cnn.com — What do Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and entertainment mogul David Geffen have in common? Besides being exceedingly rich, none of them has a college degree. Four-year college not only path to well-paid work.

I have a college degree but most of the useful information I have learned has been on my own. In fact my two most valuable programmers do not have college degrees. These two guys have taught me a few things and they work circles around most of the college grads I've been through. Information is far more accessible these days and if you have the passion and drive you can be a valuable asset.

@ jasqwerty I've never commented before, but if you're going to attack someone you should really make sure you're not making the same mistake. Check your spelling, jasqwerty, and it wouldn't hurt to check the punctuation either. As to the topic, I dropped out of high school and attempted college twice. Like some of the other posters here, it just was not for me; I do much better in an independent learning environment. I don't discount the benefits of higher education for most or that it may increase your chances for a greater income. On the the other hand, as has also been mentioned, you can make a "good" or "reasonable" living in any number of fields without a degree. . . Sales being foremost amongst them. It never hurts to hedge your bets, though, so if someone has the economic means, time and desire to go to college - Congrats and more power to them!

The syntax of this phrase that you erroneously dubbed grammatically incorrect is, in fact, correct, but it is written in journalistic style as a headline. No, I didn't go to college, but I am a journalist in the military, and that has helped me get two different jobs that required a Bachelors degree each. It is all about ingenuity, creativity and being self-taught.

i went to a 4 year college and decided that it was just a waste of time- not that education is a waste- simply that i would get a bachelors degree and graduate with ten thousand other kids who are vying for the same entry level 30K a year jobs as i am. i partied my share- drank more than enough to hold me over for years to come and then i figured- hey why not do something useful. i left my 4 year university and went to a 2 year college got my associates' degree, and became an air traffic controller. I'm making about 120K a year and I've only been doing this for about 5 years. its a hard job, its challenging, i have a heart attack nearly every 5 minutes and premature grey hairs- but at the end of the day it is the most rewarding experience ever. yea we got the highest suicide rates out of any profession- but hey, we're right up there with police officers and dentists.

I got my masters and now I am broke, in debt and cant get a decent job. I have bad credit and nightmares about not getting a job. Also because most companies check your credit history before hiring. I used to believe that knowledge is power when I was in school, but in reality ,money is power. Most of the job listing ask for 5 plus years experience, like I was born with experience. If I had spent time working rather than just going to school and dreaming about the perfect job, I would have been better off. Even after school, you end up as a slave to the corporation, that can fire you at will or f**king outsource the jobs to other foreign contracters. Dont think you are doing a favor to the people in India or China by outsourcing your problems, as the people in these countries are suffering work related stress and health problems because of you. Its driving prices higher in these countries too and creating a cultural degradation. To the big corporations, do what is good for your employees and your country or these actions will come back to haunt you. What goes around, comes around. Colleges dont teach you s**t about the real world. Companies should just hire people out of high school and train them for what they need. Most of the time in college is spent on sucking upto professors, for which you have to pay. Isnt that the worst deal you've ever heard of. Still people like me, dont learn. College was the best time of my life, but it didnt prepare for the real life ahead. If I had started working early, I would have been debt free today. Also my network of people in my field of interest would have been greater. In the end, go to school if you want to get away from the reality of life, but start working early if you want to be on top of things. For most companies asking 5 years of experience after school, you are retarded.
