engadget.com — Remember Hymn? You should, back in the day (like, um, 2004) it allowed you to strip the FairPlay DRM right off iTunes Music Store bought files just like that; well, it's been a long time in coming, but a new app called QTFairUse looks like it can now be used (with some amount of difficulty) to dump iTunes version 6.0.4 - 6.0.5....

...Given all of this, it stands to reason that soon enough illegal (in America) stores will pop up that utilize all these cracks to bring you music for a very low price, DRM free. All the money earned that doesn't go to server upkeep will be mailed to the artists via a monthly check. In five years, it will be a lucrative business, so start now. Get the good domains...

I don't think you understand the fundamental difference between the method this post is about and the method you are describing. You are talking about recording the data from your soundcard. This is AFTER your computer has converted it from its raw aac stream into a waveform. This entails a loss of quality (an arguably small one, but some people are picky about their music [yours truly included]). The method in this 'quasi-crack' rips the raw aac stream from your computers memory AFTER it has been decrypted, but BEFORE it has been converted to a waveform. Same data = no loss in quality. There it NO loss of quality when using this process.

I have compiled a zip file of all the programs you need to go from m4p (protected iTunes file) => raw acc => regular aac => mp4 (unprotected iTunes file), along with some rudimentary instructions. There are three programs you need. I have done it, and have successfully converted some of my songs already. If people are interested, digg this up and I'll find a place online for it. It may save people a bit of searching, as it took me a while to find everything.P.S. I'm working on a method to retain tag info, but I'm not there yet... :-(

Well Apple just release iTunes 7, my guess this won't work anymore....

I find it incredibly ironic that iTunes 7 came out literally weeks after 6 was cracked. Can't a hacker catch a break?
