latimesblogs.latimes.com — In the latest in a series of moves away from its early, free-wheeling roots, YouTube has quietly changed the default filter on its highly trafficked main video page from "Most Viewed" to something called "Popular." Youtube's intention for the change to their main page is ambiguous and what it really means, we'll never know.

Seems like a good ideal . . . I'd rather know what people are watching now/what's current than see the Evolution of Dance video continually at the top of the rankings.

It is more sinister than that. Most Watched is a very straightforward metric. Rank videos by how many times watched. "Popular" they can say, any video that has 100 views is popular and choose to put paid placement videos at the top. It is an ambiguous, subjective term.

There are lots of re-views too. If you have a video you can see the difference.
