This is going to be hideously expensive.
evil_doerAug 15, 2010
ati cards have been semi reasonable lately actually. lower than they have been for years.
groo68Aug 15, 2010
AMD does try to win on price, or did last time i checked.
chaosblade77Aug 15, 2010
Only when it's in their best interest, which is usually the case on the CPU side.
The 5850 could be at price parity with 1GB 460, maybe even lower, but AMD would rather try to rely on their good word of mouth they currently have. If Nvidia picks up enough steam thanks to the GF104, I wouldn't be surprised to see some quiet price drops from ATI.
Remember that the 5850/5870 are like 9 months old now, and they are just now reaching their original MSRPs. Prices went up early this year because demand was so high and Nvidia wasn't competitive.
And this is coming from a semi-AMD/ATI fanboy, but that's more of me disliking some of Nvidia and Intel's business practices, and AMD just hasn't given me good reason to dislike them yet.

juliusthecat - The HD5970 is $650-$700.
The $1000 card you're referring to is an off-spec model produced by Sapphire, a third party, which has 4GB of VRAM and a massive 3-fan cooler.

Hey I am right there with you. vman. Mobility Radeon HD is a waste of hardware. Ubuntu is just antisocial though..
countess666Aug 15, 2010
you might want too change that opinion.
ATI opened up their GPU specs and open source drivers are being developed as we speak. (they are still in development but you might want to try them if the official ones dont cut it for you)
nVidia refuses to follow suit and will only provide a binary blob type driver that only they have the power to update.

spire3660Aug 15, 2010
Just be happy you have a mobile GPU that ATI makes drivers for. I have an x600 in my dell D810. The most recent driver written for it was in 2005.
calcprogrammer1Aug 15, 2010
This isn't the case with newer chips/drivers, ATi now is pretty good with Linux support (the official Catalyst Linux drivers work well in Ubuntu but the open source drivers support many older chipsets, even newer ones like the X1 series).
Back in 2006 when I bought my X1600Pro (coming from a GeForce 4 MX that worked perfectly in Linux) I was unable to get even slight GPU acceleration because the ATi drivers were just that bad, they crashed the whole PC and nothing worked. However, the problems were fixed when AMD bought ATi and started producing better drivers and open specifications to help open-source drivers. I got an nVidia 8600M GS on my laptop 2 years ago because I didn't want to be plagued with a bad ATi experience again, but I just built a desktop with a Radeon HD 5870 and have had zero issues in Windows or Linux with driver support, it works great now.
vman81Aug 15, 2010
I hope so.
I guess I could see myself borrowing a machine to see how well it works.
jmiltonAug 15, 2010
I'm running Gentoo on my old 3850 with no problems. Hell, I've been running Gentoo for years on Ati with no problems. You should elaborate your problems on some Linux forums, you'd be amazed how much people there can be helpful.
beesknees21Aug 15, 2010
I'm a HUGE fan of ATI, I've purchased nothing but ATI hardware for years but vman81 is correct in stating that ATI driver support for linux is not very good. Running games, or trying to run graphics through WINE will usually show some problems or extra workarounds that have to be done in order to get the game to run properly... and sometimes certain games will only run with the Nvidia card.
There are a lot of discussions on this topic on the ubuntuforums.org if you go to the recurring topics under the community cafe.
Since I always just boot into windows anyway to game I can still use ATI hardware but if someone wanted to use linux full-time without any windows then I would unfortunately have to recommend Nvidia but that is the only time I will recommend them.
clippclopAug 15, 2010
as xorg-video-ati matures, you will be seeing a different trend in linux video card usage. nVidia will no longer dominate in the next year or so.
7ajiAug 16, 2010
In general, ATI writes s**tty drivers for their cards. Even when their hardware is better than Nvidia's, there will be some glitch with their drivers.

honoredmuleAug 15, 2010
out·dat·ed
adj.
Out-of-date; old-fashioned.
ob·so·lete
adj.
1. No longer in use: an obsolete word.
2. Outmoded in design, style, or construction: an obsolete locomotive.
The mere existence of newer and better hardware has no bearing whatsoever on whether your own machine is outdated or obsolete. Contrary to popular opinion, your computer is actually about as good as it was the day you bought it. And unlike penis envy, better computer hardware does not actually cause your own (computer) hardware to go flaccid.
So relax.
retralAug 15, 2010
As much as I hate being outdated in a month or so after buying a card, constant advancements is great. I only wish US ISPs would do the same thing.
I just bought an EVGA GTX 460 1GB SC EE - The 460s are awesome cards, but I think EVGA screwed the pooch with this design - they run hotter than pretty much every 460 out there. Also, my fan seems louder than average, and my chip is a bad bin (higher voltage from factory to keep the superclocked settings stable) - I'm going to return it for a Gigabyte 460.
calcprogrammer1Aug 15, 2010
All nVidia's GTX4 cards run fairly hot, it's just how Fermi was designed. A better cooler may help but in general you'll have high heat with those cards.
retralAug 16, 2010
Nah, typically, 460s run much cooler, even than the lowest GF100 core GTX 465.
Gigabyte 460s generally don't reach over 60c during max load; evga's heatsink is just designed to exhaust right out the back of the case (instead of filling it with all the hot gpu exhaust) at the cost of being louder/hotter than your average 460 heatsink.
tokeliAug 15, 2010
Wellp, now I'm glad I was forced to wait till November before I can buy new computer parts. Hopefully they'll drop the prices of current gen things before pulling out the new stuff!

lordsithisAug 15, 2010
Meh. My 5870 still rapes every game out there and until current existing consoles are replaced by the PS4/Xbox 720, there won't be a need to upgrade, because most multiplatform PC games are ported from 5 year old hardware.
Sorry that was the logical part of my brain commenting. Looks like I'll sell my Sapphire 5870 Vapour-X for a 6870.
ouberlordAug 15, 2010
Agreed. I spend about that much for my video cards when I upgrade and the last time I did so was a 4870. I imagine I'll either get something in the 6k series once they get released.
calcprogrammer1Aug 15, 2010
The 5870 will be outdated when the 6870 comes out, it just won't have a big impact because the 5870 will still run new games well and an update would be pointless. That doesn't make the 5870 not outdated. I have a 5870 too (awesome card) and I probably won't update until the HD7 series (which will move to a new fabrication process and be a large design change).
honoredmuleAug 15, 2010

"The delay led AMD to not only decide to make the new hardware using the existing 40nm process but to rebadge it from Northern Islands to Southern Islands."
This article is wrong on this, there still will be a Northern Islands, they are just releasing Southern Islands to have improvements to the 5000 line to combat Fermi. More than likely, if you already have a 5000 card, it wont be worth it to upgrade to the 6000s unless you needed to anyway.
calcprogrammer1Aug 15, 2010
I've heard Northern Islands will be the HD7K series cards which will move to a 28nm process and have a fairly large core redesign compared to the 6K. The HD6K is just the HD5K shaders stuck onto a newer core from what I've seen.
ricoduedAug 15, 2010
As much as I'd love to pick up a new graphics card, I've yet to play a game that really stresses my 4890. It still blows me away, but that's probably because my last graphics card was an nVidia 7600 GS >.<
johnomazzAug 15, 2010
LOL, I just got a 4870 a few weeks ago for $90 to play Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 when it comes out. I have been playing console games for a while now since I stopped playing PC games. The quality is just outstanding. My last card was an NVidia 8800GT.
goweigusAug 15, 2010
I'm running a vapor x 4890 on a 1920 x 1080 monitor and I have been for a little over a year, same thing as you (no games seem too much for this card yet)
Even the most demanding games don't get that fan to spin up enough for me to hear it except when its hot outside
resirothAug 15, 2010
Have you guys played bad company 2? That's literally the reason I upgraded from my gtx 260.
finalsightAug 15, 2010
I'm on a GTX 260 playing bad company 2 at 1920x1200.
All settings on low to keep my frames high enough to aim properly :-/
ricoduedAug 16, 2010
Yup. BC2 was the first game I bought after getting my card. It runs flawlessly at 1920x1080 with all settings maxed (I may have turned anti-aliasing down to like 4x).
The only thing that I've noticed that causes my card to sound like it's under full load is when I render something in 3ds max using Quicksilver (hardware renderer). The amount of work it's doing must be monumental when single-frame render times are like, 0.1-0.2 fps. God, a game that caused my 4890 to run at <1fps would be ridiculous looking. Mmmmm.
angelbunnyAug 15, 2010
I agree. I have a 9800 gt 1gig that I bought for $70 a while back and every game I throw at it with max settings and max resolution run fine. Sure, it isn't a $300 gfx card and I don't game much but is there really a reason to upgrade until you have a game that demands it?
renegadeafkAug 15, 2010
Hopefully these bring down the 5xxx card prices and I can grab a cheap 5850 :)
johnomazzAug 15, 2010
I just bought my 4870 too. Then again, its not like starcraft 2 is going to run any different when this card comes out.
ymegAug 15, 2010
How does the 4870 work with sc2?
ellipsysAug 15, 2010
For what its worth my 4870x2 (Which is a Crossfire-on-a-card option) runs it flawlessly at Ultra. I expect the same will be said of a 4870, possibly with less AA/AF.
ttebrocAug 16, 2010
My i7-720qm 5870 Mobile(laptop) runs it 1920 1200 ultra settings and I'm sure my 4870Vapor X desktop would to If I ever turned it on now days...
johnomazzAug 16, 2010
I run a single 4870 and have the settings maxed out in game as well as the Catalyst Control Panel. Press Control-Shift-R and you will see a frame rate monitor. I am consistently at 60fps.

jmiltonAug 15, 2010
If it's in 40nm, I don't expect any significant price drops, because the 6000 series will just replace the 5000 series production. Hopefully, Global Foundries will have 28nm working early next year so we might see some drastic improvements in price to performance ratio. On a side note, if ATi continues this aggressive roadmap of releasing new hardware, Nvidia will lose an entire production cycle leaving the consumers pretty much f**ked because of their arrogance and insisting on s**tty features like 3D and PhysX. I mean f**k PhysX; Nvidia disables SSE3 functions in favor of ancient x87 just to spite AMD and Intel and leaves the consumers to hack their drivers if they use both ATI and Nvidia cards. Sorry about the rant there, fellow Diggers. Nvidia ruined my multi-gpu enthusiasm.
goweigusAug 15, 2010

darkshroudAug 16, 2010
ATI won't price as low as they could if Nvidia doesn't have good products out. See the current prices of the 5800 series cards. The 5970s are a couple hundred dollars over launch MSRP because Nvidia has nothing that could take them out.
glintscollideAug 16, 2010
I've got a 295 and I've always been a bit biased towards Nvidia, but with the way this is going I will definitely be going AMD later down the road. They are just really slacking in general lately, they seem to be a step behind AMD at every release at this point.

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_physxgames_home.html
Yeah, that's a real extensive list that's reason enough to buy nvidia solely for physx. On top of that, unless your GPU is excessivly powerful anyway, physx is absolutely useless as you take such a large hit to FPS by using the physx engine.
Way to be a fanboy though.
kantenAug 15, 2010
That list is so old it's sad that Nvidia still links to it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhysX#Games
xenuxenutsAug 15, 2010
It's not a bad idea for the trend to start sooner than later. If amd had physx support, it would be wider supported. Eventually, most CPUs will have GPUs on them. At some point, non-gamers can use that for 3d, and gamers could use the on die gpu for physics with a separate card for graphics.
goffy59Aug 15, 2010
PhysX will die just like other technologies before it(anytime those video card manufactures try to push proprietary technology). Plus you can run it on ATI with a hack. Also, ATI is king when it comes to GP-GPU.
resirothAug 15, 2010
Or if you have a favorite game that isn't the latest and greatest, but still has good graphics, you can use physx to make it feel a bit nicer with your updated hardware. I'm surprised people are actually opposed to physx. Just don't enable it if you don't want it.
goffy59Aug 16, 2010
@Resiroth- the problem is that it isn't a good universal standard because its only officially supported on NVIDIA cards, thats why its a piece of s**t. At least Directx works on both cards. They need a much better standard that is supported on all software and all hardware like OpenGL which actually performs faster then DirectX in my experience.
aminy23Aug 16, 2010
I am not an Nvidia fanboy, but at least get your facts straight, PhysX uses the processor to do additional physics to make everything more accurate, so unless you have a decent dual core or better, than it should not result in a noticeable decrease in frame rate.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
darkshroudAug 16, 2010
PhysX is worthless but I would settle for Nvidia not blocking their own cards from hardware acceleration for the few games that do support it when an ATI card is detected present. The PC gaming market doesn't need a wedge driven in it.
bluesfanAug 15, 2010
Give us some games to take advantage of these cards, most games that come out are designed fro consoles or are ports.
goffy59Aug 15, 2010
I've had no such issues like you describe and mines only a 3870 x2. In fact, my card has out performed all my NVIDIA cards including the 8800. I can play any game that comes out. As far as I'm concerned NVIDIA is losing very badly because the ATI drivers are only getting better while NVIDIA is stuck in a rut kind of how AMD used to be awhile ago. It might take a few years for AMD to fully catch up with INTEL. Also, check out the bench marks of the ATI cards currently out. I used to not like ATI that much but ever since AMD bought them, they seem to have gotten their s**t together finally.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

combatchuckAug 16, 2010
Well, not half the price. But they're usually cheaper by 10 bucks. However, who ever said that having an Xbox and a PC are mutually exclusive? I have both, and there's no problem. In fact, they work pretty well together.
darkshroudAug 16, 2010
It depends on the company and where/how you buy the games. I rarely pay more than $40 for PC games. I usually buy them online, I haven't taken the Steam plunge yet but those are usually cheaper as well.
tsothaAug 16, 2010
You can get 'em for half price on Steam, but not for at least a few months after release. I'm not a console gamer, but I suspect if you're willing to wait you can get console games on ebay or from overstocked online retailers for half price too.
It's true PC games are cheaper on release day, but the difference is usually only $10 or $20.
lemonseamonkeyAug 16, 2010
I agree with combatchuck, I love having both. The console for fun co-op games to play with friends, and the pc for games with better pc support and especially those with a big modding community.

Also Adobe will be switching from Cuda to OpenCL for their hardware acceleration.
philbertAug 16, 2010
I don't play games on my computer, well I do with OnLive but video card has little effect on that. I don't know what Adobe plans to do but then I don't do much hard core stuff with Adobe products.
