engadget.com— Seems like on Engadget they are saying if you bought your touch after January first, which lots prob got it for Christmas, but those that didn't might be eligible to get the new apps for free

I'm assuming that was sarcasm because of course you will have to pay. It will be a requirement that the apps are signed (costs ???) and they will be distributed through iTunes. Mark my words. How many people will pay for a signing certificate and then distribute their apps for free? Apple might even charge a fixed price per download making free apps impossible.
In the past when Apple had a smaller user base they would not have even considered charging for updates or new applications for fear of losing customer support. Now, with such a large following maybe Apple feels their products can justify charging for updates and people will accept it.This could be an extremely unwise decision Mr Jobs!
Haha, guess what?I went to buy an 8GB iPod touch (the ipod touch without the new software upgrade) yesterday from the local Circuit City for 278$ (they were on sale). In the store, all the Touches was posted for 299$, but I told them they were on sale on circuitcity.com, and they agreed to give me the sale price on it. But later at home, I turn on my iTouch, and its the new one, with the latest software upgrade, John Lennon’s box art, and the new apps! (The software upgrade costs 20$, from apple.com).I guess they didn’t know that the OLD (Macy Gray, i believe) ipod touches were supposed to be sold at the sale price, and let me have the new one. (I didnt realize that the John Lennon box art were those of the new iPods either.)Today, I check Circuit City’s website and they have realized the loophole, and thus -“All Ipods on Sale - *Excludes iPod touch MA623LLB/MA627LLB [The John Lennon ones]”Moral of the story: Go to a store, ask for the old version of a gadget thats on sale, and hopefully get the new version instead (for the old version’s sale price!)I love ignorant salespersons.
i got the update (1.1.3) through iTunes in Free! Even though i bought the iTouch before january started, i think around 26 th Dec..ive not updated yet as theres not a perfect jailbreaker..nyone intersted in gettin it, email me, im chargin less than half the price apple charges it. lol
The TRUTH is....in order to be eligible for the the upgrade, you not only had to have purchased your ipod touch after Jan 1, but you also must have purchased it from an apple store. I purchased mine at Target, after the software upgrade was released and got shafted on the upgrade. When i contacted apple, they told me i was out of luck b/c I didn't buy at the apple store...Nice customer service....it's crazy b/c they can tell by the serial number, when you purchased it and the customer service rep even verified it-go figure!
F***ing hell people its like upgrading from xp to vista this is some thing new you wouldn't expect them to give vista away for free of course you could always go to projectw.org

It's actually http://applerepo.com since they got their new domain. And, of course, this only works on jailbroken iPod Touches.

How is the Zune comparable to the AppleTV and not the iPod?

iTunes has it written as an Update. Even though the price is $9.95 now, it's still a stupid charge.
