cre.ations.net — Nate True came up with this (semi) sweet hack that lets you add phone numbers as speed dial icons on your 1.1.3 iPhone home screen. It's no jailbreak, but the hack is clever and pretty useful. It also supports adding custom pictures for each number.

How to do this on your own server: <a class="user" href="http://leefernandes.com/blog/Entries/2008/1/23_iPhone_SpeedDial_Icons.html">http://leefernandes.com/blog/Entries/2008/1/23_iPh ...</a>

Don't trust Nate True with your info, or anyone else. The script to run this from your own server is here: <a class="user" href="http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_1_1_3_Speed_Dial_PHP_Script">http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_1_1_3_Speed_Dial_PHP_ ...</a>

The question is: Why in hell are contacts buried under the "phone" feature at all? What if you're not even calling someone, but rather looking up an address and then pulling up a Google map? It would make a hell of a lot more sense to go into Contacts, find someone, and then tap his phone number to invoke the phone functionality. Not to wonder, hm, what's the location of that restaurant, and then inexplicably have to go into phone functions to find out.

Wouldn't it be easier to add the URL like this:tel://+12183398069or like thistel://+12183398069?picurl=<a class="user" href="http://path.to/photo">http://path.to/photo</a>

that's not true. Minimum requirement for phone call is GSM, or edge or gprs, for data, you need GPRS or EDGE.

For those with a jailbroken iPhone, check out my application that creates speed dials on the iPhone which does not have to launch Safari or confirm the call.SpringDial: Speed Dial for your SpringBoard<a class="user" href="http://springdial.mineshaftgap.net/">http://springdial.mineshaftgap.net/</a>

For those without a jail broken phone, there is a nice app up on the app store now for one-touch speed dialing, called (aptly named :P) Speed Dial <a class="user" href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284994083&mt=8">http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ ...</a>

Or if you'd like an app that supports dialing, SMS, and email, check out TapDial... <a class="user" href="http://tapdial.tapfactoryapps.com">http://tapdial.tapfactoryapps.com</a>

I made a web app that does something similar. It allows a speed dial icon on your homepage with a picture if you choose. Right now it require the picture to be hosted somewhere (I don't think it's possible to upload off the iphone with just html yet).
