Sheesh, talk about a troll submission. He did not say Jesus would personally approve anything.
Course, we know from Tebow that getting God's approval is easy.
ageofmasteryFeb 3, 2012
So is Tom Brady going to hell for kicking Tebow's ass?
stevanoskiFeb 3, 2012
LOL
pivenFeb 3, 2012
It is not charity when the government confiscates and redistributes the results of your hard work.
stevanoskiFeb 3, 2012
<crickets>
drkroman9Feb 3, 2012
If it goes to the poor and needy, then yes it is charity.
ennFeb 4, 2012
Charity is if you personally gives to others. Charity is not if you take (by force and coercion) from one person and give it to another person. The word "charity" means "love". By using force (necessary for the redistribution of wealth by government) you don't show love.
It is possible to argue for redistribution of wealth, but please don't call it charity.

A mudslide of malfeasance.
lookatme9Feb 3, 2012
What makes you think that way.
theazorianFeb 3, 2012
Jesus wouldn't endorse any government, political ideology or any organized religion.
davidnivenFeb 3, 2012
Uh, the Bible says that Jesus endorsed the entire Old Testament which is what set up Judaism. You did read the Bible, yes? They make children's editions.
[sigh]Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
duchampfitzFeb 3, 2012
He obviously didn't endorse the entire Old Testament...or there wouldn't be a "New" one.
sloppyjoes7Feb 4, 2012
If you're unfamiliar with what Jesus said, you'll look less foolish when giving your opinion on the subject.
igorunchainedFeb 3, 2012
NOW the right doesnt like politicians invoking the bible....let's see how long that lasts.
Man...wouldnt it be great to have it both ways and STILL play the victim?
norman619Feb 3, 2012
"NOW the right doesnt like politicians invoking the bible"

Oh I see the Liberals all thumbed you down for that observation. Typical for Diggsters. They can't tolerate hearing the truth, so they just thumbs it down... usually without comment. Oh well.
luke1h7Feb 3, 2012
It shouldn't matter what someone who allegedly lived 2012 years ago thought. They thought earthquakes were God's anger, not tectonic plates moving. You people are f**king stupid.
phillymozartFeb 3, 2012
With all the concern about separation of Church and State, we can't have a president allowing his religious beliefs to influence public policy!
Oh, wait. He's a Democrat.
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
lol nice, the right gets to invoke jesus or the bible pretty much every time it affect$ their bottom line and Obama does it to raise a point! and look at the neocons digging this!
charlotte_webFeb 3, 2012
Kind of the same way that when a Republican is involved in a sex scandal, Democrats are hooting and hollering about "family values," when the reality is that they could give a rat's ass if it were anyone other than a Republican politician.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
you meant to say when a republican is involved in a pedophile or hypocritical gay sex scandal didn't you?
charlotte_webFeb 3, 2012
Thank you for proving my point with your comment about the "hypocritical gay sex scandal".
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
you only think im proving your point because you consistently fail to educate yourself on the meaning of hypocrisy (along with everything else) see lizbett, when someone who constantly shoves the illusion of gop family values down everyones throat and willfully pushes anti-gay legislature gets caught in a gay prostitution scandall....well thats straight up hypocrisy there. ease cite an example of a dem politician pushing anti-gay legislature getting caught in a gay sex scandall. ill be waiting
charlotte_webFeb 3, 2012
And here we have the leader of the Democratic Party -- the party that is so forcefully shoving their version of the "separation of church and state" down our throats -- invoking the name of Jesus at every turn as part of his election year campaign strategy.
No, that's not hypocritical at all!
The_SovereignFeb 3, 2012
They could give a rat's ass? Who couldn't, though? Rat asses aren't worth much.

I'm an Atheist and this offends the hell out of me. Not because he's invoking religion, but because he's so arrogant that he thinks he can speak for a deity.
drkroman9Feb 3, 2012
So you are an atheist but believe in deities. I think you are doing it wrong.
takamalakFeb 3, 2012
The new Jesus transformed by the right wouldn't. Here he is in all his glory.

That Jesus would kick the poor's ass for being poor and beat up some queers for fun.
lookatme9Feb 3, 2012
Why should Obama drag Jesus in his pursuit of a tax policy?
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
he didnt, the submitter did. rtfa
digger1123Feb 3, 2012
"For me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus's teaching that for unto whom much is given, much shall be required" Pretty much exactly what the title says.
liscombcFeb 3, 2012
The comments here are pretty terrible and are nothing constructive going on.
Now to stay on topic, I don't believe the Bible supports a mandated increase in taxes to "help the poor."
1st - Just because taxes go up, doesn't mean poor people will be helped more. That increase in taxes is just as likely to buy more bombs, ships, etc, and pay for govenmental pet projects.
2nd - The fed has no right to play robin hood on its people. People should be able to decide what they do with their own money, and whom it goes to.
Lastly, the people themsleves need to be sturred to help and aid the poor at their own discretion, not mandated by a king.
The_SovereignFeb 3, 2012
1st - 2 wrongs don't make a right. The rich should pay more taxes AND the government should spend that money to improve the lives of all citizens.
2nd - Yes it does, and yes they should, but within reason.
Your last sentence I agree with completely; that is the means by which we will seize power. We are no longer in an age where a benevolent king would be efficient. The people can make up their own minds on the issues.
Oh, and I don't give a s**t what the bible says in this context.
norman619Feb 3, 2012
Ummm.... no he wouldn't. If I remember right Jesus didn't give a damn about material wealth and didn't advocate taking what isn't yours to take. Obama is shameless.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What about that whole line about rendering unto Caesar that which belongs to Caesar?
StopAnimalTortureFeb 3, 2012
Are you saying that Obama = Caesar?
takamalakFeb 3, 2012
Of course not, only an idiot would come to that conclusion. I can only imagine that you are simply being facetious and not idiotic.
Caesar = Government. We pay our taxes to the government regardless of the head of state at the time.
yaosioFeb 3, 2012
Bzz, wrong. Jesus said that it is easier to get a camel through the eye of the needle than for a poor man to get into heaven.
kebabdylanFeb 3, 2012
please tell me you are being ironic...
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
you mean "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a RICH man to enter the kingdom of God."
Mark 10:25
unless you forgot your /s tag of course
stevanoskiFeb 3, 2012
the eye of the needle was a small gate that a man could stoop to get through. It was used to provide safety to travelers who arrived after the towns gate was closed from theives/murderers.
To get a camel through you had to unload the camel and get it to crawl through on it's knees.
Interestingly it's application to the rich man is that it is possible to get into heaven but only if you unburden yourself (of riches?).

chill out people, his time is almost over and america will be better.
KapsiotFeb 3, 2012
Obama sure loves him some Jesus!
NoGodzFeb 3, 2012
Obama's learned that these days the only way you can get a large segment of the American people to listen to you is to pepper your speech with biblical references. That's what we've come to. f**k.
ferretmanFeb 3, 2012
Firstly: No, no he wouldn't Mr. Obama. He'd shake his head sadly at how far astray you've gone.
Secondly: Where are the Diggerals screaming about mixing politics and religion here? When BUSH said anything remotely like this they were practically frothing about how such comments were "destroying democracy" and other such nonsense? 5.2 "to post or transmit any content that is infringing, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, offensive, profane, or otherwise violates any law or right of any third party, or content that contains homophobia, ethnic slurs or religious intolerance"
cherwilcoFeb 3, 2012
"Hope you include yourself in your class warfare plan." ~sandylanders
from the second paragraph of the article YOU submitted:
"Obama said that as a person who has been "extraordinarily blessed," he is willing to give up some of the tax breaks he enjoys because doing so makes economic, and religious sense."
so did you just decide to completely alter the context of the article when submitting or do you just imagine that's what the article probably really meant?
buried and reported
sandylandersFeb 3, 2012Submitter
His message is class warfare. For something to be charitable it has to be unforced. He babbles about "blessed" and the bastard miser gives 1% to charity. He obviously does not think his message applies to himself. Reported? Laughable.
duchampfitzFeb 3, 2012
Only the wealthy would compare having to pay taxes with the experience of war. Not only are corporations people, apparently your money is worth the same as other peoples' children.

KEEP YOUR RELIGION OUT OF MY GOVERNMENT! SEPARATION of CHURCH and STATE! Grrrrrr!

Long overdue that the wealthy pay a fair share of society needs...

duchampfitzFeb 3, 2012

davidnivenFeb 3, 2012
Jesus talked about charity. It's not charity, however, when the government confiscates and redistributes wealth.
stevanoskiFeb 3, 2012
They can't answer you can they?
drkroman9Feb 3, 2012
How is that not charity? The government is using its money (which is acquires from taxation) to give to the poor and needy. Hence charity.
thedeffilFeb 3, 2012
Jesus also said that which is owed to Caesar, pay to Caesar, and that which is owed to God to give to God.
But you know, selective Bible reading.
sandylandersFeb 4, 2012Submitter
That which is "owed to Caesar" is dictated by tax law. For Mitt Romney who gets dividend and capital gains income (like my retired 80 yr old mother) pays 15%. That is the goddam law. But, for us who earn a paycheck we have 7.5% SS and medicare on income to $106,800, state income tax and federal income tax. Add them all together and my wife and I pay almost 30%. That again is the goddam law. Now when we retire we are out of the SS tax and will be paying dividend and capital gains taxes at whatever rate the law prescribes.
That "which is owed" is a game and we use deductions to limit that which is "owed to Caesar." Obama can go f**k himself. The cheap ass mother f...ker and Moochelle give 1% to charity. Our flirtation with hope and bulls**t is coming to an end.
thedeffilFeb 4, 2012
Obama actually tried to do something to end that... and because he didn't have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate (remember, a Republican took Ted Kennedy's seat), they were defeated. Blame the obstructionists and direct your anger where it needs to be directed. Blame people like Mitt Romney because they are the ones who wrote the current tax code to line their coffers.
sandylandersFeb 6, 2012Submitter
I don't "blame" anyone per se. We cannot tax our way to prosperity and I for one will use any loophole provided for in the tax law to be sure that I pay what I owe in taxes and not one dollar more to the Federal govt. Whether it is the tax and spend rapist Obama or some other idiot in the White House makes no difference.
The govt debt is now 101% of GDP. Its 160% in Greece to be 120% by 2020. Greek "restructuring" of debt is a euphemism for default. We are headed that way also. Obama can take every penny from the top 1% and that is not enough to run his deficits for one year.
