engadget.com — As promised, variable pricing has now been implemented at the iTunes music store. Already, we're seeing most of top 10 singles and 33 of the top 100 hitting the top price-point of $1.29 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps AAC). Interesting as Amazon's uncomfortably similar top 10 list has all these tracks priced at $0.99 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps...

@tobiasprojecttobiasproject No good albums since 1994? WTF, really?!I am sorry, but if you haven't found one decent album in 15 years something is wrong with your ears.Or maybe you love hair metal and have been waiting for its return to the limelight...

Guess what? Apple will do fine with this. The convenience of iTunes purchasing will be enough for most users not to mess around with Amazon's store. Blame the record labels for sure, but don't cry too much for Apple. Just be glad that DRM is DEAD!I, for one, though, have been purchasing from both for over a year.

If you MUST pay for music, Apple's AAC format (without DRM of course) provides superior quality/file size compared to MP3. And unless you have some loser non-iPod music player, you should have no problem with AAC.Most of my music collection happens to be MP3, but that's mainly a result of years of rejecting DRM formats. Now there's no reason to avoid AAC, all else being equal.

"Yeah? Is that why they cost 30% more on iTunes?"No idiot, they cost 30% more because the record labels want to hurt iTunes' popularity. The only reason you see $0.99 songs is because Apple and iTunes pioneered it. If not for Apple, you'd be paying $2.99 for DRM'd Windows Zune WMA files.

Wrong. There'd still be people making music. Just because the money is gone doesn't mean I'd get rid of my guitar.Although it does mean that bands like Metallica might piss off.NAPSTER BAD!

I'm sure even after reading this many people will buy tracks from Itunes because they are such Apple whores.

Agreed. Paying for songs is retarded. It costs nothing for them to deliver that song to their fans now. Go see them live and download their songs for free. Their songs should be a way to sell you tickets to their live shows.

Yes, cause all the musicians in the world are millionaires.
