In a perfect world, that's the way it would work. Hopefully, apple will be kind enough to provide it. However, flash prices will drop, hardward will become faster (3G? n-wireless?), so there will always be incentive to buy newer hardware.

the indexing can be done on the mac/pc side since they know everything that goes to the phone through itunes.

Indexing is a one time thing. After you just monitor change.

HEY GUYS I HAVE THE BEST PHONE EVER BUT THE MOON ON A STICK WOULD BE NICE

No phone can search by number other than pressing it in and typing call... then technically it would tell you who you had called. However I agree that it would be good to be able to actually search on name.

ok nutzoid. Not sure asking for Exchange and 3G is the moon on a stick - seems to be a feature of most WM and Symbian phones!
