What is the point in this? An iphone update can easily undo anything these guys accomplish and you could be locked out of services if you don't upgrade. But despite that don't carries have to by law offer to unlock a phone if asked?

I thought that European cellular companies could not lock phones to their network. How did Apple manage to get around this?
