havanalion.com — Update to iPod saves Soldiers life. I talked to Kevin Garrad this afternoon and here's the story firsthand: The armor stopped the bullet. The iPod was how Kevin Garrad found out he was shot. This is the real story of what happened to the iPod.

Yeah. RTFA. He was not listening to his iPod while in the firefight, but afterward, when he was cleaning his weapon.

psst...there was a hole through the ipod. if the armor stopped the bullet, then the ipod wouldn't have a bullet through the ipod. dugg inaccurate. you might want to see if you can get in the rosie o'donnell show--i bet you believe that fire doesn't melt steel, too.

Hey, asshat. You ever hear of pockets? Yeah, they're on the OUTSIDE of your standard issue flack jackets and bulletproof armor. Why? Well, that way the soldier doesn't have to OPEN the protective device in order to get at whatever he or she needs. You see, that's what happens when _smart_ people design body armor. Stay in school. You're going to need it.

There are a lot of people who have been shot in combat without armor and don't realize until later. Adrenaline works wonders. Getting shot don't throw you backwards and the impact against the armor is no bigger than the recoil impact on the shoulder of the guy firing the weapon, something that should be quite easy to not notice in the midst of combat. Remember that the armor works by dispersing the impact force over a large area.During my time in the Swedish armed forces we where trained to carefully examine each other after a firefight just to make sure no one had been hit and not realizing it.

Jeez, an iPod would slow that bullet down as much as a piece of paper. If a layer of plastic and a 0,2 milimeter thick layer of metal was needed for the armor to stop a bullet, wouldn't the armor already incorporate those invaluable features? The iPod did nothing at all to save his life. Get over it.

I agree to an extent: 15m effective range is bs, anyone with any real expeience with firearms knows this. The 15m may come from some estimated effective combat range of the gun, given that a light weight hand gun like the Glock models, are quite inaccurate when fired in a hurry. But if you hit it will definatly ruin the guys day, even if it is at 30 metres.Another thing people underestimate is the destructiveness of an Assault rifle. Maybe people have been playing to many games or watched to many movies, but a military assault rifle is a devastating weapon. An AK-47 won't poke nice little holes in the hood of a car and you won't be safe from it behind a car door or even behind the car. It will reduce a car, and anyone hiding behind it, to a smoldering wreck in seconds. This is also why I do disagree with you on the last point: The iPod wouldn't make any difference whatsoever. There are bodyarmor that can stop the 7,62x39, but the layers of plastic in the iPod won't make any difference at all.

Having been in the Corps, I can tell you that when you're in a fight for your life, you don't feel much of anything until much later -- even an AK round hittin' the vest.
