imakeprojects.com — This is a homemade LED flashlight with a PVC body that is easily bright enough to blind you, and uses only one special LED (a Luxeon III). The light projected is a smooth, clear white illumination with no "rings" in the projected light like those cast by normal flashlights.

Er . . . Luxeon IV + 3 Cell Maglite . . . simple and easy. Of course this is a cool walkthrough to help understand things a little better (and it kills time for the bored amongst us with too many parts at hand)

know of any prebuilt conversion kits for this? I'm all for DIY but I wouldn't mind a more professional solution to replace the bulb in my maglite...

A few different companies make drop-in LED replacement "bulbs"; EverLED is good since it will work with multiple voltages (2-6 batteries), though they're about 40 bucks -- http://www.leddynamics.com/EverLED/Lots of people who do their own LED conversions buy Maglites for the bodies and ditch the insides.

LED are suppose to replace hooligan lights. They are bright, use less power and give off a cooler color

I created something similar by just replacing an MR-16 halogen bulb with an LED version I found at http://www.saviolighting.com/MR16-LED-20-Degree-p/ ...Obviously no where near as bright, but its getting there.
