Word from an Apple guy I talked to was they didn't use the 3G chip due to (A) Power Consumption and (B) Proliferation of said 3G networks. Most times when you are on a cellular data network you are on an EDGE network. At this time, 3G is not a viable option, since if they implemented it, most of you would say "the iPhone is too slow on a 3G connection, and the battery life sucks!" Seems like Apple can't win either way on this one.
Overall the Windows OS is actually very compatable with one another, and is the most hardware-friendly OS i've found so far.Personal 5 system OS install test:Fedora Core 2 - Not support all hardwareMandriva - Not Support all hardwareKnoppix - Support MOST hardware....Apple - Not support hardwareWindows Vista and XP SP1+ - Support ALL Hardware out of the box.Speed is another issue, but these systems are 2-6 years old and windows is completely usable from install without needing extra drivers or Command Line stuff. woot.
Browsing on the iPhone is totally fine; it's better than my last two smartphones (p800, p910a), and despite the 'EDGE' spectre that people scream about, it's still faster and more reliable than even the best situations I could squeeze out of the T-Mobile service I was had here in NYC... And the pages actually look like the way they were designed, not tall column versions with no regard to the original layout.Just use the phone, check it out for yourself. It's kind of a big deal.
