glossynews.com— "Todd Farmer of West Chester, PA, sold his mint-condition AOL 1.0 startup disc for over $9,000 in an online auction." I'll credit Kris919 for the story/link.

Correction, after reading a different glossynews article, I believe this story to be fake. I also looked for any aol 1.0 disks on eBay with none available being sold at that price.
Just a FYI - they are worth tens of dollars for the rare ones. Also, AOL just announced that they have stopped making the CDs. So the only way is up!Kidding aside, it's not hard to see why people collect them. AOL did everything in their power design-wise to stop people from chucking them. Many of them are quite pretty and unique. There's even a wikipeda entry;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_disk_collecting
Don't let AOL read about this, with their current financial status they will dig up all the unused 1.0 disks (ya know the ones buried beside all the Atari 2600 ET's) and flood the EBay market causing a cascading decline in the lucrative AOL s**t disk, coaster market.
I kept one one of those old GeoWorks monstrousities around just for the heck of it. I wonder how much I can get for mine, what with it being all sticky with ages-old cherry brandy.

I doubt the price was set arbitrarily.

'Why is the pic of a 3.5 disk and not a 5.25 floppy?
