gamasutra.com — Ziff Davis has sold its 1UP division to Hearst's UGO Entertainment, and is shutting long-running print magazine EGM in the process. Ziff Davis Media's EGM Magazine, a consumer game print mainstay since 1989, will be discontinued. The January 2009 issue will be the final printed issue.

Hearst? As in Randolph "Citizen Kane" Hearst? I had no idea his corporation still existed.

Instead of trying to be a source of news, print magazines should shift towards in depth stories and reviews. Newsweek and Time are still thriving (right?) even though they only come out once a week because they don't try to be the place to hear things first.

I grew up with EGM. And the personalities of 1up always got me laughing. Can't believe 1up is a husk of its former self now.
