I've been telling people this for a while but I guess I'm not as convincing as a giant corporations marketing team.

How could you be "telling people this for a while" The ITU only defined it a few days ago?

I thought it was common knowledge that to be a 4G technology that speeds had to meet or exceed 100mbps which neither WiMAX or LTE can do currently. Also, 4G would encompass both voice and data service. Currently all the networks haven't figured out how they are going to deliver voice over 4G just yet so they are keeping voice in the 3G and 2G technology.
So I'm with Metz. Even if you take the speed aspect out, the fact that the carriers are still doing voice over 3G and 2G technologies and only using their data services under "4G" automatically means they don't meet any standard that would potientially be for a real 4G technology...and I've been saying that for a while.

whoever submitted this garbage should be pummeled. Damn, my comment is longer than the article.

What's worse is that T-Mobile is caliming the HSPA+ is 4G. IT's not even a new technology, just a speed bump on their existing 3G technology. They're just trying to keep up with Sprint and Verizon's marketing.
I think AT&T is the last one to roll out next gen data technology, yet again. They haven't even finished their 3G network yet and 4G is on it's way. Why would anyone ever choose AT&T?

Well that proves the ignorance of Americans. T-Mobile's HSPA+ is faster than Sprint's "First 4G Network" Wimax so they have to market it a way Americans can understand. The nice thing about the HSPA+ on T-Mobile's network is that T-mobile is cheaper, HSPA+ is more widespread than Wimax, and gets 10Mmps real world speeds compared to Sprints 6Mbps. T-Mobile is the place to go. It's a shame T-Mobile's network uses a different frequency from the worldwide standard. It'd be nice to use the iPhone 4 on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network (iPhone 4 is HSPA+ certified).

Does the iPhone actually achieve HSPA+ speeds or is it just compatible such that it will run on a HSPA+ network. Last time I checked T-Mobile's 3G foot print was smaller than Sprint's and even AT&T's. Who cares about "4G" when in many places T-Mobile doesn't even have 3G?
chrisvazquez1Oct 25, 2010
Well if it is HSPA+ compatible it should be theoretically capable of achieving 21mbps speeds. Canada is already using the iPhone in that manner. Actually T-Mobile's 3G footprint is pretty big now. The nice thing is that HSPA+ is more widespread than Sprint's 4G so you're more likely to get higher speeds. I don't understand why T-Mobile has such a bad rep. It has been the best telecommunications company I have ever dealt with. Maybe it's because I never leave the Southwest U.S. but I usually have better reception than Verizon or AT&T customers.

I'm on Sprint because I wanted the Palm Pre. I get an awesome data package with all the bells and whistle's included for $70/month before taxes, fees and insurance. T-Mobile is the only carrier that comes close to being cost competitive with Sprint. I would love to be a T-Mobile customer since they seem to have a reputation for being the least evil of the big 4. If they ever get a Palm webOS phone I'll seriously consider them.

I'd say go Android and go for the G2. I'm a big Apple fanboi but I can't get past the AT&T part. I don't want to unnecessarily pay $50 more for the same thing, probably worse service. On T-Mobile, if you provide your own phone, you can get the same plan for $65. With that said don't switch over if your area has bad T-Mobile service. I'm exceptionally happy with T-Mobile because I have GREAT service from California to Texas and even in Tijuana but if you don't have good service don't switch. Sprint service is horrible here and I need a GSM phone because I travel to Mexico often.

I don't think anyone really gives s**t what it's called or what tech it uses. They just want mega fast wireless internet EVERYWHERE at a reasonable cost.
