Even IF GOOG wanted to change their page, this guy's "redesign" would stop them. No company wants to be sued for using another designer's idea. They would've did it if it was worth a damn. These nitpicks weren't, therefore they didn't.No Digg. Lame.
I don't understand how this got so many diggs, the guy did nothing special and not even something nice. It looks like Microsoft bought out Google! On top of that it isn't even nice.
I'm a professional graphic designer, and all the points the author makes are strong. Whether you like it or not he's exactly right, and any designer would agree with him. But, we are talking about an iconic page, and whether it lacks aesthetic value or not, it's legendary and people are already used to it.I do think google makes the mistake about not giving their other ventures more visibility. You really wanna know why google videos is tanking so badly? It's because they don't market it well at all! Not to mention on the site itself they poorly market the videos they have! They rely heavily on word of mouth to create a buzz for their own products. That worked for gmail exceptionally well, but I think the novelty is slowly wearing off on that marketing strategy. Literally millions of people visit the Google.com page daily(I wouldn't be surprised if it were billions). The least they could do was use some of that space to give recognition to some of their other products. I'm not saying clutter it up and make it harder to use, but at least make mention of some of their products. No wonder their stock is taking a hit.

Nice design, but the current layout has worked out pretty well for them, and helped to build their brand identity. It's a product feature so-to-speak.

after looking at http://dimpared.corruptspace.com/ , it is definitely not as function although it does look much better.

Easy solution to the "groups are important to me" crowd:http://groups.google.com I have my link defined as: http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_searchWorks fine, and I still get all the selections up top in the new redesign.
