When Farhad Manjoo's Brother printer abruptly stopped zipping out prints, he began to wonder if the printer wasn't simply lying that it was out of toner in order to trick him into buying more before he needed it. The prints hadn't been fading at all, but the printer simply refused to go on without a new cartridge.

My printer actually eats though %5 of all ink cartridges when you insert new ink. Even if your just replacing the 1. I'm sure its in the name of 'cleaning' or some s**t. Even if it was when you did all of them, there are 7 or so separate cartridges for b&w/colour/photo so that %35 of one 1 cartridge worth of ink right there.We need an OpenSource printer design, something like a RepRap except a normal printer rather than a 3D one. Something someone can just take to a fabrication facility for the main parts and buy/machine the rest.You could probably even make one where you can make the ink your self (the RepRap can be made from corn). Or just buy really cheap art supply ink. Or just make it rugged enough that it wont die when you try 3rd party ink.Or better yet a cheap laser printer.☢
