protect.gadgettheft.com — Cool new free service that tracks stolen USB gadgets like MP3 players, cameras and USB flash drives etc. When the device is stolen you log into the server, flag it as stolen and the next time the device is plugged into a computer it sends the owner of the device info about that system like IP address, location, username and computer name and more.

Run a google for "youve_been_stolen" and find a friend with a server if you don't have your own.

eric4: there is actually an open source program like this, but you had to set up your own sql server and it was a pain in the arse. I was thinking about writing my own. Instead of JUST phoning home. it would also install a virus on the person's machine. In addition, upon command, it would change the graphics on the ipod to things like "you stole my iPod!". Also, if i eventually told the iPod , it would self destruct. That is it would totally wipe the iPod firmware and take out a few system files. (of the host machine).

No offense but thats definitely going to be a lot harder than you think. If you think that just because you used this site and you have an IP that the judge is going to get the ISP to hand over the address of the individual you are nuts. Besides the fact that this is a lot of work over a stolen USB device. I'd much rather shell out $40 for a new thumbdrive than to go through of all of that.

But the pawn shop would have a record of who they bought it from. Here in the states this usually entails a driver's license etc and some states have even more stringent laws. If you were able to trace the stolen iPod to someone who bought it from a pawn shop, the police would then go to that pawn shop and get the information from the person who sold it to them. This would also help locate crooked pawn shops, if the police were able to trace multiple stolen devices back to a particular pawn shop.

I have the lowrance iway 500c GPS system, it's a 500 dollar system, the problem with this service is that you never need to plug the system into a computer. Only time you would do that is to update the device, which is once a year if and only if they decide to spend 70 bucks on a new cd for the new navteq data.. Not worth my 20 bucks a year.
