Some designs are timeless. Take the marquee tag and "drippingblood.gif" for example...

OMG #4, that looks like the ads from old comic books. Let me check and see if you can buy some X-ray glasses or Sea Monkeys on that site.

Maybe they are selling some coded rings, too. I have to take a quick look.

Yahoo should be on here, but "face-numbing" wouldn't be adequate then.

Chicagonow.com missed their own site. It was real pain to watch those pictures.
yacksJul 30, 2010
Actually for having 50 slides, chicagonow.com did it in a good way.. they didn't reload the entire page after each slide..

Honestly, while being an older design, 3 and 50 weren't that bad.
I wouldn't call them 'face-numbing'.
lucyimhomeJul 29, 2010
Tripod is bad too.
And last time I checked, their free hosting didn't have any lockout on login attempts. So you can easily brute those sites using ftp server and the ~directory as username. But it would be difficult to deface them.

reload the page, it seems to randomly place different crap all over the page. I think there's more to that page than just a crappy web design.

Heh this is what ALL websites used to look like. Just use archive.org to look up things like cocacola.com and even Adobe.com. They are chock full of bad clip art, and hideous layouts.

Many bad websites fall into one of these three categories:
1. Websites made by teachers/professors who, back in 1999, wanted to be hip by making a website for their students to check out. Maybe updated three times since then.
2. Religious fanatics who probably couldn't get anybody else to make the page for them (not that they'd trust anyone outside of their little groups...)
3. Small business owners who hired their nephew or niece to make their site.

They need to put the Navy's recruitment site on there. I had to help someone log into that thing, and basically had to load up Windows 2000 in a virtual machine in order to use Internet Explorer 5 so that we could use it

Has anyone tried to understand this timecube.com stuff?
I think this guy's on to something...
fungowskiJul 29, 2010
i think arngren.net is intentional. I find something kinda charming about it actually. Like a website equivalent of those pages at the back of Popular Science and Hustler.
andoruJul 30, 2010
I've been to the physical store of msy.com.au.
They pride themselves on their total lack of service. If you come to their store without knowing the EXACT name, model and part number of the item you want to purchase, then you are basically told to get lost. If you ask what items they have in a certain range, they tell you it's YOUR responsibility to know this before you come into the store, and they won't tell you. They couldn't even let me see a printout of their current price list, apparently I was meant to do this at home off their website before I set foot in the store. If you ask a question about an item, they tell you that they don't answer questions about items, only sell them.
All this, and they know customers will come back for the cheap prices anyway.

#24 wasn't too bad.

As a web developer, I've said this to many clients whom I've taken over developing a website for who started with saving word docs as HTML or having someone use FrontPage templates: "If you can't afford to have someone set up WordPress with a decent theme on a low cost shared hosting account, fit you with Google Analytics, and hand you the keys... you shouldn't be playing on the Internet."
Because seriously, if you think that someone doing web dev for you for free and creating something like these 50, you should just fold your business now and save the embarrassment. I took over dev for one small business, when I was done and he really liked the site I set up (and his customers did too), I gave him a present: a metal waste basket, the last few ounces of gasoline in a gas can, a lighter, and the last CD-R with his original files on it. He was happy to watch the disk melt into oblivion, and learned never let his wife dev a website for him.
