discussions.apple.com — I upgraded to ITunes 7 today and now ALL of the songs in my library are extremely distorted when I play them. There is crackeling, static, skipping, and they sound like garbage. When I play the same songs in a different media player they sound fine.

If you are using the windows version try this:Control Panel/Quick Time/Audio Tab/Size = 16 bit.

I'm experiencing the same problem. This is a huge problem because every time I try to multitask I hear noticeable skipping and corruption. I hope Apple releases a patch soon. PS. None of the fixes work for me.

It works perfectly fine on my iMac with 2 GB RAM. I think it makes the most sense that this is an issue with people not having enough memory.

"So it appears that the audio components in iTunes 7 share some resources with other programs and iTunes 7 doesn't like to share."Yes, on OS X they both use Core Audio, on Windows they both use DirectX. Core Audio is fine with multiplexing audio (and sharing the soundcard) from different applications, where as DirectX isn't always that forgiving.

Syncing my ipod isnt completely locking up itunes, but the process does take several times longer than it used to. Seems like about 15-20 minutes before itunes even begins copying new files. Wonder if its related to the fact that even though I've not enabled disk use, it shows up as a hard drive in windows every time I connect. All this is new since itunes 7.

Like the guy above me, it goes away at full volume.I also had the issue of whenever I began to type on the keyboard, iTunes would stop playing no matter what application I was in. Weeeeird s**t.

Its happening to a co-worker of mine. He had to install media player 11 because of it

A friend of mine is currently experiencing the same problem...although I haven't looked at it yet he says that it's really RAM dependent, seeing as he doesn't have much, I might believe it.

I fixed the static playback problem by setting my audio preferences at 16bit, not 24bit as I had selected.Still, iTunes 6 never had this problem.

This is the only thing that fixed the problem for me.<a class="user" href="http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html">http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html</a>

I am sick of dealing with Apple's iTunes/iPod. I am on my second iPod (first one died), and my second one needs to be reset and restarted constantly. I have also never successfuly installed iTunes on my or my g/f's computer without dealing with at least one problem. If they are going to release beta software they should call it beta. Never buying an iPod again.

Oddly enough, I went to try the setting of audio size to 16bit and it was on 16 bit... so I set it to 24bit and my problem hasn't shown back up yet. Who knows... I know it worked for me, so I'm content for the moment.

Mine skipped horribly. I did everything. Fixed quick time. Downloaded every update known to man and computer. Defraged and did disk scan. Turned off my outlook and AIM. Monitored the mem. usage of my 1 gig. of RAM. Analyzed page file usage. Ran every single check. However....Only one thing worked. I turned of the cross fade playback and the sound enhancer with two simple clicks and that fixed my problem. Not even a single pause. So good luck.

My imported songs were either lost, or started skipping all over the place. I tried what it said at the top, it helped a little but still most of my imported songs skip like 5 seconds into them.

Oops - new to this type of chat - forgot to mention the most important thing - I installed v7.0.1.8.

(picking up on judgeroybean - that's me. I just forgot my details and it was quicker to create a new profile) I upgraded to 7.0.2 thinking this might address any underlying problem. Fat chance. The problem immediately came back. Resolved again by uninstalling QT then re-installing on it's own ~(that is without the iTunes offered on Apple's site). So, Apple have released a buggy version in 7.0.1 that renders the entire package unusable as installed, then released version 7.0.2 without appearing to pay any attention to this bug despite their own website recommending how to fix the bug. Now seriously wondering how hard it will be to just move to Windows media player and wait for my iPod battery to die before replacing it with something that will actually run the software provided by the manufacturer

I came across this group while doing a search for the same problem: a friend's laptop stuttered and skipped something awful and it wasn't just in iTunes -- any music player did it. I tried all the fixes here, but found the one that worked (at least for me!) on this site. It seems if your controller is working in PIO mode, it works too slowly, causing the stuttering. It must be in DMA mode to play music (and other files, I imagine) smoothly:First, open your device manager, click on IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllersRight click on the controller that operates the device (on my laptop, it was the primary IDE channel)Go to "Advanced Settings"Transfer mode should be DMA, and the Current Transfer Mode should also be a DMA. If the Current Transfer Mode is showing as PIO, then you have to reset it by first changing the Transfer Mode to PIO, click OK, then change it back to DMA. Click OK. Exit out of the Device Manager. Doublecheck that the Current Transfer Mode remained as DMA (it may not). If it didn't, use the following registry fix at your own risk:Credit given to:<a class="user" href="http://sniptools.com/tipstricks/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp">http://sniptools.com/tipstricks/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp</a>CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can revert to using PIO mode, despite being set to use “DMA if Available.” Here’s how to make Windows XP redetect the DMA capabilities of the drives. This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:Windows XP is the operating system A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, which is known to support DMA mode now works only in PIO mode. The drive controller is set to use “DMA if available” but reports to be only in PIO mode. Following is the mechanism that has worked for me, please try it at your own risk, it involves hacking the registry: Open RegEdit Find the following KEY: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl Class{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 00xThe last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values: MasterIdDataChecksum SlaveIdDataChecksum Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect DMA settings.

so i am very late in this discussion, but i have recently upgraded to vista and have had some problems - i did the quicktime changes that people suggested and it didn't work out - also - the files play fine in windows media player but skips in the middle to the next song - its only some songs, but the fact that windows media player can play it and itunes can't frustrates me - is this just the known vista/itunes compatibility issues - or is there a fix to this as well? the same files say error 37 if i try to play them in quicktime. i'm convinced this is a microsoft v. apple conspiracy....

This bug is affecting me too. The "skipping" sound like a random pop or crackle every three to five seconds. Somebody suggested it might be processor speed. Nope! Intel Core 2 Duo registering 3% on P1, 0% on P2. Somebody else suggested it might be a lack of memory, but I have 2GB registering 44% free. Others have suggested it might iTunes download in the background. But with iTunes 6 I would browse the store while listening to music in my library without a single skip, also I have a VERY fast connection. The 16bit and sound optimization ideas also do not work. Hope Apple fixes it soon. It's very annoying!

The last 20 or 30 posts are all good tech help ideas and still 'fanboy' diggs down everyone as they are posted. Watch this diggs count turn negative too--------------------------------------------------->

I just compiled the exact steps I took to get this fixed as an article in this post:<a class="user" href="http://coding-passion.blogspot.com/2008/11/itunes-music-stuttering-issue.html">http://coding-passion.blogspot.com/2008/11/itunes- ...</a>Hope it throws some light for someone.
