pcmag.com— If you're buying a new smartphone, you'll need to choose a type of data network. We explain 3G and 4G in simple terms.

I'd be interested in the science behind the same 5 gig data plan caps though. More speed should equate to a bigger cap like it seems to with cable Internet.
4G is seldom 10x faster than 3G. All of the speed you read about here is capability, not actual readings. Server access and line congestion still determine the speed. I have the latest Galaxy Nexus with 4G and its usually "about" the same speed as 3G, sometimes 2-5x faster. However I try to use my home WIFI as much as possible, hitting speeds up to 45mips on the phone
I can get some pretty consistent real world speeds that are very fast. faster than my schools N wifi connection definitely. Here's one of my quicker speed tests: http://www.speedtest.net/android/89907784.png
I can pretty consistently get over 20mbps down on 4G with verizon droid bionic
Also I got verizon's deal with doubling data to 4gb so they sorta did give a higher data cap for 4G for a little while.
A 16 Mbps connection will hit a 5 gig cap in 42 minutes. Which is pretty pathetic. I'd be much happier with a 2-3 Mbps connection that I could use in a truly unlimited fashion rather than the faster speeds and caps.
LOL.... if there is a cap, it doesn't matter how fast you hit it. You are still receiving the same amount of data you are requesting on your phone. Hence that is a horrible reason to get a slower technology.
Sad thing is, you're always taking a chance. They don't really let you test it out and even if you do and plan to go through the hassle of canceling/refunding, how do you know if it's good enough wherever you might go. All a chance, nothing is guaranteed. All you have to rely on is rhetoric and non-specific coverage maps or reviews.
Country is just so big, you have to rely on independent reviews and recommendations.

I have the 4g Samsung galaxy skyrocket 2. But honestly it doesn't make a difference to me because where I live we don't even have 3g I think what we have is called edge.
The speed sounds great but how much does signal strength play into it? I barely get a 3g signal living a couple of miles away from downtown san antonio. They make no mention of its consistency or reliability.
4G varies from phone to phone, place to place, time of day, facing direction. I just use WiFi and i am happy, on the road 3g is all you need. Believe me with 4G dropping from place to place especially when you are on youtube in a moving vehicle.
Personally I will stay with 3G for as long as I can. I have seen the not so faster 4G based phones as well as how bad their battery life is. I have also seen the difference where you are stand has to 3G with some places cranking out smooth fast web pages and other times taking a whole minute to download the same page. Way to much marketing and false adds not enough real standard or technical reality.
Wasn't the original definition of "3G" supposed to carry somewhere around 1 gigabit/sec until the telecommunication companies took it and was all "Hey, we need this. To hell with your definition. We'll just give 10 megabits".

4G is about 10X faster than 3G. No rocket science here.

that's a monster speed, good stuff. I don't even get a 7 upload on my wifi

They should use the only terms that matter, real World throughput:
4G LTE looks to be 15-22 Mbps
3G looks to be 1-4 Mbps.

with the state of the current cell phone market all that means is that with 4g LTE you'll get throttled much faster.

Reading is fundamental, I said I'd be happy to trade the higher speeds for "truly unlimited" 2-3 Mbps access.

I think the salient point again is the great thing about standards is there are so many of them.
footbag01Feb 25, 2012
The only sentence that matters...
FTA - "There are so many technologies called "4G," and so many ways to implement them, that the term is almost meaningless"

Also
2.5G (GPRS)
2.75G (EDGE)
craig1958Feb 24, 2012
They are marketing terms, and therefore meaningless.

Wrong. I don't need to entertain this anymore.

Uhhh...it depends on where your service is being provided from.
I hate it when things get compared from different areas.

I have an HTC Thunderbolt, but I typically have 4G turned off and just use 3G to save battery life.

will i-phone have a 4G phone in the next 3-5 months?
craig1958Feb 25, 2012
I doubt it, there isn't enough LTE network available yet.
Of course, the AT&T iPhone 4S uses HSPA+ (which some phones already call 4G). Remember that the term 4G is nothing more than a marketing name.
