tuaw.com — While Ngmoco has emerged as one of the iPhone's top original developers, they've also lost a lot of fans by sticking with a model they call "freemium," even to the detriment of some of their most popular games.

It's an interesting a legit way of monetizing their apps. Though I think it devalues apps generally in the same sense most apps gravitate towards $0.99. To the point everyone acts like spoiled brats if an app sells for $1.99 or more and rate it down for charging so much. We're basically ending up with a diluted app store and it's only time before developers decide it's not worth their time. Which would be a shame because the iPhone OS is a good platform with decent apps. Apple really need to alter their ranking algorithm so that a $1.99 app counts as double that of a $0.99 app, instead of just going on sales or whatever it is they're doing.

If it works for them, great!Pricing a game for app store is quite difficult I think, we're in the process of releasing a game in about two months or so but we haven't reached agreement on a price, I think probably 2$ works best, but we'll see where we end up. Too bad we can't be on GDC ourselves, but our game is supposed to be demoed at the Unity stand, so hopefully we get some good attention (haven't distributed game outside a few friends so it's an exciting time). Okay, let's blatantly promote our game: http://revoltgame.info/ , we hope to release it somewhere in May, and one of the features we hope to include (but probably have to wait till a later update) is multiplayer. Any diggers who have published games? Which price you used and how well did it sell? Guess I need to do a little research on prices and sales in the App Store.

Ends justify the means logic if I've ever heard it... usually doesn't work out great.
