not quantity. All the apps I'd care about are "coming soon" from the businesses that make them. That said, soon everyone will have/devel for both, and comparing the numbers will just be a count of fart and duplicate apps.
unxconformedAug 4, 2010
I think what is worth noting here is that since Android phones now are outnumbering and outselling iphones, developers are probably going to all start migrating to Android or at least publishing in both ecosystems.
Two points to consider:
1) if developers want to make the most money, they are going to release on the platform with the most users, or multiple platforms. Many developers originally avoided android because of the small user base.
2) since the approval process for Android is so much more relaxed, developers have to go through less hassle to get their apps published.
So all the really good apps that people claim don't exist on Android will likely be finding their way to Android soon since the market is better there. All these quality vs quantity arguments will become irrelevant very soon...
antialiasAug 4, 2010
While I agree with you that Android development will catch up it's a little ways off. First, they outsold iPhones for the 1 quarter. iPhones have been selling at that rate for 3 years now, plus there are a ton of iPod touches and iPads so it will be at least a year, maybe two of Android outselling the iPhone constantly before it surpasses the install base of iOS. Second, I've seen quite a few market studies that show the average iPhone user spends a lot more on apps than the average Android user (some said even 4-5x more). That would make iOS a better target for developers still. That said, I think they eventually will reach parity and I think it's great to have so many great options for smart phones.
unxconformedAug 4, 2010
You bring up some good points, I did neglect the ipod's from this. I wouldn't necessarily say there are a ton of ipads out there yet. I think estimates I've seen were little over 3 million which isn't much considering the phones top this every three weeks. It's important to note that android is already in numerous tablets, mp3 players and other hardware. If the phone market is any trend to be believed, the other markets are going to follow.
The studies about people's purchasing rate is a little skewed and not actually relevant. It wasn't until recently that Apple supported in app advertising to enable apps to be free but still generate revenue. Android has supported this for as long as I can remember. Many of the comparable apps that are free on Android but add supported are typically not free on iOS because no advertising system was in place. It's not a fair comparison to say iphone users buy more apps because it until recently that was the only way iOS apps could make money...
joaobAug 4, 2010
@unxconformed
"It's important to note that android is already in tablets..."
Really? You're going to make that argument?
darkstar3333Aug 4, 2010
Most corporate apps exist on both platforms.
The independent market is a bit different, realistically there is a best "(insert function) here".
The gaming market is where it has the greatest disparity mainly because the Droid market has emulators.
Closed AccountAug 4, 2010
While technically true there are more Android phones it's been a long time trend that Apple users are willing to shell out more cash up front for the hardware (obvious with the higher prices they charge -- that's another topic of discussion) and accessories for their products. Android has a lot of catching up to do in that department. The number of users doesn't equal the number of paying users. Put up your hand if you're willing to shell out over $20 for an Android app? Although there are not many in the Apple store either they do survive there.
unxconformedAug 4, 2010
I'm not sure what accessories have to do with apps and developers. But in any case if you are trying to say that iOS users will buy more apps, that probably isn't true. Android has always offered the ability for apps to generate revenue by advertising within the app. This enables the apps to be free but still generate revenue for the developer and for google. It wasn't until recently that iOS had this option, so all the developers that wanted to make money had to charge for their apps. All the statistics about iphone users buying more apps than android users is bogus for these very reasons.

"if you are trying to say that iOS users will buy more apps, that probably isn't true"
It is true. It is happening now. They are buying applications at a rate 5 times higher than the nearest competitor.
"Android has always offered the ability for apps to generate revenue by advertising"
That does not support your argument of iOS users not buying more apps. Developers want to sell applications. Not rely on an ad supported model.

wasn't it only at 70,000 a few weeks ago before the "app inventor" was released? numbers mean nothing, android needs developers, all the big labels are developing for the iPhone. http://bit.ly/cidCj2

Want crappy apps? There's 999,990 apps for that.
aquaosxAug 4, 2010
That's one way to view third party fixes for a crappy keyboard.
mrmephistoxAug 4, 2010
The key problem with the App space on Android is the fact that Google doesn't allow apps to run from the SD card still and that probably won't change till 3.0: most devices don't even have Froyo yet and some never will. It takes more effort to get an app that's scalable on Android and that makes for an inferior experience currently. Then too like others have said devs will naturally flock to where the most money is to be made.
Look up the iPhone games of the week on gamepro.com compare to the Android Market then talk.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Glad it works on 2.2 devices but look below for the CRUX of my argument. SD card installs are not backwards compatible and for an "open" system only a few devices can run FROYO and the rest are at the mercy of their wireless provider.
" running API Level 8 (Android 2.2) or greater. Existing applications that were built prior to API Level 8 will always install on the internal storage and cannot be moved to the external storage (even on devices with API Level 8). However, if your application is designed to support an API Level lower than 8, you can choose to support this feature for devices with API Level 8 or greater and still be compatible with devices using an API Level lower than 8."

"The key problem with the App space on Android is the fact that Google doesn't allow apps to run from the SD card still and that probably won't change till 3.0: "
Well it's too bad Froyo (2.2) supports "apps to sdcard" by default. Yeah, I'm running half of my apps off of my sdcard now.
mrmephistoxAug 4, 2010
And I'm happy for you but the millions of customers owners being counted in the tally of Android's so called majority do not have handsets capable of running 2.2 unless their carrier allows it.
Eris , Hero and other discontinued device owners locked into 2 year contracts after less than a year on the market will probably never have the functionality: right now they are the market majority. DROID can run FROYO but you have to ROOT to do so and users with that amount of technical skill probably aren't buying apps in the numbers that would turn a profit for a struggling developer and I'm not seeing too many devs even taking advantage and pushing the hardware yet. Why would they when they can probably make more money on the APP store?
roguecopAug 4, 2010
The iPhone is now a viable game platform, some have said it now surpasses the PSP. he Android platform requires serious retooling to make a viable gamers option. There are too man android phones out there and the majority of those just can't handle processor intensive apps like the Droid X or Samsung Galaxy might, that leaves developers with a situation regarding compatibility and the app market.
On the other hand iOS sees dozens of decent to excellent releases each week in the game space. The phone/pod/pad combination is becoming the defacto rpg/adventure platform as well for users on the go.
Android will do just fine with casual development of standard mobile apps, but don't expect much to stretch the hardware.
dbetaAug 4, 2010
The iPhone is getting the same issue with multiple hardware designs causing developers to have issues. The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4 have some huge hardware differences, and a game made for the iPhone 4 is not going to to work with iPhone 3g(at least not at a reasonable speed). All Apple and Android need to do is create a system so they can flag their application as needing certain minimum requirements before buying and the problem is pretty much solved. Like the iPhone, Android users upgrade every 2-3 years, so as time rolls on more and more people have these fully featured phones. All Google needs to do is let developers say "My app requires >=1Ghz, >=512mb RAM, >=500mb free space, and accelerometers of x accuracy." and let the Market automatically figure it out. Not really an issue. Playing with Google Earth and Sims on my new Galaxy S show me that this phone also has quite a bit of power and could do those fancy 3D games just like iPhone 4.

"The iPhone is now a viable game platform, some have said it now surpasses the PSP."
And those "some" are probably casual gamer Apple fanboys. The iPhone may be good for 5 minute diversions and casual games but it doesnt come anywhere close to a viable game platform compared to a dedicated gaming handheld.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Yeah, you're seriously misinformed:

I would link various Square games, but they are translating their entire library plus original titles. Final Fantasy Tactics due soon is supposed to be superior to the psp version. So Square Enix....EA, Rockstar(GTA:Chinatown better than psp), ATLUS, Activision, Disney, Big Fish, and so forth
Go here:

and visit the up-and-coming forums to see just how 'hardcore' the iPhone has become. There are even first person mmorpgs like WoW in development.

"The Android app Market may not be known for its rigorous testing procedures that Apple puts its apps through"
Wtf apple just accepts and declines apps at random without any testing everybody knows that or how else could a 15 year old boy put an tethering app in the app store!
enroniasAug 4, 2010
Yes but their game market is borderline useless, not nearly the quality of production or fun factor of those on the iOS. I have both phones and the telling fact of the app markets is I can't have the experience of finding a cool/fun app each day or just explore for fun downloads. On the android market it's oh look it's a picture jumble oh look a sound board, quality is few and far between.
gefahrAug 4, 2010
I agree (I own an iPad and an Android phone) about the market pollution and the lack of decent Android games.
But as far as exploring apps, check out Appbrain (.com and/or in the market - it's free)

Talk about a killer app.
spacebuddyAug 4, 2010
A lot of those apps are not secure and call home. Good Luck.

I actually just went through my iPhone apps, made a list, and looked up similar/matching Android apps. Surprisingly, most of the stuff I really use is already on Android. Yeah, I know the games won't be, but most of the functional stuff is:
Mint ----> Mint
Facebook ----> Facebook
IM+ ----> IM+, Nimbuzz, Meebo
Skype ----> Skype
WeatherBug ----> WeatherBug / Elite
DropBox ----> Dropbox
Air mouse ----> GMote
Qik ----> Qik

Still no great way to browse them. I use AppBrain, but it has a lot of flaws.
Anyone recommend anything better?

Android is the present and it would'nt be long before it gets into the past mode. Funny we were talking about it as the future just a couple of summers ago.
