Good stuff.
sublimeguideNov 13, 2010
In next version apple should include something really revolutionary like traveling through time .
agmlauncherNov 13, 2010
1. The user interface will still suck
2. It will still be slow and laggy on Windows
3. Basic music management will still be more complicated than it needs to be
4. It still won't update itself with small patches: it will require you to re-download the full thing every time.
5. iTunes store and App store organization will still be terrible
That's all I need to know about iTunes 10.1
shawnmattcrawNov 13, 2010
But you can disable Ping!
ajajadudeNov 14, 2010
I stopped using iTunes years ago because one update rendered it unusable on my computer. I couldn't play any music without serious issues with the sound quality so I figured why use a media player that won't work on my computer? I didn't own a Mac so I was about to go buy a whole new computer just to use one piece of Apple software.
shinelikeitdoesNov 14, 2010
what kind of moron is using windows anymore?
enantiodromiaNov 14, 2010
gamers, people's grandparents, people who are afraid to expand their horizons, etc.
agmlauncherNov 14, 2010
People who don't need a dumbed down fisher-price OS (unless you're talking about Linux, but since this is a thread about iTunes I have to assume you're talking about Mac OS which is for people who need their OS spoon fed to them since they don't know how to actually use a computer).
ljseinfeldNov 14, 2010
Yeah - I prefer to fight with my OS every step of the way. I enjoy the challenge as I have a black-belt in computer jiujitsu...
Here's a hint: If you think you're superior to someone because you use something that's harder to deal with to do simple day-to-day tasks, you're not only wrong - but also probably stupid.
agmlauncherNov 14, 2010
Who says I fight with my OS? Maybe I like customizing it to suit how I use it. Can you do that with Mac OS? Nope. You have to use it how APPLE wants you to use it just like you can't easily modify the sounds on the iPhone etc.
umdweiNov 14, 2010
I used to love customizing my OS too... but honestly, I rather have a computer that works well than to have Star Trek sound bytes play for every action that I do. (and I'm saying that as a Star Trek fan.)
These days, I use my computer to work instead of working on my computer.
ljseinfeldDec 29, 2010
Please give an example of this awesome customization.
beesknees21Nov 14, 2010
I tried to like iTunes but it really is a huge steaming POS. On windows there is a plethora of good music players that work well and are light weight. I was using foobar2000 until I switched to mac but nothing filled the void. Cog is kinda going in the right direction but it is unstable sometimes and the interface isn't very good. Songbird is getting kinda large and bloated for my tastes. So in the end I ended up installing wine through macports and installing foobar2000. Even under wine it beats the living piss out of iTunes for speed, reliability, and compatibility.

Oh! Super

ITunes is such a crappy piece of software!
suganindiaNov 14, 2010
call it CrapWare :)
zoomboyNov 13, 2010
How about they work on not making it 90MB! This thing has bloated substantially in size over the years, but I fail to see features worthy of a 50% size increase. Why the hell do I have to re-download it every time too? Can't this crap just be patched in?!

I just want iTunes to not be so slow and such a resource hog. Is that such a big demand?
TomHanks4Nov 13, 2010
1. It's still not as good as any one of several alternatives.
That's all you really need to know.
enantiodromiaNov 14, 2010
such as?
i have looked for something 'better' than iTunes for library management, playlist organization, and APIs into third party apps, and I have seen anything yet.
please, give me the short list.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

winamp, foobar, musicbee all > itunes
boulderbumNov 14, 2010
I know a lot of Diggers like to hate on Apple, but iTunes controls 70% of digital downloads and is the single largest music retailer in the US. If their software was all that crappy, they never would have reached such heights.
I used WinAmp for internet radio before and I wasn't really impressed. My impression is that it sort of has the same appeal that Linux has in that it's good for people who like to spend a lot of time messing with the software, downloading plug-ins, changing skins and whatever.
I sort of lean on the side of wanting software to install, then do what I want right out of the box without maintenance or additional effort.
iTunes fits that mold pretty well in addition to offering a robust media store, easy enough ability to play content, and smooth integration with Apple hardware (easy to sync iPhones, stream to Apple TV, play on remote speakers via Airport Express, etc.).
I think they'll hold a firm command on media players for some time to come, despite the naysayers.
crowdersoupNov 14, 2010
iTunes is popular because the leverage the popularity of the iPod. iPod's are great and all, but that doesn't make iTunes any better.
Also, my Andriod phone does everything that an iPod does and then some.
boulderbumNov 14, 2010
"iPod's are great and all, but that doesn't make iTunes any better."
I actually disagree. A key selling point of iTunes is ecosystem, which includes painless syncing of iPods/iPhones. You plug a device into your computer, and you're pretty much done. No dragging and dropping or overly complicated file management, it just sort of works.
A desktop music application, to me, is just part of a larger holistic media experience that eventually includes my TV and portable device.
I haven't tried tinkering with Android's media experience, however. Does it sync similarly with any music store? Is there one desktop application to manage apps, music and legally downloaded video in one place? For that matter, where do you get Android videos from?
I ask those questions not to argue, but because I'm genuinely curious.
enantiodromiaNov 14, 2010
WinAmp went downhill since AOL bought it.
The only thing good about WinAmp anymore are the Geiss eyecandy.
rogerisNov 13, 2010
It still plays music. It still syncs with my iPod. Everything else, good and bad, doesn't matter.
jshhmrNov 14, 2010
#1-5: It sucks, there are better and cheaper alternatives. Only mindless sheep that have no idea how to use technology to their advantage would use iTunes.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

iTunes is free? Sheep? You are original.
enantiodromiaNov 14, 2010
that's funny...
last house party i was at was filled with sysadmins, network engineers, and software engineers, and the DJ stand was a Vestax mixer, a couple of Pioneer CDJs, and a Macbook Pro, using Bonjour over the wireless network so that anyone who had an iPhone or iPad could add their favorite tracks to the dynamic playlist while DJay for OS X automixed everything on the fly.

is it possible that maybe you are the one who hasn't stayed current with technology?

enantiodromiaNov 14, 2010
If you want something which is just an MP3 player, sort of what WinAmp 3 was, for OS X, try "Vox".
It's small, efficient, not a resource hog, and has some nice unique features.
