I can't say that I'm shocked. I'm one of the customers who came to AT&T for the iPhone. It's been a love/hate relationship from the get-go.
I'm considering moving from AT&T myself, although it won't be in regards to the iPhone. I've switched to Android and I love it.
hackiewackieAug 14, 2010
" I've switched to Android and I love it."
This!
gtlukeAug 14, 2010
what android phone are you using on at&t? the offerings are pretty slim.
badqatAug 14, 2010
Samsung Captivate. Rooted, side-loading enabled, overclocked.
johnomazzAug 14, 2010
The new Galaxy S looks pretty good.
neotechniAug 14, 2010
Can't say that I'm shocked either, look at how AT&T locked out features like MMS and tethering for the longest time.
spacem00seAug 14, 2010
No doubt, whether you go iPhone or Android. AT&T or Verizon arnt the best carriers to go with and will lock out features. Go with Sprint or T-Mobile.
I have never had a problem with service or billing with T-Mobile.
johnomazzAug 14, 2010
I considered them, Sprint's service in my area is dismal. TMobile isn't much better.
therednewtAug 14, 2010
Yeah, the problem with the two smaller carriers is usually geographic. They simply don't have the same level of coverage in some areas that AT&T and Verizon have. It makes it pretty difficult to have a discussion about the carriers on a national level because what matters most is who works best where you are.
york2600Aug 14, 2010
TMobile is just ATT with even worse coverage. Why would you want to go that route. As a note I've had both. TMobile is garbage
elranzerAug 15, 2010
Verizon doesn't lock out features (anymore). And don't pretend that Sprint doesn't... they've disabled WiFi in many of their phones.
abxbxAug 14, 2010
It's totally worth it. Moved to Verizon from AT&T - loving it.

You mean THAT obsolete verizon which does not support GSM nor SIM cards? The whole f**king world is using GSM!
beccabobAug 14, 2010
One thing that a lot of people are not aware of is that even though GSM is great for transportabilty between carriers, the call quality. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/gsm-vs-cdma.html This is not an authoritative source, but does list the differences.
Think of it as BetaMax vs VHS. BetaMax had better picture quaility always, and better sound first, but it was not the most popular.
GSM is great, especially in Europe for being able to use a SIM card and switch carriers. However, in terms of what a phone is used for by a lot of people, making calls, CDMA actually comes out ahead. It's main limitation is you cannot use data and voice at the same time.
rushdoAug 15, 2010
Broad adoption ≠ superior technology
Case and point:
http://gearor.com/hacker-intercepts-phone-calls-with-homebuilt-1500-imsi-catcher-claims-gsm-is-beyond-repair/6462/
elranzerAug 15, 2010
Well.... Japan, Korea and parts of China use CDMA. Are you gonna tell me they're more behind in technology than Europe?
slyzxxAug 14, 2010
As soon as my contract ends in January with AT&T i`ll move to verizon and get the Droid X.
khastAug 14, 2010
Great phone, makes the iPhone 4 feel like a children's toy in comparison by features.
No offense Apple fanboys, but Apple is being left in the dust in the battle they wanted to get into. If it's "simplicity" and aesthetic appearance go for an iPhone...if it is raw power and freedom to use the device how you want, Android all the way.
joaobAug 14, 2010
Get a life.
jeffdabeatAug 14, 2010
Thing is...I don't think Apple cares. As long as consumers (not nerds) think the iPhone is the end all be all, Apple will continue to make money...which is really the bottom line. When it comes to corporate America, you have to stop thinking like a nerd and think what is going to make your company the most money...
johnomazzAug 14, 2010
Dude, you took the words out of my mouth. I sold my iPhone for the DroidX. I call it a kindergarten phone now. My wife hates it, she still has one.
chaosdeiAug 14, 2010
How?
whatthefuAug 15, 2010
I'd say the HTC Incredible is better than the Droid X, but then they're pretty much the same phone.
attolAug 15, 2010
I'm extremely happy with my iPhone 4. It does internet, phone, games, music, and email extremely well. Its extremely fast to operate and even easier to navigate.
Something that has always bugged me with Android phones is how bad their music player is and how bad the sound coming out of the headphone jack is. Using half decent in ear monitors, it's a night and day difference when it comes to sound quality.
rushdoAug 15, 2010
"The iPhone isn't about being simple or looking good..."
I'm sure if you look hard enough there is a Steve Jobs quote that says exactly the opposite haha
@whatthefu Neither phone is by any means a junker... Battery is better on the X in my experience but the Incredible is definitely feels faster
khastAug 15, 2010
@Attol
At least if you don't like the music player in Android, you can always install another. With the iPhone what you see is what you get. (Can't duplicate core functions...as if Apple is terrified that someone might actually be able to do something better than they can...)
elranzerAug 15, 2010
The Droid X is more powerful and has a bigger screen than the EVO 4G, let alone the HTC Incredible. How is the Incredible the same (or better) than the Droid X again?
attolAug 15, 2010
@Khast
The only time I'd actually need to replace something is that it's been done badly. The iPhone has one of the most well executed music players in the mobile market. Also, half the problem with the Android phones is the bad sound quality, which is a hardware issue.
Same deal goes for the iPhone Safari browser. I don't feel the need to replace it because it works well.
slyzxxAug 15, 2010
Droid X has more than HTC incredible, more storage, bigger screen, bigger resolution, HDMI output, longer standby time and tethering are just a few features.
For what i`m paying in monthly bills, i would be paying the same with Verizon which would be 80 bucks a month like AT%T but i`d have more, unlimited calling, more texting and not go over and pay 120, 130 bucks. I have 1500 min call, 200 text and i go over with my monthly bill its soo annoying.
khastAug 15, 2010
@Attol
The point is, on an Android platform IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU CAN CHANGE IT WITHOUT GOOGLE'S BLESSING.
And the iPhone (at least the 3Gs) has really s**tty audio hardware. I listen to music all day at work, and though the iPhone headphones don't need to be OEM to work, the headphones I have sound crystal clear off my Sony Walkman, but the iPhone, even with EQ turned on sounds dull and lifeless (and eats battery life like crazy) Side by side, same song the DroidX sounds much better than the iPhone 3Gs using the built in speaker, it's louder, and less crackly. (Mind you, same MP3 file, and BOTH being played at the highest volume level.)
I've had my iPhone for over a year now...and I am ready to change over to an Android phone. After all, update 4.0 made it so I couldn't use my phone from home, or at work due to their improved handling of the reception in the base band. (Thanks Steve?)
abxbxAug 14, 2010
I've jumped around on contracts on phones. There's usually a way to get out of paying the cancellation fee. (Especially if you've been a customer for years with one provider) I've done it twice.
Last time though, coughing up the 100 bucks I owed AT&T to get out of it was worth it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
greengooAug 14, 2010
I got a Droid X on release... and I fracking love it. I do recommend you hold it first though, unless you have ginormous hands like me, you might find it a trifle large. For me, it's perfect in both form and function.
phillaholicAug 15, 2010
Your not going to want a Droid X by January. There will be another half dozen better Android phones out by then.
GreenBizAug 14, 2010

eddiepotatoAug 14, 2010
Another artificial dichotomy among many:
- Democrats Vs. Republicans
- BofA Vs. Wells Fargo
- ATT Vs. Verizon
People stay with one until they are "fed up", then jump to the other on in protest, not realizing their getting the same sh*t under a different name.
ghostalkerAug 14, 2010
Almost like we need some kinda 3rd party to solve all our problems.... naaaa, nevermind.
dxs2104Aug 15, 2010
Im struggling with Comcast Vs. Verizon for internet right now.
Comcast is pissing me off and makes me want to switch just to say you suck, but at the same time I know ill be just as pissed off at Verizon.
I have never heard anyone I know say "Yeah, I'm happy with my ISP". Same goes with cell phone carriers.
thalassicusAug 16, 2010
@dxs2104
I dumped Time Warner Cable for Verizon FIOS a year ago here in NYC and I am VERY happy with my 25GBup/25GBdown pipe. I also love that all my DVRs are network connected so I can set and modify them from my iPhone.
I'll look at switching to Verizon if a new iPhone shows up there to maybe take advantage of bundle pricing, but unless it's also got GSM so I can use it overseas (this is doubtful, I know), I can't see myself giving up the ability to use it everywhere. The iPhone really is a great phone for navigating unknown cities.
rettocsAug 16, 2010
@dxs I am happy with my ISP, Cox Communications.
jordantneffAug 14, 2010
Honestly I switched from Verizon to AT&T and I've been pretty happy. I hated verizon, they installed proprietary software on all of their non-smartphones that often limited the use of the phones capabilities. Also I actually get better reception. I used to get no service in my basement and I had to walk all the way up my driveway to call someone, but now I get 1 or 2 bars which at least means I'll get incoming calls and be able to send and receive texts. I think people really just hate on AT&T because of their partnership with apple, and it's cool to hate on apple because they're the devil! haha
alienhairballAug 14, 2010
Honestly I get fantastic service with AT&T. I know it's all about where you live/work when it comes to quality of service. Years ago I was with Verizon and when I moved into my current house I got maybe 1 bar with Verizon and nothing in the basement. Switched to AT&T and I get 4 bars in the basement. 3 bars where I work. I think AT&T is a bit overpriced at this point compared to T-Mobile and Sprint. I think AT&T has started to really lock down phones the way Verizon used to. I think AT&T doesn't have the phone selection of the competition.
I will likely be leaving AT&T when my contract is done this fall, but it isn't because of the service itself.
thejokkerAug 14, 2010
The fact that i can't do voice/data at the same time on Verizon still bothers me. I end up looking up something on the web while on the phone, and that cant happen on verizon.
badqatAug 14, 2010
Well, that is one of the disadvantages of CDMA. Verizon will be rolling out LTE very soon, which will mitigate this problem.
Also, aren't there Verizon phones that allow for voice communication via their network, and data via wi-fi?
s201Aug 14, 2010
Yes there are. The original Droid (I would assume other Android phones as well) allows voice via cell network and data via wifi simultaneously.
buckygradAug 14, 2010
It can if you are on WiFi. AT&T leaves that part out.
elranzerAug 15, 2010
I blame Luke Wilson.
ehauganAug 16, 2010
@buckygrad - Ummmmm, no
thejokkerAug 15, 2010
I know they have phones that can do wifi and voice, but thats not the same as voice/data. If I'm out using my cell phone on the road I have to switch between one and the other (i assume, I'm on ATT right now). That's actually been the biggest reason I haven't been interested in switching to Verizon.
Also, I have a blackberry work cell and it gets horrible reception in my apt (1 bar or none) but our 2 ATT phones do fine. Signal is relative in any location, but that's a big dealbreaker too.
thoughtsonthisAug 14, 2010
If I were with AT&T I'd switch to Verizon. I am with Verizon and looking at the Droid now.

alohaitsajAug 14, 2010
I don't think people are going to be that impressed by the coverage/quality of service from Verizon. I definitely wouldn't ditch AT&T to go back to Verizon, that's for sure.
magus824Aug 14, 2010
1 in 5 blogs like to guess.
robdazombaAug 14, 2010
Talk about burying the lead. I think the most remarkable stat from this entire story is the fact that 51% of current Verizon customers, who have access to some of the better Android-based phones, say they are likely to buy an iPhone if it comes to Verizon.
That's astonishing. There are literally millions of potential customers sitting right there, waiting to give Apple their money. If Apple doesn't make a move on that soon, they deserve to get their asses handed to them.
stubearAug 14, 2010
It's not entirely up to Apple. Remember, Apple initially offered the iPhone to Verizon and they required a lot of restricted setting that made the iPhone next to useless. While the iPhone has since proven itself, Verizon has Droid phones now and they are in a stronger position to negotiate the similar terms and restrict the iPhone once again.
robdazombaAug 14, 2010
Or maybe the success of the iPhone has taught Verizon the error of their ways and they're now willing to capitulate to Apple's way of doing things. Do you seriously think if Verizon could go back in time, they wouldn't have jumped on the iPhone?
And I'm sure Verizon's marketing folks are aware of these stats. They're not going to try to play hardball with Apple when they know millions of potential customers are sitting there waiting to buy.
stubearAug 15, 2010
A few months ago I would have agreed with you completely. Verizon probably was kicking themselves in the ass for letting the iPhone get away. With the Droid phones becoming popular and the lack of s company forcing Verizon to any real terms, I truly believe they think they can take on the iPhone, Steve Jobs be damned.
johnomazzAug 14, 2010
And how many of these verizon users have used an iPhone for an extended period of time. I bet most have seen their friends iPhones and not much more. If they have an Android phone and go to an iPhone, i'm getting many will be unhappy with the iPhone.
robdazombaAug 14, 2010
What difference does it make why they want an iPhone. The point is, they do.
Go find that consumer study that ChangeWave released last month. About a quarter of current Android phone users are looking to jump to the iPhone for their next phone. Only 6% of iPhone owners are looking to go to Android. That's a very high number of people looking to switch to the iPhone and I don't think simply seeing the iPhone is making people want to switch. I think the reality is that many people get sucked into the Android marketing hype and then quickly fall out of love with it.
johnomazzAug 14, 2010
And you don't think there isn't a marketing hype for the iPhone.

Too bad they cant really take their phone with them. While AT$T and T-Mobile are both GSM, They use different bands for 3G. So an AT$T iPhone will work with T-Mobile, but the fastest they will get will be EDGE.
york2600Aug 14, 2010
Not entirely true. They use different bands, but most 3G GSM phones support all the bands necessary to work on both carriers. TMobile is running 1700/2100Mhz. The iPhone 4 supports 850, 900, 1900, and 2100Mhz. It'll work just fine on TMobile

I've been with ATT since they were called Cingular Wireless and I am more than satisfied. The vocal minority in high populated areas with major wireless infrastructure/political issues continue to paint a picture which just isn't true in the rest of the country.
I live in a relatively small mid-western city and have had great service from ATT. I would not switch to Verizon because of that, though I'm certain anyone who does may just experience more of the same because if they are having problems with ATT service it's likely going to be the same no matter who the carrier is.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
I would like to ask what town, because I also live in the midwest and every small town that isn't within 20 miles of a city with a 100K+ population doesn't get 3G service and data speeds that are pretty much nonexistent. Even while traveling, none of the interstates throughout the midwest seem to have reliable 3G coverage.
agmlauncherAug 14, 2010
Here's how this will work.
1. Apple realizes that iPhone exclusivity is important to AT&T.
2. Apple puts the screws to AT&T and demands an even higher share of contract revenue from AT&T or they threaten to bring the phone to Verizon.
3. AT&T agrees, and passes the cost on to its customers....

If you ignore the proximity sensor issues as well. But, for such a good looking phone, it sure is solid and can take a hell of a lot of abuse. My 3G has scuffs everywhere, scraped corners, and a few scratches on the screen, yet it still works as well and feels as solid as the day I picked it up.

I don't get the bashing on AT&T. I have been a customer for 5 years and the service is the same as Verizon where I live. I have an HTC Hero and before, I had a Nokia N95 (I never buy a carrier phone because they always find a way to ruin a good phone). I have the cheapest 40$ a month plan, and it just work! Also, their network is GSM, so I can use the same phone when traveling outside the US.
It's funny when the whole Google/Verizon deal came out a week ago, you Diggers started bashing Verizon, and praising MS over Google, then you would bash MS against Apple while bashing the iPhone against Droid incredible because Android from Google is much better, which brings me to point of: WTF is wrong with people??!!...............................................
matt1600Aug 14, 2010
I'm one that did leave for Verizon and used their 30 day trial, I had hopes that their coverage was a lot better like their commercials pointed out. Unfortunately where it counts that I use my phone (home and work), the coverage stunk. I had the Droid X - loved the phone, absolutely loved it. My wife had the LG Ally, she loved that too.
Unfortunately if you go to one service provider for just the phone and the coverage wasn't that great in my area, it doesn't make sense.
I'll probably get buried for this part, AT&T is good in my area fast enough downloads, no dropped calls, better voice quality.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
My AT&T contract is up in October. I've been a customer since 1999. I'm going to Verizon to get an HTC and because AT&T dropped their unlimited bandwidth plan. The rollover minutes aren't enough to keep me around.
So long AT&T!
fangoriousAug 14, 2010
Um, you may want to rethink that. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/06/verizon-signals-the-end-of-the-unlimited-data-plan/
In order to keep unlimited data you'll want to look at either T-Mobile or Sprint, or one of the small carriers like Cricket or Cellular South. Actually I think Cellular south is basically an AT&T reseller, so you can probably unlock your AT&T phone and use it with Cellular South.

I'm in the process of getting an Android-based phone from Verizon. I've been with AT&T since they were Cingular, and have had nothing but problems since they merged with AT&T.
I've been an iPhone user since the original one. The last straw for me was looking at AT&T Android phones this week, only to find a sweet deal on Amazon for a $49.00 Samsung Captivate. However, that's ONLY when you get a NEW 2-year contract. Renewals don't count, and you have to have had no AT&T service for at least 60 days prior to ordering it. That's for rewarding your loyal customers AT&T. First deal I see like that for Verizon, I'm jumping ship.
youareretardedAug 14, 2010
That's amazons policy not at&t you idiot!
They have the same policy for all carriers.
fungibleAug 14, 2010
I shouldn't say this out loud - but the smart move is to stick with AT&T. It's counter-intuitive, I know.
But while AT&T just spent billions upgrading their network, and still can't keep up with demand, it's going to be - surprise! - a bottleneck nightmare when all these people move over to Verizon. Meanwhile, AT&T's going to suddenly get a lot of unexpected open space on their network.

cubeeAug 15, 2010
yea, all these people think verizon and their s**tty network will hold the amount of iphone data users. give me a break
keraneuologyAug 14, 2010
AT&T - if you eliminate the mandatory data plan and allow people to buy an android phone without requiring them to spend an additional $400/year people will flock away from Verizon by the tens if not hundreds of thousands.
Why isn't there a single cell phone company that groks the concept of giving the customers what they want?
youareretardedAug 14, 2010
Their data is already cheaper and that hasn't changed anything.
mysticaloneAug 15, 2010
Son, I am 123 years old, I am CEO of AT&T. Your smart phone requires DATA that is fed over the air through INVISIBLE wind things. Now if I can just distract you from the facts for a brief moment, you can't use your phone to it's fullest without paying for our internets. And so that's why the problem is on Apple's end.
shutupflandersAug 14, 2010
Not me. I'll happily use an inferior network if it means not having to deal with Verizon's s**tty customer service.
hipmanAug 14, 2010
Interesting priorities.
shutupflandersAug 14, 2010
Why? I've had them both and Verizon's network is only *slightly* better. Their customer service, on the other hand was awful. They were constantly signing me up for extra services that I didn't ask for, and I'd have to call them EVERY month to fix some screw up. That means every time you get your bill, you have to call, navigate through their phone menu, listen to all of their ads, wait on hold for 30 minutes, and talk to some rude idiot who MIGHT be able to fix it in one phone call. And for what? Slightly better 3G coverage in places I never go? That's a no brainer.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
I'm pretty sure most of them don't realize the shiny new iPhone 4 they bought on AT&T isn't going to work on Verizon's network.

I'm not ditching AT+T for Verizon...I'm ditching the use of cell phones and going back to a dependable (and somewhat less expensive) landline. Cellphone usage may be one area where service providers can't keep up with technology. The necessary support structure seems to be missing or obsolete.

I really hope the total isn't that much, I don't want my 3G to turn to s**t because of all the new iphone traffic.
<3 my droid :(

Droid Incredible rooted, Sky Raider 2.5.2 ROM, best phone I have ever had. iPhone is not even in the same league.
evilkrustydollAug 14, 2010
WTF is Sky Raider? This is my problem with Droid, the open source nature of it is cool but I feel like I have to be a geek to fully take advantage of it. I googled Sky Raider and only information I can find is message board postings with version histories but no explanation of what it is or screenshots.
I just want to buy a phone and have it f**king work, not troll Italian messageboards and megaupload.com for ROM flashes and custom BIOS.

Anyone else impressed with T-Mobile's customer loyalty?
evilkrustydollAug 14, 2010
T-Mobile customer service answers my calls within 1-2 minutes. Can't say the same about AT&T's internet service which had me on hold for 1 hour and 10 minutes!
mcoulter876Aug 14, 2010
I sure hope so. Maybe that will lighten the load on this iPhone user.

To me such problems!
maddogAug 14, 2010
I'd rather have the flexibility of SIM cards, than deal with CDMA devices ever again. I like switching phones whenever I feel like. To be honest my AT&T experience is not that bad.
errdayimhustlinAug 14, 2010
Can wait to switch back to Verizon. ATT is s**t.
eurynom0sAug 14, 2010
Too bad you'll probably have to buy a new phone to switch to Verizon.

2GB limit on 3G... really AT&T?

I'm looking forward to when Verizon gets an iPhone. It will finally crack the illusion (at least from tech journalists) that Verizon has some sort of magical network. Congestion is congestion. That many new iPhone customers will kill their network just like it did with AT&T in major metropolitan areas.

I can only speak from my experience, I live in a tech mountain town, Asheville, NC. We just got a huge Google facility, and also a massive Apple facility. Due to the vast change in elevation(I live at 2400 feet and 15 miles away you can be at 6,800 feet the coverage varies. I can full bars at my house, and some of my verizon friends can't even make a call at my house, and I can often not make calls at friends houses on other carries even though they get 2 or 3 bars.
So I think its a different situation for different people, depending on where you live, etc. I will say my non tech iphone friends have some apps they love and use them, while my non iphone friends who use droid bases phones will download a few apps, might get one they like and can use, but mostly get frustrated by the apps not working, crashing, etc. Being a web developer myself I certainly understand the desire to have full control, open source, etc but s**t this is my phone, I just want to be able to download any app and have it work!! Being the "tech nerd" amongst all of my friends they call me with all of there tech problems, and now with this vast array of "smart" phones on the loose I'm not getting friends asking me why they downloaded 20 droid apps and only 3 work. So yeah, just for my sanity I tell ALL of my friends, relatives, etc to buy the iPhone. Closed, yes, but the apps work! Same with the iPad, keep in mind that people who read digg are most likely tech nerds like me, our friends, family, grandparents, etc don't want to hack their devices. The JUST want to play a game or two, browse the internet(s) and check email. My dad who can't rebuild a car engine but can't turn on a computer, the iPad iPhone is PERFECT for him!! He bought the iPad 3 weeks ago and I can't believe what he is doing with it, if he had bought a pc or mac laptop forgettaboutit!!!

Ironically, 1/3rd of iPhone users leaving AT&T's infrastructure will leave it more capable of handling the other 2/3rd of their customers. hopefully it'll stop sucking ass
