news.zdnet.com — YouTube is not only rapidly gaining users, but media executives are now beginning to take notice. Hopefully Hollywood has noticed the train that hit their friends in the music business, and will be able to see this one coming.

"Hopefully Hollywood has noticed the train that hit their friends in the music business, and will be able to see this one coming."We're talking about the same Hollywood that can't figure out that the reason profits are down is because they keep turning out lousy movies (that are mostly remakes of lousy old TV shows)? Not likely.

Yet another example of companies building their userbase and fame and notariety by questional or sometimes illegal means and then flipping over and exhanging all of that for a huge wad of cash by going legitimate. It's almost like extortion and it's unfair to companies who are legitimate from the start.I mention this almost daily on here, thanks to similar stories. Kazaa, Skype, Napster and so on. Like I've said before - it's like stealing cars and selling them until you make enough money to buy a legitimate dealership.

You have a good point about full length works, but I think the case of YouTube is different. I would argue that YouTube has done more to help the popularity of Saturday Night Live than anything the show has done themselves in years. Allowing fans to share something that is great about your show sounds like a great way to get more people to tune in again. Television makes it's money by generating audiences for their advertisers, not by hammering the viewer who wants to tell everyone how great your show is by sharing a clip. That's not a revenue loser, that's an incredible market research opportunity.
