defectivebydesign.org — The Defective by Design team ran a protest outside today's Apple event. Why? Because the iPad's unprecedented use of DRM to control all capabilities of a general purpose computer is a dangerous step backward for computing and media distribution. Sign the petition!

If the DRM doesnt get in the way, what's the problem. It's $500 too. This compares well with the Kindle and other devices. It will be a great eBook reader if nothing else.

I think you're not understanding me. Share-and-share-alike is a superior model for the creation and distribution of both art and science, and this includes software. Joe Public doesn't have to understand why, or even that this is true. The exponentially expanding feature set is what will win him over. A similarly sophisticated digital device running on Free Software would be superior in almost every imaginable way.My question is: Why hasn't anyone built such a thing?I have my theory, but what's yours?

The only difference between the iPad and the iPod Touch is that the iPad is bigger. I have an iPhone and an iPod Touch which i hardly use anymore. Im debating whether or not to get the iPad because everyone I know will have one probably the day they come out. Its just too expensive. It will probably have a few bugs in it anyway and I hate electronics that have bugs in them. It really affects how one enjoys the product anyway. However it will do many things I need it to do. Like I said, Im debating whether to get one or not.

"But is has many more possibilities and uses if it's open!"If it's open, people will install crappy build apps on it and ruin the user experience and thereby damaging Apple more than this whining that's seems to be the thing to do this year.Do you really think apps would respond as fast as they do now when flash filled safari pages are running in the background (Or whatever you want to do 'simultaneously' on such a small device)?

This is such a great device for the average consumer who can't be bothered to maintain their general purpose computers. Think of your grandmother or mother, think of anyone in your life who asks you for computer help.If they throw a print sub-system into this device I know half a dozen lawyers who will buy the thing.
