The key to a good guild is to grow slowly. Many of the large guilds on my servers have broken up cause they were zerged when they were initially formed. There were no real requirements to get into those guilds and they ended up failing and breaking up forming other guilds.
Browncoat, I have to disagree. Video games are fantasy; especially ones that are of fantasy genre. Being a gamer myself, I know that I do things in games that I would never try in real life. For someone to say that they are gaining real-life experience from a game, is delusional. People are not reacting the same way in a game as in real-life because there is no risk to well-being.
your problem is that you're too old fashioned. Whether it's online or offline, a good leader still needs certain skills. And if a guild leader manages to keep a guild of 30 to 60 people in check, settles disputes between members, build alliances, and organizes hunts, then it's a good chance he's a good leader in real life situations as well.
"Except, imagine doing all those things with a bunch of people who have an average maturity level of a 12 year old and you get a better idea what its like."To be fair, the average WoW player doesn't have a much higher maturity level either...
This article is exactly right. You learn so much about dealing with people through the Internet and online video gaming, it's not even funny.Look at the crap moderators have to deal with on political blogs - just amazing how low people will go, and how even reasonable people can lose it.You can develop a really thick skin and open mind online, if you try.
