online.wsj.com— AT&T's exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the U.S. expires next year, and AT&T CEO Stephenson is in talks with Apple for an extension until 2011.

Call AT&T. I know a few people that have gotten around that "requirement."You might have to have your call escalated a few times, but its possible.
"I expect this to be a successful deal - although at&t will cede even more to Apple in the process."I don't think AT&T has enough money to be able to buy an extension to the exclusivity. Apple knows their customers want the phone, and customer loyalty to AT&T is nil.Once the current contract runs out, I expect Apple to start selling the phones unlocked, and to rapidly drop the pricing as the scale increases. They could easily sell 50 million units or more in the USA in the first year after the AT&T deal expires.-jcr
Save money, yes, but get a MUCH smaller network. T-Mobile's phones and plans are great, but let's be honest, if you can't get signal where you live, what good is it? Everywhere I've ever lived, including Atlanta...if you're near a highway, you're good. If you're not, 2G it is for you.I despise AT&T, but I'm not crazy enough to think that anyone else has a broader network. Heck, even the backwoods city I moved from has 3G now.
I am eyeing the G1 as well. Superb phone and it's only the first try. Android will explode soon. Firefox will be coming to it as well. Only thing I don't like about the G1 is it doesn't sync with my iTunes, iCal and Address book. Gmail's calendar still doesn't sync well with iCal.
I won't get an iPhone until it's available on T-Mobile. I can't afford AT&T's expensive voice and data plans. I've been so much happier on T-Moible since I switched... and I get tons more minutes for less than I ever paid on Cingular/AT&T.
