Not entirely. I am however a gadget fiend - with a huge stash of gadgets and I have been buying and reading about the latest gadgets for 20+ years - so hopefully I do know a thing or two.Anyway, I do try to keep the 'whining' to a minimum. I don't comment so regularly on Digg anymore. But sometimes stories like this do interest me.Pretty much everything I said can be boiled down to one question however (to make it easier for those with a short attention span to read) and that is, 'Apart from hard core Apple fanboys, who is this supposed to be for?'I mean it's a fair question - because I and probably a lot of other people just don't get it.

Archos is making super cool media players - just as media playing moves to phones. Apple sees this, and is just in time for the shift...

"Things like volume control, d-pads, and hotkeys come in awfully handy too."There are actual buttons for volume control on the side of the iPhone."Tap-and-drag to move"? "double-tap-and-drag to zoom"? How confusing and unintuitive. I guess some little icon lights up to tell you that you're in zoom mode? Do you have to double-tap each time you want to get in zoom mode? So essentially you're using the same gesture to move and zoom, the double-tap being the difference? Ok... if that works well for you. I think that "drag to move" and "pinch-in-or-out to zoom" is not only more intuitive, but more efficient and quicker. And on the iPhone the double-tap can be used for a third function."the edges of the screen also activate modifiers in some situations."I hate when things activate themselves when you reach the edges of the screen. Again, this is just a way to get around the shortcomings of a single-touch screen."Granted if you're not a geek or corporation you don't care about developing your own apps. Third party apps provide something for EVERYBODY though. My family is the biggest bunch of non-geeks you've ever seen. My grandma loved my e-book reader. My dad thought Sling Player was incredible. My mom got a kick out of the games I have. My sister was impressed with my IM client and my universal remote app. And if you try and take away TomTom GPS from my wife you might lose a hand. "But do they have smartphones themselves? Why not? And if they did, do you think they'd scour the web looking for third party apps for their phones? Not only would they have to find a safe source of these programs, but then they'd had to filter through the crap applications and find the good ones. Then they'd have to install them, and hope there's not some compatibility problem with the current version of Windows Mobile and the device they have.I was disappointed when I learned that the iPhone will be closed at first, but at the same time, with all the hype surrounding the iPhone, do you realize how much opportunity for iPhone "crapware" there would be? "Free games/smilies/chat for your iPhone!!! Click here now!!!"I'm pretty sure Apple will allow third-party apps along the way, maybe not in a completely open way, only sanctioned apps, but there will be games and other third-party apps."Touchscreens don't offer much precision at all--that's one area a stylus comes in handy. "A multi-touch can offer more precision when a stylus is not used, obviously not as much as a stylus, but more than traditional touch-screen. How? Let's say you try to push a virtual button on the screen, but your finger ends up touching the button to its left, just a little, while the rest of your finger is on the right button. Multi-touch allows (via software) to discriminate between the button you slightly touch and the one you were aiming for."You never know what Apple will release, and unfortunately you can't count on third party applications either. Apple certainly hasn't bent over backwards releasing apps for the iPod. We'll see how it goes. "The current iPods are a different beast. I have some knowledge about its OS, and well it's a little "patchy". Probably not much more than other mp3 players, but it's only becoming more modular with the latest versions, with more standard data structures used to build the interfaces of things like the Stopwatch. The OS itself is not exactly good at multitasking and probably doesn't have protected memory, so while games are a good candidate for third-party apps since they take over the screen and processes, other apps could cause more troubles, maybe crashing the player in the process, which is a very bad thing for a consumer electronic product like an mp3 player. The iPhone on the other hand, runs some variation of OS X."It's possible, but remember that Apple is getting a cut from AT&T. iChat would decrease Apple's profits too. "We don't know the exact details of the Apple/AT&T contract, maybe Apple is getting a fixed amount from each subscriber contracts, and doesn't get anything for extras like SMS messages. Apple traditionally makes its money from hardware. Having iChat on the iPhone would certainly be an incentive to buy the device, hence increase their profits. And since buyers are required to have an AT&T contract anyway...Ok that's too much digg posting for me tonight :)

"""What makes you think Samsung, Motorola, SonyEricsson, etc, are going to succeed in making an iPhone killer? Don't you think if they could have, they already would have? Why would they wait until someone else does it first? Why vie for second place when they could have won first by default?"""Erm, they already have, the only thing left to do when the iPhone is released is enlarge the screen and release the current gen of software they've been talking about (full-size browser, etc), and they are selling the same thing for 1 or 2 hundred bucks less.I've had 2GB of storage, mp3 player and mp4 player, opera browser, 3.2 megapixel camera, j2me games (sonic, street fighter 2 etc), ebook reading and so on for ages using the most popular modern phone - the k800.Don't get me wrong, I really want the iPhone to be great, that Apple UI and the screen are enough to pique my interest alone, but in terms of feature set, the iPhone is really nothing particularly special for the price - SE/Nokia/whoever can do it better than them and cheaper than them, and have been in the business longer than them.

Is the price confirmed? I will get one if the price is lower than $499 (4GB).

@titlesaysitall: You say "joking?" like you think I might have been serious about my ridiculous claim. So yes, I was joking. It might not be the most hilarious joke you've ever heard, but Digg comments are not where I go to test out new material. @Loyaleagle: If I thought you had any social skills I'd dare you to try to spit out such an awkward insult to my face. Really, the best you could come up with was a list of clustered computing tasks?I'm disappointed that so many Digg users can't allow for a little bit of humor to permeate their threads. Stop taking yourselves so seriously. There is a society out there, and 95% of it doesn't give a crap about technology stories.
