news.digitaltrends.com — Hackers and security companies have been tearing apart the iPhone, to check and bypass its security. Many are trying to find a way to hack the code that binds the iPhone to AT&T. Once successful – and a successful hack is expected this week – the iPhone could be used on any network. Will they do it by Friday?

It depends on the wording of the law. I've only skimmed over it, but I remember it just saying that the consumer is allowed the right to unlock their phone. The carrier does not have to unlock it for them upon request. Here's the paper if you're interested: http://www.copyright.gov/1201/docs/1201_recommendation.pdf

Sorry, where do you live in the U.K. where you have mobile access to free WiFi '99% of the time'? I live in the country's largest city & it's nothing close to that. Also I think you people are forgetting about visual voicemail and all the other network reliant features.Wait for the 3G version chaps.

Eh, well, if it has been, it's in an academic sense only. It's not truly cracked until Joe User can use it with the SIM of his choice. And they're not to that stage yet.

That, or they figure out how Apple patches it, and figure out a way to circumvent future patches.

Well, debbe gibson sold a lot of records, but that doesnt mean shes any good. Releasing a smartphone without some kind of sdk is prety foolish in the long run. The two people I know who have this kind of money to drop are myself and my brother. I didnt buy one because Im pretty happy with all the apps on my treo, but he bought one only to find out it doesnt work like his blackberry does at work. He returned it. Essentially, apple is not bothering with 3rd party apps (leaving iphone owners in the world of sidekick, centrally controlled apps only) and thus closing many markets. For the sms obsessed teen and scenester this is a pretty hot item, like a My chemical romance album.
