Because the Darfur region is far from the gov, it's easier to just protect Darfur from the gov than what we have now in Baghdad. Plus we can respond to any janjaweed attacks since the Sudanese gov do not officially support them and most importantly not part of the Sudanese gov.
Um, no one disputes that. Sudan has been in a brutal Civil War for quite awhile between the North and South. Recently, it's been rather peaceful, for them anyway. And, as you say, the Khartoum gov't has moved its attention westward, where, likely because they aren't Christian, the world isn't going to intervene fast enough. With the civil war in the south, it was one of the few times you would see what people call "right-wing" republicans and "left-wing" democrats join forces on a human rights issue. One reason why the US actually exerted pretty constant pressure, though it took a long time coming to do so.
I will admit I know little about Darfur or the situation their. Nonetheless, this article seems completely biased towards the African population; Every story has two sides.
