technewsworld.com — Apple is threatening to change the rules of the mobile handset game. "Microsoft's overwhelmingly dominant position in the desktop OS market has let it go ahead with proprietary systems and formats time and time again, keeping users locked in without being too obvious about it"

copied from it? really? last i checked the ipod has a one way street as far as (playable on the ipod) music storage concerned. has something changed? i mean for an average user, not using some quasi-legal tool.

microsoft both creates and promotes open formats. examples? ok: microsoft promotes xml. microsoft created and promotes the cli standard (<a class="user" href="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569283.aspx).">http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569283.aspx).</a> please stop trying to say apple has better morals than microsoft. they are both just for profit companies. nothing else.

I for one consider the closed-ness of iPhone a positive thing. To me, stability and battery life are paramount in a mobile device and if you think that 3rd party apps won't sacrifice this then you're fooling yourself. As long as the iPhone performs it's core set of competencies (what you use it for 99% of the time) extremely well then it will be a success. For those who want a million features on their phone, you'll get them with a WM device, though the overall quality will be severely lacking.Down the road I would like to see Apple institute some kind of application certification process so that QUALITY 3rd party apps can be built for the device without sacrificing usability, stability, battery life, etc.
