engadget.com — So throughout this whole Zune launch thing the whole lot of us have been playing cat and mouse with Microsoft on the finer points. Will it or won't it be built on PlaysForSure or some variant? How will it recognize copyrighted vs. creative commons content without opening up piracy loopholes?

And yet another Attack the Zune effort. Now, because the wireless feature on Zune *GASP* does exactly what Microsoft said it was going to do. Of course the "inside info" comes from "Zune employee by the name of David Caulton". (You have to excuse me but these sources found by these blogs seem never to pan out too well. Remember the Zune wont have video story?)And of course Engadet does a CYA by stating: "(and Microsoft doesn't claim the Zune is feature-complete), so we can probably assume that we'll be expected to hold out for later Zune firmware releases where actually useful wireless capabilities will be added."Do tell? From the tone of your title, It just seemed like another pathetic, bizarre attack. Judging from the usual clown car of fanboys that commented on the story, with all the usual FUD BS about how the Zune is a total flop that they are famous for, it looks like it's mission accomplished!Stay tuned tomorrow when we hear that the Zune cannot be used as a can opener! We now return to regularly scheduled fanboy trolling...

"how is windows wireless networking a cluster f**k? you plug your wifi card, usb adapter, bridge in and its ready to go without you touching a thing. A complete moron could set it up...oh wait."Ummmm - I don't want to get into the PC Fanboy vs Mac Fanboy thing because I think it is all getting a little tired. But the Mac wireless networking is not that tough either - you turn on your machine - thats it !!!I reckon the Zune will be great. Competition will only make the Ipod even better - then the Zune will make a great leap - then the Ipod - then the Zune as so on, and so forth. We my friends - will be the winners. Better gadgets for all :)

If the Zune wraps DRM around my Creative Commons file can I sue MS for breach of contract?
mykelOct 3, 2006
@geoken... whatever man... if you like it then buy it... I'm not saying it won't work for you... I'm saying nothing about it screams change. I just looked at all your digg comments... the common theme is "Apple bad Microsoft Good."

teamparadox - You can NOT, let me repeat that, NOT share files with the Zune "free and clear." It doesn't matter if your file was ripped from a disc, purchased through Microsoft, or if you made it yourself. When you share an audio file Zune-to-Zune, it gets the 3/3 restriction no matter what. This has been stated as clearly as possible by Cesar (ZuneInsider) himself:http://www.medialoper.com/hot-topics/microsoft/microsoft-insider-clarifies-zunes-sharing-limitations/The confusion is in where the DRM ends up.No, the un-DRM'd file you shared isn't altered in any way. That doesn't mean the new Zune gets a fully playable version. The restrictions are built into the Zune.Any file recieved by a Zune from another Zune is playable 3 times only. You cannot take these files off your Zune and put them anywhere else. This doesn't affect the file itself, it's a restriction built into the player.

""Fanboy" eh? Wow flag564, take a look in the mirror sometime and say hello to one of the biggest fanboys on Digg.Say something negative about Zune and watch flag564's spittle fly!Your anti-Engadget paranoia has become obsessive."Because you dim bulbs have done nothing but attack every mp3 player from the Zen to Zune. I dont care what you use, but if your deal is to try to spread FUD on non Apple products in a n effort to damage them in the market, then you should expect people to tell you to shove it.

It's uglier and it's bigger than iPod and the name sucks. I think it's 30 bucks worth to buy me an iPod instead of a zune. Does the same thing with a lot more style.
felchdonkeyOct 3, 2006
What are you spending the extra 30 bucks on? The iPod is a dollar cheaper than the Zune.

Where are you hearing this "buzz?"I don't know anyone outside of Diggistanis and gadget geeks who have even heard of the Zune. The Zune buzz is pretty big on all the Zune blogs, but those are basically MS shills who are being stroked by the PR folks. Try heading out to a bar tonight, and ask the first five people you meet if they're excited about Zune. You'll get some puzzled looks, that's about it.
