gametrailers.com — Its there for less than a second, but 2 minutes 30 seconds into the GDC montage video you can catch a glimpse of the PS3 Linux Desktop. Perhaps the best shot yet Linux has had at mainstream Desktop acceptance.. Appliance computing? better late than never...

I think some have realized that this isn't the PS3 Lunix desktop but others of you don't seem to get it yet. This is Otacon's made up desktop for MGS4 not the PS3's desktop and the reason it is subtitled with "Your looking at the key to winning the console war" is because Otacon was talking about the cell processor and the power it has at that part of the video.

Until someone actually creates applications that people want for PS3 linux, it just seems like a non-issue. Linux was on the PS2 also, but which system has more useful non-gaming applications that people want, the Xbox or the PS2?

YOU RETARD THATS FROM THE METAL GEAR SOLID 4 DEMO! :P IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LINUS DESKTOP ON THE PS3!

Er, couldn't that just be the computer that's playing the video, rather than a shot of the PS3? I see it all the time, someone's playing a video on their computer at a meeting or something, and they accidentally restore it to the desktop.

Hmm. Something about 5/6 of the way, the cars on Gran Turismo look a hell of a lot like PGR3, and in fact the track is the exact same, and for some reason the cars look a lot more PGR3ish. Just my 2¢. It just looks like PGR3.

Like I said, Sony isn't a PC manufacture. vaio is a laptop. Your not going to carry around your PS3 to use for computing.IBM patents more, but microsoft patents smarter. IBM patents anything it can think of. Microsoft patents directly for their technologies/products and other companies technologies/products that haven't been well patented, i.e ipod scrol wheel.Apple didn't start as a consumer electronic company, but they never really did that well as a computer company. They would have been bankrupt back in 97 if it wasn't for Microsoft saving them. Their current sucess is due to the Ipod. If you removed the Vaio from the market I doubt it would effect the sony bottom line that greatly. Remove the ipod, I doubt apple would survive 2 more years.Lastly, would people get over that afact that the current 360 games arern't next gen. They are ports, because of the lack of time devs had had with hardware. 1 or 2 years down the track you will see games on the 360 that you won't be able to get on a PC for at least another two years. The strength of the console is constant hardware. You don't have to account for varying architectures and different power, and you can draw amazing power. For example, splinter cell chaos theory. You could run that game on a processor on PC under 1 gighz, but the xbox 1 version looked as good as the PC version running 3.2 gighz on only 733 mghz.Expect the Playstation 3 games to be even worse that the 360s as developers will only have had the dev kit for 6 months where as with most consoles (360 included) they devs have it for at least a year.

heh people are gullible, its from MGS4, its not the linux desktop...whoever even said it was needs to question "why is this desktop set up like a pc when you know less tahn 25% of ps3 users will even conside plugging in a mouse

It isn't Linux. It IS from the MGS 4 trailer.Well... I shouldn't say it isn't linux, because I don't know what Otacon likes to run his PC on, but it's not the PS3's Linux interface. :P

That's the price in Australia - around $900 (I saw a pre-order ad in a catalog for $999 to be precise).

Well, the screen shot may not be real PS3 Linux but, Big Ken says it will be in there and I think it will be the master stroke for Sony if they do. Its like Rome finally beating Carthage, if you cant cut off his head standing toe to toe, go for his heart. Microsoft has too many resources for Sony to beat Microsoft, they just pull more money from somewhere else like Windows or Office. Putting Linux on the PS3 will help cut into that resource. Slow and steady, but sure. If your TV is high def (last year in the us high def outsold standard by 83%) instead of buying your kids a computer tell them to just use their stupid PlayStation! BOOM! That's one less copy of Windows and Works sold. And even if it isn't the fastest desktop computer, hey it's free. Don't forget, the same mentality helped MS kill off Netscape. Now you have an entire generation of kids growing up with Linux as the OS of choice. That's how many copies of windows and office lost in the future? "Why pay for software when you can get stuff just as good for free" they will say. They will not have the same prejudices as we have.Putting Linux on the PS3 also gives added value to an expensive console for very little price as IBM is developing Linux for the cell and giving it away for free. You just need to recompile things for the PS3. There will not be much in the way of support issues because every PS3 is the same. Go to one place to get all the drivers you need and don't worry about compatibility because its built into the model.Desktop Linux on the PS3 is also free advertising. The more time people spend on the PS3 the more familiar they become with the Sony brand weather they use it to play tux racer or MGS4. Even though you have a computer already, you may find yourself using the PlayStation instead. I have my 52" HD TV hooked up to my computer and have a wireless keyboard and mouse. I tell you its much more comfortable surfing the web from my lounger than sitting at the computer desk. The desktop computer is a big waste of space that I think a lot of people would be glad to reclaim if they could. I'm not sure that Sony is going to put Linux on the PS3 as full fledged OS but they should. And, if they are not thinking about it, they should read this post.Joel Schlecht
