gizmodo.com — Since Apple announced that they're lowering the price for iPhone 3G down to $199, people have been rumbling about how the increased AT&T data plan price negates any savings you get up front on the phone. Over two years, the iPhone 3G will cost $160 more over the original iPhone. This includes the unlimited data plan plus...

SMS has a separate data channel in the GSM standard. SMS doesn't take up any resources that could be used for phone calls or other data. So, it's pretty much a no-cost feature from the carrier's point of view.People pay what they pay though. If someone is willing to pay me $1000 for a gallon of milk, I'll happily sell them that.

Plus Sprint's EVDO coverage is much better than AT&T's 3G coverage.

For those farther away from metropolitan cities, I agree. But if you live within 50 miles of a city of decent size, T-mobile will be as good of reception as AT&T

Actually, in many parts of the world such as Asia, 10-15 USD gets you a monthly plan with 500-1000 SMS.It's only marked up in the States because no one uses them and the providers figured that lowering the price wouldn't convince more people to get a plan with SMS, so they might as well charge premium for the people who want it.

Is any of what we do on these devices "THAT" urgent? When was the last time you actually wrote a real letter, licked an envelope, and stuck a stamp on it to mail? By the way, a US postage stamp costs forty-two cents ($0.42 US) and is generally delivered within three business days -- unless you want it delivered overnight which costs a minimum of $16.50. However, if your friend MUST get the latest piece of dribble from you immediately then stop complaining about the cost of these instant gratification devices and their service providers. Keep in mind, there is always a regular land-line and cell phone. It is ALL about the business of business and communication companies are in the business of making a profit. They could care less whether they make it from General Motors or you -- and really do NOT care if it is a text message or an image of what Sarah or Sam wore to the party last night or a change in plans for the Board of Directors meeting. Apple and AT&T are in the business of making a profit from the equipment and service they provide. Apple realized the original iPhone was too expensive so they lowered the price and their new iPhone is even less costly to encourage more customers; however, AT&T decided to increase their service contract price because they can -- so, if you like the new iPhone but NOT the new service contract -- tough -- that is business. Similarly, you like a certain car or SUV BUT hate the price of gasoline.

The price is supposed to be the same globally according to ol' Jobsy himself.

There's no way you have to pay for incoming texts. What if they're inter-carrier?
